Rating 74.7

Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.

The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,

The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Great course but need to improve fairways

Have always enjoyed the Heritage Group courses. Was disappointed with the lack of grass on the fairways. You might want to give it a month to grow in.

Two Thumbs Down

Price and quality/condition did not match. Bare lies tee to green. Greens were in decent shape, nothing else. Maybe weather was dry but then adjust the price point. Vacationers with advance tee times do not have options. Will not return in the future. Very disappointed.

Poor course condition

There was hardly any fairway grass. When hitting on the fairways it felt like you were hitting off of asphalt.

I think the tall pines that line the fairways must keep their grass from growing.

There are other courses at HH island with grass fairways that are easier to play.

Unfortunately, will not return

Both Rangers were unnecessarily aggressive; telling us to play fast at the start without being welcoming and later rushing us on the tee box without realizing that the group ahead was still on the ladies' tee. The fairways and rough are in very poor condition. From tee box to green feels like a hard, sandy cart path. That said, the greens are in beautiful condition. The wait staff in the restaurant (Val) was wonderful - the nicest person I met on the staff.

Won't go back!

The security guard at the entrance to the Oyster Reef community was rude and very unpleasant. Not a very good start to the our visit. Course play was very slow and there was no ranger on the course. Never saw the cart girl after the first hole. When we finished our round we tried to get a drink at the outside patio and was told that we couldn't sit outside unless we were ordering food. Mind you there were many open tables and it was 4:00pm. We had dinner reservations at restaurant in Hilton Head at 6;00pm!

Ranger

We had an unfortunate experience at this course due to an overzealous ranger. We were first out in the AM and were playing at a respectable pace of about 2:10-2:20 for 9 holes. The ranger passed us multiple times on the front and never interacted in any way.

When we came to 10 he told us due to our slow play we had to skip 10 and go to 11. Mind you the group behind us was nowhere to be seen. He was rude and had no valid reason for this decision.

We had to at finish 10 at the end of the round which required us to wedge in between other foursomes which slowed pace of play and annoyed the other golfers.

Just a bad experience which was totally unnecessary and didnt accomplish anything but to annoy everyone and further slow pace of play.

Avoid this place at all costs

Fun Day

Staff was great. Pace of play about 4:15. Greens are excellent...rest of course is as you would expect this time of year. Layout is nice...first time a little difficult due to doglegs you aren't familiar with in terms of where to aim for.

All in all, I'd play again, but probably in the early fall!!!

Fairways were in rough shape

I understand that golf courses require maintenance, but was disappointed and surprised by the amount of sand on the fairways. Compared to the other courses within their network, this course was is in the roughest shape.

Needs overseeding

Really enjoyed the course. Greens were true and receptive. Sand traps smoothly raked. Fairways were not overseeded. Consequently, fairway shots were far more challenging than necessary.

Just ok

The course was definitely showing a winter struggle. Pace of play was fine but it was not mentioned before we headed out that they were painting the fairways. That led to a slightly less enjoyable day and messy. For the cost of play - you should be informed of this or at least play at a discounted rate.
