Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Illinois (2015 #22)
Reviews
Perfect Accessible Public Track
Challenging layout, great conditions, smooth greens, and fair pricing. Literally 0 complaints about this place.
4 Stars New Carts with GPS (3pct Credit Card Surcharge)
Appears Whitetail hasn't been reviewed much and not at all in 2023. The course is in awesome shape - tees, fairways, rough, greens, traps.....it was difficult to find anything wrong with course conditioning. Brand new carts with GPS and the yardages are dead on. I was amazed that we had a perfect afternoon for golf and an almost empty golf course. We played in well under 4 hours....probably 330. Whitetail is a bit pricey.....and that may be a reason why it wasn't that crowded. It's a bit out of the way - a $55 CASH senior rate during the week is a good value,....any more than than they'd likely get even less weekday play. Great patio and bar post round. Range was still off mats. Friendly course nurse service and all of the staff want you to have a great experience. A couple of showers off the men's room - the two restrooms at the turn and the mens/locker room are smelly/messy and probably need an update.
Downgrading almost full star - I might have honored Whitetail with a very high 4.75 stars but then they charge 3pct more if you use a credit card. This up charge is absolutely ridiculous (first golf venue I've ever seen do this with on site greens fee) and quite frankly this extra credit card fee should be posted very prominently on their website. Bring cash if you want to pay the actual rate. Highly recommend the course and our group will return at least once or twice more this season. It's that well conditioned.
Just a beautiful course
I had not play Whitetail Ridge in about ten years or so. I played on June 17 and the course is just in fantastic shape .The greens were rolling perfect no hops to the ball fairways also in great shape. Forgot about the elevation changes on the back nine which were rather fun for the eye. I WILL play this course a couple more times this year. $55.00 on a Friday with a cart and range balls. Only negative weekend price is I believe $95
Early morning round at Whitetail
Played in May (review below). All the same except they had rakes out for the sand traps. A very good interesting track which is a tad pricey even for seniors at $49 during the week. That's the very most I'd ever pay to play Whitetail... it's really a $40 course with nice facilities and driving range. Their "dynamic" pricing for non seniors rates are over $60 most of the time and even get close to $100 on weekends. For a really decent course way out in Yorkville those admission charges are quite a bit overboard. First thing in the morning we got around in a little over 3 hours. Recommend for play.
Most of my 5/12/21 review below still applies.
Sand traps are now fairly maintained and have rakes - but are in need sand replenishment . Water jugs with cold water are also out. Whitetail is a solid 4.2 star plus operation per the review average. $49 weekdays for seniors is an okay price point but not great - should be around $40. And the rack rates are pretty pricey given the location of the course. We were first off on a weekday and finished in less than 3 hours. If you haven't played Whitetail it's worth the extra drive and you are missing out - it's definitely worth a play or two each season.
Wonderful - Covid doesn't exist.....
Excellent conditions except for the sand traps which are not maintained - no rakes are provided. Fast smooth greens good tee boxes and nice fairways. Saw my first ball washer in a while....first water jug and no pool noodles in the cups! Face masks are purely optional in the clubhouse and none of the employees were wearing one which was a nice sight especially if you fully vaccinated. Friendly on course nurse. Whitetail Ridge is a very good value at $49 during the week for a senior. It's worth the drive and the extra ten bucks. Love the back nine of this place....it's really solid. The downgrades are the sand traps (no attempt by the grounds crew at start of the season to even rake them out...they are pretty much flat pan)....another 1/2 star downgrade for the bathroom urinals mens room inside where the showers are....really smelly. Yep a full 1/2 star downgrade on that one. The renovated new pro shop/downstairs/patio area and upstairs deck are awesome. Good food in the restaurant so I hear. Nice selection of orange whips on tap. Highly recommended.
Unfortunate
I’ve played here several times. The layout is very good. Conditions are good. Views are great (for Illinois). BUT, it took over 25 minutes to checkin, no starter, no rangers and 5.5 hours to play. I told the guys are the pro shop at the turn and they responded “it always slow on Saturday”......unacceptable especially for the price they charge. I’ve had the same experience here several times but I keep coming back because of the layout, no more. There are plenty of higher end courses where you get good service and can play in less than 5 hours.
Very disappointed
This was my first time playing, what I have been told is one of the premier courses in the area. It is in fact just that, great layout, challenging but fair. My problem is this. I made the turn and all the greens on what is the front 9, (I teed off the back) had been heavily sanded!!! So much so that they were not even playable!!! Now really, I understand that courses need maintenance, however YOU HAVE TO TELL THE PLAYERS!!!! I certainly did not drive 30 plus miles to play half the course!! When my round was finished I went inside to politely say that I thought it was unfair to not inform the players. A very polite women took my information and assured me that I would be contacted. To this point that has not happened.
My conclusion is this, I will certainly not make that drive again to play a course that clearly does not care enough to let a player know when a significant event is happening to the course affecting its play!!!
What I shame as I was very excited to finally see this course, and for 9 holes was thrilled with it, only to leave wishing I had paid my good money to play elsewhere.
Worth the Drive from Chicago Suburbs
Enjoyed 18 holes with a group of friends and overall, thought the course was great. It is a bit of a drive from Chicago and/or the Western Suburbs, but worth the drive. At times, you can even get a tee time for $75 versus $100+ on weekends. Would definitely recommend playing at Whitetail Ridge!
Great course
Course was in great shape. Best shape I've seen this year. Pace of play was really good. Only negative was that we never saw the beverage/food cart once. Definitely would play again even though the fee was a little high.
Highly Recommend 4.5 stars
With the very dry summer Whitetail is the best shape of any course I've played this flogging season in and around Chicagoland. Usually the lower lying front nine is really swampy. All areas of the course well maintained even the sand traps. Divot mix on the carts...which are electric and clean as a whistle. Now a precocious teenager at 13....Whitetail is maturing into a wonderful course. Greens are huge with good speed - large enough for each of them to have 6 different pin positions areas noted on the scorecard...so when they change the pins you really do get a new adventure. 4 Strong Par 5's. Clubhouse/proshop currently closed - you check in at the snack shop window. Warm up range usually off mats. Nice patio area for food/beverages post round. 4.5 stars. My 1/2 star downgrade - weekday afternoon green fee at $69 is very overpriced.....thus in the afternoons the course is pretty empty. Even their Friday and Weekend rates where they include food/soda and range balls for $79 & $103 prime time weekends is really pricey. A C note to play on weekend morning? Please. All I saw on a Thursday mid-afternoon golfing were senior couples and a few superseniors paying $45. A good price point and one they should just change everyone weekday afternoons.....and then they'd fill up their tee sheet. Pre round it was also weird I saw very few people smiling or seeming to have a good time - rather snooty...when did Yorkville become the North Shore?
Good Course
This course grew on me. Didn't appreciate much until I played it more and the course matured.
Because this course is away from a lot of the population, it tends to be less crowded more often.
These days that is hard to find.
Front 9 is low lying and wet, meaning there is more water and you can buy adult beverages. The back nine is more undulating with some nice views around 15-17.
Don't forget to stop by Superman's boyhood homestead nearby. Watch the Man of Steel
Customer Should be Right
Good layout but much better values available at current rates. The owner is a very pleasant and engaging individual however Everyone does not qualify for a point of contact person. The young man working the check in that morning was snide in his remarks to me. This isn’t the first time I’ve dealt with him; he does not appear happy in his position Please assign him to cleaning carts and not waiting customers.
No Ranger pace of play
I really like this golf course and the physical plant however the pace of play was not monitored today and it caused serious issues.
Fun Layout
Unique front and back 9 challenges. Thoroughly enjoy making the round. One nice fix would be replacing the worn out spike brushes on the course, and had a few more on both 9's. Other than that a gun track through the local countryside.
Always a Great Experience
Played this past Sunday, 5th round at WtR this year. Cannot say enough good things about this facility. Great clubhouse, pristine practice facility (could use a bunker at the putting green, but it's not a deal breaker) and the course layout is spectacular.
Front 9 is relatively flat with water every hole but #1, enough to challenge your shot making abilities.
The back 9 is rolling and features as good a 4 hole stretch (from #10 to #14) as you'll find in the area. #17 is a great Par 3 from an elevated Tee box down to a green surrounded on 2 sides by water.
Cannot say enough good things about Whitetail Ridge.
Solid layout
Even though it rained quite hard the day prior, the course drained well. There were a few wet spots but nothing bad. I think they could have ran the rakes through the sand bunkers but they may have been a logical reason they were unable to
A little pricey for Father’s Day but it was quite enjoyable
I’ll be back
One of the best well-kept courses in Western suburbs
Well maintained course. Exceptional value for the money
Good Course But...
Greens were in excellent shape like the entire course
Except they were slow !!!
Sand traps need some work
