Lovely Sandbelt Club
Again tucked away in the eastern semi industrial suburbs of Melbourne is Spring Valley GC.
It is your typical sand belt layout with tough bunkered green complexes and sloping greens. SV has the extra challenge of holes that bring water into play. I found it quite similar to Southern GC in style and it is less manicured than its higher rated rivals on the sand belt.
I played on a lovely sunny day and the course was in fabulous condition. The fairways were spongy and like carpet and the greens smooth and true. It is a more forgiving course than its other sand belt counterparts as much of the tree lined rough areas have been cleared out, making it easier to find balls that have gone off the radar.
My Favourite holes were the down hill par 3 10th, which has a lovely green complex with deep bunkers front and a run off area to the 11th fairway behind. As usual be accurate on the par 3s on the sand belt. The par 4 4th is also a lovely hole that brings you to a pleasant green complex that lets you over look the 15th green, 16th tee and 5th tee. A wonderful little corner of the course.
Sadly the course is next door to a landfill site that has methane gas taps letting off steam, so your round may be punctuated by a less than pleasant aroma!
Excellent clubhouse with friendly staff. Excellent putting area and chipping green.
Hidden Gem
What a great course and one that doesn't get the accolades as some of the other well known courses on Melbourne's famous Sandbelt. A great golfing experience.
