A classic Irish parkland that's been restored
Alister MacKenzie fans must come take this unique parkland for a test drive. A three-year renovation completed two years ago by Martin Hawtree has restored the course to glory. Hawtree renovated tees, reshaped the 12th green and restored all the MacKenzie bunkers, where the fingers (or "explosions" as Hawtree calls them) point in all directions. The fourth tee box, built for a visit by Seve Ballesteros in 1983, introduces an interesting run of holes set within a rock quarry. These are fantastic, secluded holes with interesting nuances, including a lake at No. 4 and a wild Pinehurst-like turtleback green at No. 5. The rest of the parkland holes can feel a bit jammed together. There is a spot where the third and 10th greens and 11th and 14th tees are all within close proximity. Many golfers just won't appreciate the old-school quirks of hitting a tee shot directly over a green they just finished putting - which happens twice - or driving over the range at No. 16. When the design is a MacKenzie, though, it's easier to forgive these sins.
