Baytowne at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort

About
Baytowne Golf Club at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort is routed from the beach to the bay, providing stunning views along the way. The course rolls across the few elevation changes that the area has to offer. Although it opened in 1984, the golf course didn't reach its peak until it underwent extensive renovation in 2005, which were carried out by the original designer, Tom Jackson. The layout features rolling fairways lined with mature pines that are generous and times but can be tight when you least expect it. The large, undulating greens can also play faster than what you might be expecting. Water, which comes into play on 12 holes, is a prominent feature of Baytowne Golf Club as are the numerous bunkers strategically placed throughout.

Fun course, beautiful setting
Beautiful setting! Wonderful staff. Back 9 ion pristine shape….front 9 not maintained as well.
They let 5-some’s play
We were behind a 5-some that slowed everything down. When we called the pro shop, they said they let 5-some’s play. Never heard of this. Thats the only thing negative - otherwise it was great golfing.
Wishes
Wishes:
Bunkers that are not like concrete.
Drainage for areas that are always wet.
Tee boxes that are flat.
And a pro shop/halfway house with improved menu and seating
It was cart path only so got a nice walk in
Perhaps more installed drainage would make the course even more enjoyable.
Most of the bunkers are very firm
Average course. Similar to a higher end municipal course
You can have a good time playing golf here. Just don’t have high expectations. Pretty much all aspects of the course were average. Friendly staff, FYI, no towels or water anywhere on the course. Bring your own or pay for it. Sand was mediocre, at best. Fairways in OK condition. Greens in good condition. Pace of play was slow; a bit over 4.5 hours.
If it rains the day before, check to see if the range is open. We had rain the night before (not that much, in my opinion), and it was closed. Also, the course was still very wet with carts on path. I found this surprising because my previous experiences in Florida led me to believe courses there drain well. Not this one.
Lots of traffic noise on the back nine, and I do mean “lots”. I’m surprised others have not mentioned this.
Again, as long as your expectations are not high, you can play a fund and have fun.
Baytowne!
Pretty good golf course. For February, the golf course is in very good shape. Grass on some tee boxes is a bit thin, but expected this time of year. For a high end resort, all three public play golf courses are sub par from a maintenance standpoint. Most bunkers are not dressed or raked daily, some are almost hard-pan. Greens are usually pretty good EXCEPT Baytowne. They are always painfully slow. I have been playing these courses for 20+ years and I’m a member at the Sandestin Golf Club so I have significant experience here. The Raven/Baytowne practice range is average at best. The grass is pretty good. Too often they don't have an adequate number of stations set up. And way too often the practice balls are dirty. It would not take a ton of extra care and attention to significantly improve the overall golf experiences at Sandestin. It just needs management that cares about it enough to see the details are important to the golfing members and guests.
No Club House
Just a pro shop and a small outdoor place to grab a beer. Kinda like a halfway house.
But the course was very good.
Good Course
Overseed greens are good but slow. The course was in good shape.
Good Course
Overseed is always good. Greens are a little slow but smooth.
Excellent Layout
Very good condition for a February round. Greens were a bit slow. Pace of play was fantastic. Finished round in less than 3 hours, on a Saturday morning. Some challenging holes, but a fair layout. Would definitely recommend this course and will play again.
