Royal Troon Golf Club - The Portland Course

About
The Portland Course at Royal Troon Golf Club came about in June of 1895, though it was called the Relief Course until 1924.
The Portland Course at Royal Troon Golf Club is a links golf course, and it is more sheltered and shorter than the Old Course, with holes that make their way over land covered by gorse and broom and has five par-3 holes.
Save some strength for the back nine on the Portland Course at Royal Troon Golf Club: It has the golf course's par-5 holes - all four of them.

Disappointing
Given that this is course is part of the Royal Troon brand, I was expecting more. There is nothing particularly wrong with the course but given the price paid I would have expected better. The layout lacks excitement and there are no spectacular holes. There are better courses for less than half the price as part of Troon Links.
Surprised and impressed
I had read reviews on line that suggested that the course lies in the shadows of it big brother. For me, the proximity of the Old Course and views across the fairways and famous landmarks only improved my enjoyment of Portland. The course was in great condition and for much of the course there was good variety between the holes. The front nine were visually much stronger in my opinion with 3-8 the strongest stretch on the course, but I enjoyed every hole. A very warm welcome and I would return.
