Baberton Golf Club

About
The Baberton Golf Club dates to 1893 and claims its place in history as the spot where the steel shaft originated. The clubs and their patents are stored in the clubhouse. Many members have represented Scotland and golfed professionally, including the European Tour's Ian Young and the one-time World Boys Champion and current TV personality Ewen Murray.
A round of golf at the Baberton Golf Club starts on Waugh's Knowe, a par 4 that measures 405 yards from the white tees, where restraint is required not to shoot long from the start. The very next hole could be called the golf course's signature: Named Baberton, the par-5 hole measures 501 yards and allows for a little more muscle. The round finishes on the 421-yard par-4 Redan, which features a demanding tee shot that needs to be aimed at the marker pole, as the slope kicks the ball to the left.
When booking your round at the Baberton Golf Club, make sure to also book a bit of time on the snooker table in the lounge, featuring a panoramic view of Edinburgh.

Lovely course - let down by facilities and fairway mats
Lovely course, great conditions. Only downside was we had to use fairway mats, even though it was 15 degrees and the course was in tip top condition. 18th was closed so we were back and forth on different holes, not the usual layout. Amazing conditions for March but there are no practice facilities - putting green was out of use and no nets / anything to warm up on. Great course, needs some practice nets!
What cracker
Played a day after some really wet weather. However course and in particular greens were super. I don’t play a lot of golf so don’t have many courses to compare to but this was really enjoyable. Plenty challenges for a high handicaper like myself. On a clear day you will have some brilliant views over to fife and the Fort h bridges. View off the 18th tee towards Edinburgh castle was a particular favourite. Chap in the pro shop was great, happy to spend sometime to explain about there course management.
Great test
Lovely course, the greens are immaculate. Few blind shots but the target poles are well thought out. Everything plays longer and there are few steepish hills to navigate otherwise and easy walk.
Thoroughly enjoyable
Chose Baberton by chance through the GolfNow app. Was a great find. Everyone was very friendly, the course was in great shape and our group of five had a fantastic time. Highly recommended.
Great venue lots of good views over Edinburgh from the highpoints of the course.
Course was in excellent condition especially the greens. Thoroughly enjoyed our day would definitely play again. Beautiful clubhouse for food and drink after.
Greens in very good condition
A variable layout with a lot of big slopes which take the ball a lot further if you catch the slope on the drive. A few holes which cross over each other, generally long par 3’s. We only played 15 and think only 1 par 5. Quality fairways and greens. Friendly staff on arrival.
Wonderful staff
The staff was very friendly and helpful. Course was in great shape.
Fantastic welcome, course in great condition for the time of year, lovely clubhouse.
Great course, helpful Pro Shop but shame about the hospitality
Played here for the 2nd time (both members of Swanston) and once again enjoyed the course despite some iffy weather. Pro shop experience very good. Super helpful and even lent us some mats as we’d forgotten ours and all so far so friendly.
It was only after we finished and wanted.a drink and some lunch in the clubhouse that we lost our faith. Main clubhouse entrance locked (on a Friday mid morning on a busy course!!?) and even though we buzzed TWICE no one answered or even came down to let us in. At least 2 people walked past us on the way to the loo/locker room and despite looking straight at us, didn’t let us in either.
We wanted to come in and spend money in your club and this is welcome we received. Funnily enough the last time we played we made to the bar and whilst waiting for lunch to arrive we’re politely given the third degree about how we had got in and who we were with. “..Who signed you in?..” We said we were visiting but felt very much under scrutiny as unfamiliar faces.
A very disappointing end to a nice mornings golf. And in case you were wondering…our lunch budget went to the Spylaw’s coffers in Colinton instead.
Challenging course
Unfortunately we got stuck behind a 3 ball in golf karts that just would not let anyone through, but it is a great course with exceptional greens. The course is very hilly which makes it even more of a challenge.
Barberton today
Beautiful course with a variety of holes. Quite challenging and greens very fast.
Course in cracking condition. You will find it hard to find better greens anywhere
Nice course
Nice course would play here again if a deal came up .
All round great day
I played here recently, I arrived early for food and to experience clubhouse. It was excellent from the moment I arrived. I ordered a light snack and soft drink, food was at my table within 5 mins, fresh and tasty. The bar manager Tracy was super welcoming and attentative. Darren (pro) was really helpful, and even set my clubs up on the electric trolley I’d booked pre round. If your in Edinburgh visiting, or a local looking for a round or group booking, I’d highly recomend you experience the hospitality and welcome at Baberton Golf Course.
Mr Jay Fraser.
Apart from not being allowed to use Driver on the 1st tee this was great value for money, course in great condition, food afterwards was really nice and the Pro was very helpful
