Good Course. Great Value. Exceptional Staff!
Went to DT to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint. From wild antelope wondering around all over the place to the beautiful views and forgiving layout, this is just a fun track meant to allow golfers of all levels to come on in to challenge and enjoy.
Pros:
Staff. They were, in a word, perfect. From beginning to end. All of them.
Layout was amazing. Views 360 degrees. It was a bit windy which added to the challenge but no worries - the course will forgive the occasional bad shot.
Course condition - exceptional. From tees to greens. This course was pristine.
Level of fun. Off the charts!
Cons:
As odd as it might sound both my partner and I ended up with mud stains all over our legs and pants. Not sure how or why. But when we got back to the hotel it was dried clay. Hard to scrub off. Had to have come off of the cart seat.
Smallish range. There were people waiting for slots.
Summary:
This course is a must play. I had to really stretch this out to even come up with cons frankly. Talk about "first world problems".
Come to DT, enjoy the views, have a hot dog at the turn and just take it all in. This is one of those courses that is an experience not just a round of golf. And I highly recommend it.
Fun, unique track
Course sits on a plateau with nice views of the valley below. Some of the holes on the front nine play into canyons and gullies within the Mancos Shale giving it a unique Badlands look at times. The back nine is flat and pretty featureless and more of a lynx style feel to it. Water comes into play on a couple holes as does some forced carries. Conditions of the course were fairly good throughout. Not the most glamorous course you'll ever play but definitely a fun play and an absolutely solid value. Would definitely play here again if in the area.
A Challenge, But Not Best In The Area
Wife and I played here while vacationing in the area. This is a ‘links’ style course in the sand hills north of Delta. Great scenery/views. Not a tree anywhere in sight and not much water. The layout is on the shortish side. The challenge comes in the routing of holes and in the speed of the greens (11 in the day we were there). Lots of blind shots or shots with big elevation changes - both mean you’re guessing where to hit and what Club to pull. I will probably enjoy it more if I play it again. Staff was great - friendly and helpful. Conditions were OK. It was a good experience, but I’m not sure I would rush back there.
Whole lotta fun
Played here twice in the last week. The course has shot options on pretty much every hole. Either the hero carry or the safe play; of course, the hero carry leaves a short shot or a chance to go for the green in two on a par 5. The safe shot off the tee, leaves a longer approach or guarantees three shots on a par 5. I found this to be a lot of fun.
The routing is cool and there are unique holes in a quarry-esque area. There are two short par 4s with shot options-most notably on the 13th hole. The par 3s were fun but did not have much variety as far as club needed. The par 5s all had the hero carry option.
As for the rest, there is a putting green and driving range to warm up. For the end of winter, the course was in good condition and I anticipate a great summer. There is a restaurant for before or after a round. The staff was great; I showed up and they got me out.
Best of all, this course is an exceptional value. It is only 40-45 per round with a cart during shoulder season. They also have great deals during the year and you can play for $65. If you are 55 and up, they have a $30 green fee on some days. Considering that this is considered a top 5 public course in Colorado, all of these prices are a great deal.
I would give this 4.5 stars and highly recommend a round here if in the area. It brings the fun back into golf.
A different world
Devils thumb combines smooth quick greens with great variety in holes. There are some short thought provoking par 4's and some longer 4's that have water and require great precision. Plenty of sand, elevation changes and wonderful backdrops with the grand Mesa, the Adobe hills and the west elk mountains. One of the most unique and fun courses you can find. A bargain too.
Fun course
We make an effort to play here several times each year even though we live on the front range.
We enjoy the course and the people which is why we keep coming back for the last 10 years.
One of the best kept secrets in Colorado
This course is unlike any other golf experience in Colorado. As my grandfather put it its like"playing golf on the moon". If you have not played this course you need too long trip to Delta but worth it if you are a golf enthusiast. Cant beat the value if you book through golfnow.
The devil could not have designed a better course in this wasteland
I live in the area and always make it a point to play this course a couple of times a year. I have never played a better course for the value.
Fun course
Fun course with lots of Elevation and tough terrain.
The view was as good as the course!
Just north of Delta, CO, Devil's Thumb has a lot to offer: nicely manicured greens, rolling fairways, and some hilly terrain as well. Don't plan to do very well out of the bunkers as they are very hard-packed. The rough is relatively sparse for this part of the country, except for the sage bushes which will eat up your shots. A family of pronghorn antelope roams the course, quite at home and beautiful to watch. The San Juan and San Miguel mountains are clearly visible to the south and east, respectively, with the south face of the Grand Mesa to the north. Altogether a great outing!
A gem!
A great course with a very fun and interesting layout. The greens ran true! They are amazing. The fairways are in great shape. A few tricky holes a very enjoyable round.
I didn't have any food or beverage.
High Badlands Golf
The golf course keeps you engrossed , but don't forget to look at the views. Some interesting risk/reward tee shots . Keep it in the grass , or it's rock , sand , and high desert "gorse" bushes. The greens have enough humps and swales to make pitching and putting as interesting as it gets. This is a terrific golf course. We were treated perfectly by the staff and the deck is a nice place for an after golf beverage.
This course has great variety
From straight and level to elevated and blind landing tee shots this course has everything to offer. This course stays in good shape and usually can stay open year round despite being in Colorado.
great
Place was great, it is a hidden gem. well worth the drive.
Great Course
Such a great course. Amazing staff.... thx Ken Brown. Check the wind advisory before you go.
Great views
One of our favorite courses on the Western Slope. Hole fourteen is one of the most scenic and fun drivable par fours in the state.
Golfing In Colorado in November - Excellent!
Hadn't golfed in a few years and was a little worried about golfing in Colorado in the winter but this course was in fantastic condition from tee boxes - to fairways - to greens. Excellently maintained! Staff was very friendly and overall experience was 5 stars. Even though the weather was cold, many of the holes are protected from the wind by the stunning landscape. I highly recommend this course and can't wait to go back.
Challenging but fair
First time to play the course and there are a few holes I'd play differently next time out...out in the middle of nowhere and in great shape!
Perfect day.
The weather was perfect. Scenery perfect. Course condition immaculate. A great variety oh holes. My game somewhat lacking. Not the course's fault.
Devil's Thumb may be the best golf value in the Southwest. A great place. Very unpretentious. Play it as soon as you can.
