Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort

About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Paiute is the gem of Las Vegas
After attending the PGA event this weekend at TPC Summerlin and seeing the course quality there we went out for a round at Paiute Sun today. The wind was forecast down today so seemed like a perfect day as it can get quite windy out there. After an easy 20 minute drive we were greated by the very friendly bag staff and pro shop. The course conditions as usual are immaculate and every bit as fine as what the pros were getting at TPC. The course was full but pace of play moveed right along. Fairways were pristine, Greens were a bit slow, sand immaculate, range conditions hitting off grass were perfect. Concession staff very nice and lunch afterwards was great. We played Sun Mountain which was a perfect test presenting lots of risk/reward for we mid handicappers so was a really fun day. Thanks Paiute!
$$$$
Loved everything about this course. Glad I'm not tempted to play it more often.
Beautiful desert setting
Beautifully kept course with interesting features, A lot of fun to play.
It’s worth the drive.
I played the wolf course and it was a really neat layout. Two local guys that help me manage the course being my first time playing there. I will definitely go back and hope to play the other two courses. Staff was amazing. The only negative thing I have to say is I got to play it with a 30 mph wind which was challenging.
Wow Factor
All around wow factor. The course is a true golfer course. Lots of locals said they prefer the sun course and I could see why. Pete dye, fun layout. Some of the holes look pretty similar. Every hole is a masterpiece. Friendly staff. Played on a Thursday so wasn’t over booked or busy. Played fast! Rangers must do a good job. Must stop for a Vegas golf trip.
Great golf / poor hospitality
After finishing our round of golf, employee criticized and scolded our group for using the wrong ramp to leave. There were no signs posted. No friendly customer service. Very uncalled for.
Nothing in Vegas comes close to Paiute
The mountain and desert views are beautiful. The fairways are perfect. The greens are fast and smooth. The rough is lush green grass, even in December. The tee boxes are cut short. The bunkers have good sand. The cart paths are edged. Outstanding grass range prior to the round. Beautiful views from the clubhouse restaurant.
Prefer the other courses at Paiute to this one. Outside of some difficult pin positions, there wasn't a lot of challenge or interesting holes. You will need to be able to shot shape with your driver on some small doglegs, but none of the holes are target practice. Greens were firm in the winter so balls wouldn't stay. There's a few fairway bunkers, and some greenside drop offs, but that's about it. Hole 18 was the only hole with a water hazard - similar to 18 at Snow Mountain, except you're not playing into the Clubhouse.
GPS is on carts but it the screens could be bigger, and could include distance from tee. (2) water bottles are included, but there's no water on the course. Drink cart came around 2x. There's a snack shop separate from the clubhouse at the turn.
Tee times are spaced 10 minutes apart, and even with a full tee sheet we were done in under 4 hours.
Vacation golf
The course is beautiful but can be difficult. You need to pay attention to the flow to the next hole for a couple of the holes. The staff was very friendly. The club house was really nice. We were disappointed that the kitchen closed at 4. We were hoping to eat there to enjoy the beautiful views from the clubhouse.
Tough conditions
Amazing course, just wish the weathermen would have been right, supposed to be 59-62° with 5mph winds. It was low 40's with 20+ mph winds, we weren't dressed for those conditions so it made for a challenging round. But the Hot Chocolate with Baileys helped from the quick shack!
