Ojai Valley Inn

About
Opened in 1923, Ojai Valley Inn Golf Course is one of California's first great courses. Over the decades that the course has been open, it has hosted a number of professional players and celebrities ranging from Arnold Palmer to Will Smith. George C. Thomas, Jr., who created the Riviera, collaborated with Billy Bell to design the original golf course but Jay Morrish made the layout considerably more challenging with renovations in 1988. Ten years later, two holes from the original Thomas/Bell layout that were lost during a redesign following WWII were completely restored and incorporated into the layout. The challenging golf course is very narrow in some spots and it features undulating greens that putt fast and true. The layout is not particularly long but it requires accuracy and proper club selection in order to score well.

Another Great Round!
Annually several of us travel from Chicago to see family and play golf in the LA area. A MUST stop over the last several years has been Ojai. We found the course in excellent condition from tees, to fairways, to greens. Ojai is in much better condition than other courses we played during the week. Every time we play here the staff is helpful and the pace of play excellent. There are multiple elevations throughout the course, beautiful landscaping, and a sense of history. For the intermediate player, the course is challenging and will reward good shots. We will return next trip.
Not sure if they want locals
I’m new to golf but I have decided this was my “treat myself” course. Yesterday was my good friend’s birthday and I wanted to take him out for a great day of golf and why not Ojai Valley Inn. I actually told him let’s arrive early to get breakfast and I have never been to the Pro Shop. So we do and the tavern is closed (no big deal) and we head to the club house and we basically had to greet the host. No issues there it’s a resort and we are just browsing. We head out and tee off. Midway through I get a notification to see the proshop and at the turn I see them. The same host tells me I have not paid and I am confused as I have used GN and usually prepay. She insists this isn’t possible and is terse and maybe rude. I pay but as I scroll I sure have prepaid before. Just not the proper resort type of behavior. There are a lot of courses in this price range the cafe never opened. This was the worst experience I’ve had and her attitude just made it worse and it wasn’t like she or the resort was busy.
Punched greens
Here’s the thing. Every course needs to have some sort of communication on when the greens are punched and when the process would be complete. The he greens were the only thing that was not pristine.
Great satisfaction on the course
My husband and I are really enjoyed the course for conditions matter, layout matter, and all around views, etc. Definitely we like to come back soon.
Great Value and Amazing Day
They were working on the greens so we got a great deal to play an amazing course. The staff and course is top notch and always a pleasure. You really can’t beat a day at the course.
Wonderful golf course
A truly great golf course in every way.
Well worth the cost.
Beautiful spot tricky course
A little bit of work to get there, but the course is fun to play and the amenities are nice.
Not with the money.
Everything was a hassle.
Getting around the resort is a pain.
Nothing is near anything else.
So many non golfers walking on the course created a distraction to golfers and injury risk to others.
Took 5:20 to play. Tee times should be spread out.
Great course
We had a wonderful round. Traps, greens and fairways are in excellent condition.
Dramatic
I'm from Miami, so the elevation changes here were eye opening and beautiful. One of the most beautiful and interesting courses I've played and a tremendous value for the money in my opinion. One thing, they desperately need a ranger to speed up pace of play. This is not a course for beginners and yet we found ourselves behind a foursome that were looking for their balls on every shot. They finally let us play through on hole 4, but then we caught another foursome that was also very slow. No one on the course to manage this, sadly.
Extremely slow play!
While the course is beautiful I regret to say I wouldn’t recommend paying the money to play here. I really wanted to say otherwise! From the moment we drove in we immediately noticed how AWFUL the signage was throughout the compound. Parking was difficult to find and even harder to find the pro shop with ZERO signs to follow. No one was there to greet me and I didn’t know where to check in. Along the course the signs were minimal and sometimes nonexistent.. Frustrating when you have no sense of the course. The play was so slow and the two gentleman I started with left at the 6th hole!! Give yourself 5 hours or more to play. Pretty grounds though!
Forget your handicap!!
This is extremely challenging =which is pricy for me since my usual round is under $100. It is very challenging and all my playing partners shot at least 10 shots over their handicap as did I.
Having said all of this, I would love to play here more often and tame this course. This will have to wait until I return from Missouri.
Fast greens and fairways are beat up
Course isn't in the best condition right now for the prjce ($140 rd). Greens are running very fast and the course is not near as lush as I've seen in the past. Brown patches too
Great day
Beautiful area and a very nice course. Staff was excellent.
Great greens!
First time playing here and loved it. Staff was great, course was in very good conditions and the greens were darn near perfect! Birdies 18 to shoot 71, will absolutely be back!
