Stonehaven Golf Club

About
Set on the Braes of Cowie and providing spectacular views of the North Sea, Stonehaven Golf Club near Aberdeen has earned a reputation as a challenging short course that dazzles players with its epic scenery, including awe-inspiring views of the town of Stonehaven and the ancient fortress of Dunnottar Castle. Founded in 1888, Stonehaven Golf Club has only improved with time.
Featuring forced carries over deep gullies, and short holes set along steep cliffs - where you can often see dolphins and seals and other marine life in Stonehaven Bay - the golf course plays to just over 5,000 yards, but still provides a challenging play for golfers of all levels. Stonehaven is renowned for its immaculate and tricky greens and well-manicured fairways.
Of further interest to golfers that make Stonehaven Golf Club a part of their Scotland golf package, the Highland Fault line - which divides Scotland from east to west - runs through the golf course. In fact, on both holes No. 13 and No. 15, players will have a forced carry directly over the fault line over a gap known as "The Gully." Known for its epic beauty, Stonehaven will soon have a new course to crow about, an 18-hole championship course to be designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his world-class design team.

Hidden gem of a course
Great course, some tricky clifftop par 3’s with stunning views, well worth a visit
We had a terrific experience at Stonehaven, the views are spectacular, course layout is really fun and interesting. People there were very friendly. A great day!
Wow what a view
When you come to Stonehaven golf club you are coming for the views and they are spectacular. I have been all over Scotland golfing and they are some of the best vistas I have seen, it is beautiful. The welcome was great and everyone at the club was friendly and helpful, including a member who gave me a quick playing guide of the course layout. I spotted him halfway round and he gave me a wave and asked how I was getting on which was a nice touch. I found the course to be quirky, which I don’t mind, but some might be put off. There are a lot of par 3s, which might not be to everyone’s taste. Reviewers on here have said the layout was confusing, I did not find this issue, maybe they should take a score card, there’s a map on the back. I found the course well signposted and no problem to navigate. I was lucky to play the course on a sunny, non windy day and it was not busy. The only downside is that it is a bit of a walk for people. There are no carts, so if you struggle with injury or health issues ,maybe just go for the views and bacon rolls, which are great. As stated earlier, the course is quirky, but was in good condition although the greens were a bit furry, I don’t mind this, but I imagine it’s for the wind. The course suffers a little bit from blind holes on occasion and there is a beautiful hole where you play down to a hole on the peninsula, it’s fantastic. You need to remember to look left as there is a tee box, make sure it’s clear before you move. Reviews on here suggest the course is hazardous, but I only really found this hole a small issue. All in all a nice wee course with some of the best views you will ever see.
Fantastic Course
Stonehaven GC is a fantastic gem of a course. We paid a reduced fee through GolfNow however is worth the full rate. The majority of the course is played on the cliffs on the coastline with lots of challenges, the weather wasn’t kind to us with wind however that is all part of the fun. It should also be said, we had what I believe is the captains playing behind us, and they were incredibly helpful with guiding us through the course. An absolute must play in the North East, a place where we are spoiled for golf. We play off 20, this would be a great challenge for all levels.
Great course with fantastic scenery - well worth a visit to this coastal course.. had a great day of golf..👍
Off-peak bliss
First time playing the course since they reconfigured it to better accommodate the 2 x 9 hole layout.
We did get lost a few times & only played 17 holes as we missed the par3 7th over the gully, so perhaps improved signage is required.
I have played here in opens in the past , but stopped coming as the pace of play when busy, is very slow, due to it being quite tight & having a hole which tees off over 2 other fairways.
I am now a senior golfer & considering the course is short in yardage, I felt like I had walked much further, a few hills, but not excessively hilly, I may request a buggy when I return.
That, said an off-peak round when the course is quiet is very enjoyable & superb value for money.
The Course, club house, greenkeepers sheds & on course furniture are all well maintained & fresh looking.
I will return, the views are awe inspiring.
A different course experience great hospitality!
We chose Stonehaven as the greens were in play and we were assured to avoid frost. The course has lots of quirky holes with undulating fairways so one needs to think your way around. I found the uniqueness interesting and an altogether different challenge. The course has great views! The hospitality was very good, we had coffee and bacon rolls beforehand and beer and toasties afterwards… we were very well looked after.
Great winter golf alternative
With most other courses in the region closed (including my own), a visit to Stonehaven was most enjoyable.
Enjoyable Round
Even after all the bad weather recently in Aberdeenshire this course was open when many others weren’t. The course was in great condition and the wind just added to the challenge. Very enjoyable round of golf
Lovely course, splendid views
Don’t be fooled by the course only being around 5000 yards. The course is quite hilly, some tee shots are played over a creek and it does get rather windy making it a good test! Tees and fairways were in excellent condition; the greens had been spiked a few days before I played. Would recommend using a coloured ball as there are a lot of bird feathers which made it difficult finding your ball after playing a blind shot. The views are terrific and I’d play it again.
Enjoyable wide open course
Excellent service in the clubhouse, great food. The course is challenging & requires fitness as quite hilly. Greens are mossy but in good condition. Enjoyed our afternoon.
Spectacular Views
This is a short but difficult course with spectacular views of the NE coast and great value.
