Blue Heron Golf Course

About
Blue Heron Golf Course, formerly known as Carnation Golf Course, first opened in 1967 but underwent a major renovation, in addition to the name change, after it was bought in 2011. Located in the Snoqualmie Valley, the course would occasionally be overrun by the Snoqualmie River but thanks to improved drainage and irrigation features added in the renovation, the course is able to drain remarkably fast. At just a few yards shy of 6,000 yards, Blue Heron G.C. is on the shorter side but that is no indication of its level of difficulty. Golfers will face a variety of challenges including an abundance of bunkers strategically placed throughout. One of the toughest holes is the par-5 17th, which is a blind tee shot where a long iron might come in more handy than a driver.

Backyard has better greens
All the greens were dried up so you were basically putting on dirt. One of the holes was so bad they just put the play in the middle of the fairway. Fairways also in horrible condition. Location is nice but the way they course is right now it’s horrible
Needs work. Was ok most the day, but when a blue flag was placed up front on 13, that annoyed me. Need a red flag there.
Calling This A Goat Track Would Be An Insult To Goats
Calling this a goat track would be an insult to goats. I get this is a rural course, but it has really gone down hill in the last 4 years I’ve been frequenting this track. When I’ve golfed at BH in the past, I knew what I was getting into: fairway grass a little longer, uneven and destroyed tee boxes, and a few brown patches on the greens. I was okay with this for under $40/round with a cart. However, the this last time that I played here it was atrocious.
Fairway grass was as long as the rough, and we spent more time looking for our golf balls (and losing a few) that were hit in the fairway than any other place I’ve played. The greens were nonexistent, a better name would have been the dirt because that’s all it was, no grass in sight. They were so bad that the dirt where the greens were supposed to be were so dry they cracked, like you would see in the desert during a record breaking drought. I’m sad this course has gone so far downhill, it really seemed like last year they started to put in more effort to make it a better course by mowing more often and cutting back blackberry bushes. Unfortunately, they didn’t continue with upkeep and I feel robbed for only paying $25 for the round I just played.
On a positive note, the young guy at the front desk was really nice and the restaurant staff were really helpful. They’ve made slight improvements to the driving range by cutting a strip of grass down so you don’t have to practice hitting in 4inch grass like before. Pace of play was pretty quick because no one was putting, they were just picking up their ball and adding 2 strokes when they hit it on what should have been the green. Finally, the gas carts are newer so they won’t have the debacle they’ve had the last few years of carts dying on the course and them leaving them in the fairways for a few weeks before they figure out how to get them back to the barn.
Greens in Rough Shape
Has been a fun and relatively inexpensive place to play with a handful of interesting holes, but the greens have really gone downhill. More than half the greens are more dirt than grass. When I played there last year there were a few rough patches on some greens but this is the worst I've ever seen greens on a course.
So sad to see this course deteriorate
I last played here maybe 2 years ago - it was a bit rough, but now it is unplayable. The greens had very little, patchy grass. They were mostly dirt with weather cracks (not just some, all of them!). The fairways were not mown and full of weeds. Tee boxes were heavily used, divoted and again, very little grass. So very disappointing. I said the course was moderate for difficulty - due to poor conditions one couldn't hold a green with a great wedge shot, so add 2 or 3 strokes for this plus deplorable putting.
Terrible greens
Many greens were simply dirt! One or 2 holes had no green at all. The fairways were okay. If you want to practice your irons and driver then it's a decent price. Forget about the greens....rediculous!
What has happend this year
I played on Saturday the 25th of August, 2024 and unfortunately, the experience was far from what I had hoped for. While the golf carts were top-notch—comfortable, well-maintained, and equipped with all the latest features—the rest of the course left much to be desired.
The pace of play was painfully slow, making it hard to get into a rhythm. But the biggest disappointment was the condition of the greens. They were in terrible shape—scalped in many areas, almost no grass coverage, and cracked from what seemed like a severe lack of watering. It was like putting on a dried-out dirt lot rather than a proper green.
With such great carts, it's clear that the course has potential, but they need to seriously invest in the upkeep of the greens and improve pace-of-play management if they want to attract serious golfers. I hope they can turn things around because, in its current state, I can't recommend playing here.
Course was very poorly maintained. There was a note about a few holes being under maintenance however the entire course was a mess. So many leaves and grass clippings on the fairways ball were lost in plane sight. The greens looked like a topographic map they were half dead and bare with potholes and clumps making putting a joke. Flags were placed in odd locations - not in greens on several holes.
Course needs new Greens keeper
I've played here all my life and haven't played in the past couple of years. WOOF.. The course has gone scorched earth. 7 holes where on the fairway.. meaning the flags were in rough... so you're putting literally on tall grass.
Really hope this course turns around. Missed opportunity to have a well established course. If not.. I am buying parts of this land since it will turn into housing development
Worst course I’ve ever played
The course was in the worst condition I’ve ever seen from any golf course. The greens were not even greens. I wouldn’t not recommend this course to anyone.
Needs work, has potential
I never got a straight answer as to why, but the greens were in pretty terrible shape and had a lot of areas of bare dirt. I assume they had issues with the grass dying off that may or may not have been their own fault. Really nice layout and you can tell the course has potential if they just put a little effort into it. I hope they get to come again and I will update this review because this would be a nice track.
Terrible Greens management
I've played here many times over the years and I've never seen the greens so bad.
I can't recommend the course in its current state
It's a beautiful spot but the course is in rough shape
It's a great place to learn how to golf or to walk around with your buddies and drink some beer. 5-6 holes had "temporary" greens and most of the grass was dead. It is what it is and I think knowing more details before I played would have been helpful. The rates should be much less for the amount of maintenance and amenities and the course should be more transparent about conditions on their website (the website says nothing about temporary greens or course condition).
Once upon a time this place was good.....that was a LONG time ago
Wow - been about 20 years since I played Carnation - and tough times, or tough greens, or SOMETHING is seriously Wrong. This was like going back to a place that you had fond memories off - post apocalypse. Easily the worst green conditions I have ever played that were over $20 - let alone $65 . The course appeared to not have a MOWER that worked. For anything. Shaggy everywhere - dead grass rolled up in rough making balls disappear. The river, which used to be a part of the charm, is totally hidden by massive overgrowth. Ponds, like hte feature for the 8th green and 9th back tee, are just scum and muck. The tee boxes were in terrible shape. The whole place seemed like it had been completely forgotten. And that is a shame - it used to be nice. The layout is still a good, one with the need to work the ball off the tee - but some of the set up was just comical -- kind of like a candid camera was going to pop out and go, Just kidding - heres your money back. You shouldnt have to pay for this. From the rock hard patches of almost concrete forgotten areas, the and traps were just rock quarries, tee boxes in places that were blocked by overgrown poplars (think a center closing out on a 3 point shooter) on numerous par fours. 4 temp greens - I get it, you have a green blight problem -- but the other 14 greens were not better better than the one I keep in my back yard (For Christs Sake) . ON 10 - which was completely dried out but at least the ball rolled, we had one fair shot at making something. We didnt get a putt to the whole all day. I have played fairways and MUNICIPAL courses faster than these. I won't return - I kind of wanted to ask for my money back but this place is obviously struggling if this is what they consider 'maintenance'. Absolute shame. At least we played fast. The beer after was cold.
Horrible
Unless you get the hot deal for $25 with a cart DO NOT play here. Tee boxes are hard as a rock, fairways are basically rough and the greens are completely dead with huge cracks on them.
