Golf Advisor: Top Courses in California (2014 #10)
Reviews
very nice place to play
nice fairway, nice green, nice staff
very nice place
Beautiful course
I had a 4:10 tee time on a Tuesday for $45 dollars. It's an incredible value given the quality of the course. I will definitely play there again as there are very few people at that time--I completed 18 holes in 2:55. It can be pricey if you go at peek times, but if you're willing to splurge, it's a great course to invite people.
Excellent course
The course is a little bit long, but makes players feel comfortable.
Fairway condition is very good and green condition is also great.
I want to play again in this course the earliest.
I enjoy playing at this course. the view is fantastic.the location is good too.
I would play more often,if the hot deal price can be more cheaper or offer more of the cheaper price at the later time.
Two Courses in one and challenging
There are two kinds of courses at Stonetree: The Flats and the Hills. The flats are far less challenging than the hill, where your drives need be be fairly precise as the tree lined fairways and elevation changes demand it.
The greens roll very nicely, thought they are not particularly fast. Though they do possess some challenging undulations and putting your ball on the right side of the hole will lead to a much better score here than on other course.
The $65 twilight rate was was quite fair but during peak hours the $100+ is not a value for this course.
Club house is really nice. The course it self was in great shape and the greens were in good shape also.
This is the first time I've played the course it was a lot of fun. 11 of the holes are on flat ground and the other seven are a real challenge being in the hills. A lot of steep grades going up and down the cart path in the hill area.
Nice course. Pricey but worth it for the above average golfer looking for a nice place to play
Course is in great shape and has some beautiful holes. Not easy (but fair) off the tee, large greens dictate accurate approach shots for a decent chance at birdie (or avoiding a 3 putt). Windy conditions made it much more difficult. No true driving range. Great course for the above average golfer looking to play a nicely maintained course and doesn't mind paying for it. Was slow for our round due to a large skins game in front of us. Probably wouldn't play it at the standard rates, but would definitely come back with a good golfnow deal.
It is a great shot makers course.
Great condition on a very fun and tough course. The pace of play was perfect with 10 minutes between tee times.
Good test of golf.
Need to be knowledgeable of distances. Some greens are three clubs deep. Best to have a course map and a range finder.
Most of the courses are hidden! Need very careful shot .
Most of the courses are hidden! Need very careful shot . I usually lost couple of balls each 18 play, this couse lost much more, Fareway are narrow and winding, at first player like me not easy to get right direction. Green condition was not bad but not so fast enough.
Clubhouse is impressive
This course is expensive to me. But is a great layout. Very pretty. Mountain and alot of water on this course. Sand very nice. Like a professional course.
Overall a really good experience
The course was in pretty good condition, the fairways had just been aerated, the bunkers were not overly hard or overly soft. The staff was great there, really friendly and out going. The rate of play was great, a group teed off in front of us by about 10 minutes and we never caught up to them and we never had the group behind us waiting either. Overall a really nice experience and I would go back any time.
Good course to test your skills.
My review is on the downside since half of the fairways had been aerated with the golf cart limited to the path on six of the holes. When I booked the teetime on GN, there was no indication of this maintenance occurring. Had I known prior to booking, I may have chosen a different course to play. Other than the disappointment of not playing the course as it was intended to be played, the golf course meanders through a valley and hilly areas. It presents various challenges of uphill and downhill lies, dogleg left and right off the tees and some water hazards and trees. You will need your "A" game to shoot below your handicap.
Excellent conditions, very challenging
The course was in great shape, the greens were perfect. The design has a lot of character too. The difficulty was a bit much at times though. Some fairways are PGA style narrow. You have to be extremely accurate off the tee.
Private feeling course open to public
Stonetree really feels more like a "members-only" course when you roll up. The course is very well maintained, staff is cordial, and it's a good challenging layout. Front 9 is flat while the back 9 plays very hilly. Course plays EXTREMELY quick -- my longest round here took 4 hours in a foursome. They spread out tee times by 15, 20 minutes so you don't logjam. Only downsides are lack of a driving range (you hit practice balls into a net for warm up) and it is a tad bit pricier. That's really the only thing holding it back from 5 stars.
Very challenging with fast greens
Very challenging with fast greens with fairways in good condition. Lots of elevation change to deal with.
very nice course remains a bit pricey
I love StoneTree but the rate continues to be a bit more than most people or myself wish to pay. When the premium rate is still $120 you can play 3 rounds on other decent courses for the $120. So for most of us it's a 2-3 a year treat and that's only if you get a bargain price on Golfnow.
Stone Tree Golf Course
Stone Tree is one of my favorite courses in the bay area. The course is interesting and always in great shape.
I fell in love with the place the fist time I played it. I enjoy how the course builds in interest throughout the round. Also, there are many tees to choose from that change the layout a bit.
It is hard to categorize the difficulty of this course. Some holes are very simple & some are difficult. In fact the first few holes are pretty easy. However more and more hazards creep up from holes 1 - 6. 7 takes you up into the hills and 9 brings you right back to the clubhouse. Hole 9 presents challenging options & can be quite long when the pin is in the back. 10 - 12 takes you through the flatlands again. You need to hone in your accuracy on these sleepy holes to prepare for 13 - 16. Anything off the fairway leaves you with no shot or no ball. 13 brings you back to the hills with a narrow uphill fairway leading to a monster 3 tier green. 14 - 16 are grand. 18 has a blind tee shot but a big green. Nice one to finish up on.
Every employee I have ever met there has been friendly and accommodating.
Great place to play.
Reservations were easy on GolfNow.com. We had an early afternoon tee time and got there a bit early to hit the range. We pulled up to bag drop and unloaded the bags. It wasn't until later that I figured it out. No one came to greet us. Flat out ignored!! I later saw the women who were hired there treat other golfers differently. They knew them. I had to ask Brooke where the heck the first tee was and generally where we were headed. Wait for it: "did you look at the map of the course?" she replied. I gave her my best "you have got to be freaking kidding me" look. It worked and my son and I got a wonderful overview of the flow of the golf course.
Once we got past that we played a very fair front nine. The back nine was a very different beast. It kicked our collective butts! The big uphill par 5 was something else. The right side was wet all the way to the green. Punished!
Great golf!! If you don't mind losing a few balls it can be a whole lot of fun. I imagine the subsequent rounds played there with knowledge of the layout will be a lot more enjoyable. We will see how the staff treats us next time.
Oh by the way, no driving range. There was just a net and the warmup balls were really dirty.
Spectacular scenery, extremely challenging course
Played for $55 at noon, which is a significant discount from their usual green fees. I like how they will allow singles to book online. Course was a little wet from the recent rains, so therefore cart path only, but wasn't very soggy at all. The greens themselves were soft but very fast. They were large and had multiple tiers and undulations - extremely challenging! Fairways on the most part are fairly wide but hit off line and you'll find water or the side of a tree-covered hill. I hadn't played in several weeks and my driver was way off, so hasta la vista to 6 balls that day. It's a beautiful course with picture-worthy views on at least half. Many holes have big elevation changes, so don't be fooled by the relatively short distance on the scorecard. The course and slope ratings are high for a reason!
