Enjoy the wide open spaces at Tallgrass
Tallgrass was a pleasant surprise on Long Island. There's nothing special about the flat, wide open field where the course was laid out. The interest comes in trying to master the course's massive greens and avoid its crater-like bunkers. All the credit goes to Gil Hanse, who has since gone onto architectural fame, redesigning Doral's Blue Monster and the Olympic course in Brazil.
Tall grasses frame the playing corridors in this wind-swept landscape. They are wispy enough that usually golfers can find their balls and even attempt a recovery shot, although they rarely work out as intended. The fairway bunkers are full shot penalties. They're true links bunkers where only wedges will get the ball back in play. I especially enjoyed the mix of par 3s.
Course Closed
Played the course when I used to live in NYC.
Course was a very early Gil Hanse course. I believe it closed and was turned into a solar farm.
Say goodbye to Tallgrass
Tallgrass is scheduled to close for good in the "any day now" category. Upkeep shows it. I know its late in the season. To say they have lost the love is an understatement. Unless your paying next to nothing, save your money, and bid goodbye to another Suffolk County public course.
tallgrass
love tallgrass,, one of the best layout on the island
challenging course
the course is very exciting to play....every hole has a certain challenge...however the pace of play was slow, a 5-10 minute wait on every hole. the staff was excellent....overall a nice course to play
Tall Grass
NPace of play was good, staff were friendly, greens were a little beaten up by players who don't respect the game.
Excellent links design and layout
Enjoyed an early morning round on this beautifully designed track. It's a real shame this track will close it's doors at the end of the year. Playing here you use just about every club in your bag. Big hitters will enjoy bombing it on open fairways while strategically placed bunkers and fescue calls for well placed tee shots on other holes. Due to the inevitable closure, just enough course maintenence is done to keep this course playable. Teeboxes are a little chewed up, fairways and greens are still playable, and the clubhouse is kept clean. Hopefully I will get the chance to play this track once again.
Great layout
Played this course several times 3 years ago and always loved it. The course has a great layout and is a true links course,, however the course has drop its standards a lot. Almost no sand in the bunkers and a lot of weeds and shrub in the bunkers. Looked like nobody repairs there pitch marks on the greens anymore and the tee boxes had a lot of divots, such a shame . It was a fantastic course. I hope this course get back to the standard it once had
Great fairways and greens.
Played in a twosome in 3hrs 15 min. Very nice layout, fairways and greens in better shape than my private club which was closed for aeration. Traps could use some work and more sand.
Great layout
One of the best courses in Suffolk County. Good value. Greens are excellent. Only drawback is condition of bunkers. Sand is always hard packed.
Hopefully solar farm is delayed and course is open next year.
A little bit of everything
Booked it for $22 a man. Can't beat that anywhere. I've played it at least 20 times in my life. Fair course with punishment for stray shots. Fairways, tee boxes and most greens are in good shape. A couple of them had some type of fungus but I guess with the pending sale/condominium situation, it's to be expected. Still a good value for $45 but I wouldn't pay more at this point.
Sad to see it go
The course was in great condition, which was suprising since it is closing at the end of the year. Will miss it.
Hole in one
Course was in excellent condition. Unfortunately this course at the end of the year will be turned into a solar farm.
Play felt slow a we were a twosome (4 1/2hrs). My friend has a hole in one on the 8th hole. 158yrds, used a rescue club (3 iron) - difficult par 3.
Poor course management
6 hour round? This course is being sold, September 1. The workers don't Care anymore, and the course condition is going in the tank and nobody seems to care. Greens are trashed, marks and uneven growing of grass on them. Don't think they are watering anymore. We've received little rain and these fairways are brown. Sad to see this course go. Was one of the top public courses on the Island. Wish someone there cared a little
Great course
If you want to play in Scotland go here.
Links Golf @ Tallgrass
I went out with a few friends on a weekend to play a links-style course before the British Open next week. I was pleasantly surprised by what the course had to offer. The course layout was exceptional albeit slightly difficult. Most of the greens are protected on all sides by daunting bunkers. There was no starter at the 1st tee, which made it kind of annoying when we had a group of 2 on our tails after the 3rd hole. All in all, the course makes you think and is a challenging yet fun at the same time.
Tall grass
Played a few times great challenge greens are fast , need some attention along with the rest of the coarse . Being neglected do to lack of play , but still a good challenge
Very disappointed:
I had not played this course in a couple of years. I was very surprised had bad the course conditions were. This place was always a gem and to see how bad it fell off, is sad. It is still a beautiful place and the pace of play was really good (probably because the demand is down and a lot of 2 somes). Hopefully it will somebody get back to way it was. Until then,!i will not be playing there.
