Second time around… enjoyed it even more!
Played Green Lakes in 2021 for the first time, headed back in October of 2022 and the course was as good as I remembered. A real hidden gem in CNY.
An RTJ gem with great value
One of the things that stands out most about the course is the fact that it’s an interesting and challenging layout designed by a prominent name in Golf Course Design, Robert Trent Jones, at a great value.
This is one of the more difficult walks if you’re a walker, with the terrain being so hilly. The conditions are always great with speedy greens and tight fairways, and other than a few spots, the course drains well in rainy weather.
Great Course
This is a great local course that is always fun to play!
Nice course, greens challening
It's quite a hilly course, that I can't walk. But it's well maintained, nice bunkers now, and challenging greens. Must play in Syracuse area .
Great Course
We loved the course and the whole experience.
The scenery is gorgeous.
I like the trent jones designs. They are fair layouts.
Great Layout, Fun Course
For a public course, it is very hard to find a course with this type of value, layout, and scenery. Robert Trent Jones course, so you get some great holes.
The greens can be quite slow at times, but the amount of undulations in many of the greens can make for some tough putts. It is a shame the state doesn't give the course a little more money because it could really be a true gem. All together though, it's a really great course.
Green Lakes State Park - Great Course
I may be slightly biased on how I feel about this course, because I have always been a fan of any Robert Trent Jones course that I've played. This course's layout is awesome, and it is kept in great shape. I've played it numerous times, and have enjoyed every round that I've ever played here. The greens are all riddled with bunkers, and for an added challenge, almost every single green has some sort of twisted slope to it. The fairways are always kept up to standard, and are mowed short. The rough can sometimes be an absolute pain because of the length, but it gives that extra challenge, especially with the changing elevation. The greens roll well, not too fast, but not too slow. Water hazards are nearly non-existent, but being in a mountainous state park, the trees suffocate the course in an amazing way. It is a very popular course in the area, and therefore can sometimes get backed up pretty badly with slow players. The scenery makes up for it though, and one can see wildlife roaming the course (deer, turkey, chipmunks, etc...). Holes that are adjacent to the access road in the park will usually be teeming with hikers, bicyclists, and those out to take a stroll with their dogs. Love this course, and would recommend it to anyone I know!
A Hidden Gem
This course is great from start to finish. Tucked in Green Lakes State Park, you get a fairly tough course mixed with beautiful views of the hills and lake. If you are coming to visit or are just looking for a nice way to enjoy the sun, I 100% recommend this course.
Green Lakes is easy on the eyes with lots of character
I've played Green Lakes a couple of dozen times. It's what you'd expect from a Robert Trent Jones-designed course; very appealing to the eye and 18 holes, each with their own distinct personality. As a New York State owned and managed course, the condition of the course is not as good as it could be, but the bargain price, beautiful setting, and abundance of character put it towards the top of my list of public courses that I've played over my 30+ years of golfing life.
Real gem
A Robert Trent Jones gem in Upstate NY. Beautiful rolling layout at a reasonable rate. Best overall value and golfing experience in the Syracuse area.
