A private club with some resort access
The Fazio is treated like a private members club by the resort, but there might be a loophole or two for public players. I met some resort guests who given the opportunity to play it while my large group was playing a tournament on the Nicklaus course. Like anything else, timing is everything. If you're looking to check this course off your bucket list, then it might be worth planning your visit around an opportunity like this one. It's a really strong course.
What a treat
We were scheduled to play the Nicklaus course, but a junior tournament resulted in backed-up play so they gave us the opportunity to play the Fazio course.
Favorite holes: Hole 8 is so unique with a forced carry par 3 over a canyon with caves. I hit the green but walked down to check it out, if you hit short you'll need to hit a flop shop up about 35 feet in the air onto the green. A lot of fun risk reward holes, especially hole 14 which is a drive-able par 4 with a long narrow green. And hole 17 is the first course I've played with two greens with the flag changing based on the day.
Overall the course is in immaculate shape, and is very peaceful with a sense of isolation on most holes. The fairways are generous if you pick the right club and target, and the greens have a fair amount of contouring which mean you need to miss in the right areas. It's a strategic course with many forced carries if you want to attack the pins/bomb it/go for the green in two, and has ample areas to lay up for a shorter approach into the green. The staff made you feel welcomed and were more than accommodating. Would play again if given the chance.
Loved this course. We played on a warm day and the course was playing very firm and fast.
Best course in the states
This is my new favorite color ruse I in the US. Such a fun course to play. Plenty of elevation changes, risk/reward holes, and no two holes the same. Can not wait to play it again.
Spectacular Experience, One of Oregon's Best!
For year's I had been pondering the best way to play Pronghorn's private course designed by Tom Fazio. I'd been looking forward to it for years. Last Saturday it finally came to fruition thanks to a friend who is a member at Illahe Hills CC.
I knew the experience would be good, but it ended up being perfect. I could not have asked for better weather, course conditions, caddie and company.
I could go on and on about it, but you'll have to imagine a perfectly maintained course from tee to green, in a desert, with no one else around. The quietest and most comfortable round I've ever played. Our forecaddie John was amazing, he knew the greens, he knew the course, and he was a perfect 4th person to enjoy 18 holes with.
If you ever get a chance to play, make it happen. It's not cheap but it will provide for amazing memories.
