Turnberry Isle Country Club - Soffer Course

About
Turnberry Isle Country Club boasts two 18-hole championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Ray Floyd later reworked the courses in 2007 but he retained the best characteristics of the original layouts. At more than 7,000 yards from the back tees, the Soffer Course is the longer and more difficult of the two golf courses at Turnberry. Despite its length, the entire resort only covers 300 acres, making Soffer mostly narrow with holes winding alongside each other and separated by tall trees or mounding. The rolling terrain offers a variety of elevation changes and the twisting layout also features many tricky doglegs. Strategically placed water hazards and carefully carved bunkers come into play throughout as well. The pristine white sand contrasts beautifully with the lush fairways and verdant tropical foliage, providing the perfect setting for a round.

Upscale SoFla golf in an interesting environment
One factor that can add to the experience of playing a golf course is its sense of place. How does the course relate to its surroundings? What effect does this have on the experience?
There are two signifiers at the Soffer Course. The first is that it (along with the Miller Course) occupies an oasis-like tract of valuable real estate ringed by tall condominium towers, a familiar South Florida sight. The second is the vegetation around the Soffer course, which is lush and jungle-like, providing some sense of separation on a compact layout. That layout is solid but with parallel fairways where you'd best listen out for shouts of "Fore!" from adjacent fairways. The Paspalum turf is maintained just about perfectly - the fairways and greens are nice and firm. Holes like the second and 13th stand out for their fallaway greens that require a deft touch.
It's an expensive round (with mandatory forecaddie), but if you're considering it, that means you can afford it. You'll enjoy the service, the scenery and the golf.
Awesome!
Absolutely love the course! It's challenging yet fair. The Golf Sales Manager, Valeria, is super cool and if you ever need a last minute tee time for a large group like We did, she can get it done! Many Thanks to her!!

Great Golf and a Great Resort
I am new to GolfAdvisor - was surprised to see only one review of Turnberry. I have been to Turnberry Isle (TI) twice. Once several years ago and June of 2015. The Soffer course is first rate in every respect. Great and challenging layout, beautifully landscaped, manageable over water holes, excellent condition and great staff.
Their is a second course, The Miller course which is a par 70 with 6 Par 3s and four par 5s. Great fun to play. So the two together make for a great golf getaway. Of course the Soffer course is the premier course.
The resort itself is just terrific. Everything about the resort is first class, the rooms are large with modern touches from the TV to the bathroom fixtures. Housekeeping is impeccable. The hotel common areas are terrific with two pools both beautifully landscaped. One pool for adults and a second pool complex with a waterfall, slides and a river pool. Two great restaurants and I do not mean good "hotel restaurants" these are serious restaurants: BURBON STEAK and CORSAIR BY SCOTT CONANT (Italian). Breakfast at Corsair is as good as it gets - so I recommend the breakfast and golf room deal.
Be aware that there is no beach - they have a beach club which requires a 10 minute drive (Shuttle) but I think it is closing down as TI is building a huge condo building on this property. So if beach is important not the place to stay. Too bad as everything else is great. For a nothing but golf getaway or for a lovely resort and family vacation, if beach is not key, this place is the best. Lastly if shopping is important to some in your party - Aventura Mall is across the street and Bal Harbor is about 2 miles away. Both very upscale particularly Bal Harbor. South Beach if you want some insanity is about a 30 minute drive. BTW when in the resort it is so well laid out and landscaped that you would never think you are surrounded by condos and a Mall across the street. Absolutely feels like a resort when you are on the property. So great for families in all respects.
Lastly - only a 20 minute drive from Fort Lauderdale AirPort.
