Played before but way below expectations
Having played the TwentyTen course in the past, I came to the resort with friends who have not and had boasted about the stunning course they were going to play.
Unfortunately, having such a wet winter takes it’s toll on our golf courses, but in this case, parts of the course should not have been open due to severe saturation.
Between us; we lost over 10 balls plugging in the middle of the fairways. Added to an already frustrating round and could have dealt with better from our local golf course at home.
Stunning facilities otherwise. Massive shame about to condition of the course.
2010, Amazing course!
Amazing course but very long! The fairways were very boggy in parts and every ball was plugged! The greens were in amazing condition and was pretty fast greens!
30 mins before tee off, you go to the range where you have complimentary balls to hit! (As many as you like) and then you go over to the tee box 5 mins before tee time!
Good value
Great experience, bag drop off , transport to range /practice area . Name on locker , souvenir bag tag . Course good condition for winter , good challenge built to host Ryder cup . Will be back
Should have been closed
First of all let me say The staff were lovely. From walking in to out on the course and the bar, all happy to help.
The course however should have been closed. Losing balls in the fairway due to severe boggy conditions.
They kept it open purely to continue making money, the offer of 4 holes of play and then getting a refund didn’t suit us as one of the players had travelled a great distance to play. The course should have been close well in advance. Not worth the £56 price tag for those conditions.
Immaculate
The fairways was boggy but understandable for the amount of rain we have had but hats off to the greenkeepers, not a single bit of mud or water on the greens or tee box. Amazing condition.
Should have been closed
Utterly impossible conditions. No warning and no apology. £100 per head to walk around a bog. Took 6hrs to get round - 2 of which were looking for balls on the fairway. Disgraceful!!!
Celtic Manor 2010
Fabulous course; great experience from start to finish.made to feel special with personalised welcome, lockers, complimentary practice area and the engraved meta bag tag at the end
You only.play this once - it was an experience and one that made great memories.
Good all round
Winter golf ground very soft so played a lot longer than card but good round of golf
Lovely course
What a course, to follow in the footsteps of the successful Ryder cup team and play this course was yet again everything you could hope or ask for, also helps if you have an half decent round too, stunning course and stunning scenery to go with it, never get bored playing this course even if it’s only once a year
Should not have been open
As always, the experience and staff and what they give you was second to none.
Unfortunately, through no fault of their own the weather was and had been atrocious for the last week.
What is their responsibility though is allowing people who have paid a lot of money play on ground that is not suitable for that much rain.
The fairways were like walking on a river on some holes.
When paying the sort of money that they charge due to the premium of being a Ryder Cup venue it is their responsibility to be offering you a premium product and if if not presentable as such then they should not allow you out there.
The course was unplayable in certain areas and with fairways in conditions you would expect at a local pay and play.
Every bunker had water in it.
I understand they have to make money and it is your responsibility if you wish to play or not, but with such a long cancellation policy that is impossible to decide upon with the South Wales weather.
A little underwhelmed
The course was in good condition, green's were rolling great and pretty fast.
Plenty of staff out there maintaining the area's.
However the course is a little uninspiring and there aren't too many holes that stick out in your mind. It's obvious to see why it held a Ryder Cup, because the way the course is set up, large crowds could easily line fairways and around greens etc, but take them crowds away and there's little to catch the eye.
There are a few really nice holes, but not enough to justify the price.
The pace of play is slow, took over 5 hours for a 4 ball. This is mainly due to people in buggies have to stick to cart paths. This often means they're 100 yds away from their ball and have to walk back and to for clubs, yardage etc.
There's a few nice touches like a photographer on the first, free bag tags etc, but at the price you pay you'd want something extra. Also it £6.50 a beer in the club house, shocking! And you can't pay cash or on card, you have to pay by some silly app. Slightly disappointed by whole experience, I won't be rushing back!
A little underwhelming
In the summer I think this would be a very scenic course. It was obvious to see that the greens had just been hollow tined so hopefully later on in the year they would be in better condition and the ball will roll a better.
I felt the course was a little bland, I didn’t come off the course and think ‘I’ve just played a Ryder cup course’’. However this could have been down to the time of year.
Great value - Covid restrictions still in place
Excellent value for money at moment, mainly due to lack of normal service and benefits that you would get so rates have been reduced.
I understand the restrictions they are working under so very happy to get a good deal.
2010 course , 8 years after ryder cup
BE WARNED
i'm a walker usually BUT you need buggies here as the green to next tee distances are often big, and as vast majority of golfers justifiably take buggies, if you walk you will constantly be having to let groups through
Now the important issue is that the policy of CM is that YOU MAY NEVER LEAVE THE CART PATH WITH A BUGGY . so most times you have as far to get to your ball as your shot is to the green , you cannot see your distance to green ,obstacles , need to go high or low etc etc and will often have the wrong club with you when you get to the ball (at ones stage I just took whole bag off the cart and went to my ball a few times .
its incredibly annoying , CM staff say its the greenkeeper's demand to protect the course , well that's rubbish , I have played courses like Gleneagles, London Club and the Grove that are in far better condition than CM2010 and have no such silly restrictions.
Due to this , I would warn against paying up for Celtic Manor , it spoils the experience completely , pity as it's a terrific golf course layout
