Lyon Oaks Golf Club

About
Although Lyon Oaks Golf Club is situated in southwest Oakland County, the course has an "up north" feel thanks to acres of mature hardwood forests dotted with pristine wetlands. The golf course strikes a nice balance between being challenging and player friendly. The spacious layout doesn't have any adjacent fairways and you won't find any intimidating tee shots either. The fairways are wide and forgiving with ample landing areas and the mildly undulating greens hold putts very well. There are still plenty of fairway and greenside bunkers to avoid, though, and water hazards come into play frequently as well. You'll have some opportunities to use your driver off the tees at Lyon Oaks Golf Club, but shot placement is just as important as distance. The challenging round finishes with a scenic par 5 that is reachable in two if you're strategic about it.

Wildlife Abounds
Lyon Oaks is located on the grounds of parkland. The layout has a real up north feel. The course is in excellent condition from tee to green with a fun, challenging, interesting layout. The golf carts are in excellent condition and the staff a friendly and welcoming.
Slow and Expensive
People need to get real with the ratings.
I booked this course because it was highly rated and expensive hoping for a nice course where with decent pace of play and conditions. Not until I get to the course, put my credit card in the machine and pay, does the course mention "by the way, the greens were aerated today". Nothing on the website.
It was $61 for a Monday afternoon tee time. This puts it in the most expensive ~10% of public courses in the area. When I booked online, the reservation said we were teeing off on 1, but they sent us off on 10. There were 2 groups on the 10th tee box when we showed up at our scheduled tee time - ended up going off 15 minutes late.
It was 2 hours and 45 minutes to play the first 9 holes. We were over 5 hours for 18. Every shot was a 5+ minute wait. Impatient golfers behind us hit into us (we weren't the problem), which prompted us to call the clubhouse after a ball landed a few feet from us. "We'll talk to him". They didn't - we watched. They hit into us again, we called again and they said "we'll speak to them again", which was just dishonest.
Tried ordering food at the turn - the only thing they had was hot dogs. Drinks weren't even bottled - filled up with ice. Worker was slow and couldn't figure out the computer, took about 5 minutes to do what takes other courses 15 seconds. No drink cart on the course.
The tee boxes and fairways were pristine. The carts were smooth, but no GPS. The course is an interesting and challenging layout. Bunkers were wet (storms a few days ago). Cart paths were smooth and maintenance looked like they were working to improve them.
A Fun Track
We had just gone through a long spell of hot and dry weather. You would not know it by this courses condition. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in excellent condition. There is water, elevation changes and an interesting layout. We will return.
Best course in metro Detroit
This is the best public course in metro Detroit for the money. Some other courses try to charge $80+ when they are nowhere near Lyon Oaks. They charge $70 on weekend mornings. In my opinion they could charge $100. Beautifully manicured and taken care of. Keep it up Lyon Oaks staff!!
I'll be back!
Thoroughly enjoyable round, would have preferred to play a bit faster, but we still played in just under 4 hours (had we been able to pass the group in front of us, I'm sure we could have finished in less than 3:30).
It was a bit windy when we teed off (2:20) with temps in the low 50's and despite all the rain received earlier in the week, the course was in great shape, the wind subsided and the weather was more than tolerable)
The greens were fantastic. Generally a positive experience all around. We played from the blue tees and that made the course ideal for the skill level for those in our foursome.
The little course pamphlet provided helped a great deal especially on the several holes where your tee shot had to carry over a hazard.
A bit wider than many of the Arthur Hills courses I've played (I'm not complaining). I will definitely be back to play.
Terrible staff and course is awful
The course at Lyon oaks looks great through pictures but that’s only on certain parts. The course is beat down and seems like there’s almost no maintenance. The staff was rude to us and held us up in the pro shop. The outside workers also stopped us and accused us of not paying and calling for a tee time. Worst course in Oakland county
Good layout
Good Author Hills layout. Most fairways have room with only a few tight holes. Usually in great shape
Good course
For a senior, the course is a good deal. Tough course, challenging and normally in good shape. The course requires accuracy and position. I play this course every chance I get.
Surprisingly nice muni
The conditions were great, very friendly staff and the course routing offered a lot of fun and interesting holes.
Worst golfing experience ever !
Got harassed so bad for slow play and told to skip a hole ! We actually had enough and quit after 15 holes ! Never ever happened before in my 50 years of playing golf! We do not play slow the course is tough and was Cart Path only ! The group behind us was a full hole behind ! The final straw was when a 19 yr old from the clubhouse threatened a physical confrontation with my friend a 67 yr old ! I paid $67 for this disastrous round! Avoid this course like the plague!
Nature everywhere
Layout is fantastic. Great Arthur Hills design. Conditions are horrible. Greens have patches everywhere. Course is not well maintained. But the views and natural surroundings are well worth the experience. The course is challanging for all levels.
Good day on the course, we played poorly
Course was in great shap of July, weather was hot but a little breeze made it a very good day. Started/ Ranger were very friendly and didn't have much interaction with htem that day. Would and will play again. Rool up sandwitches a little on thepricey side, staff at bar was SOSO.
lyon oaks
excellent course i will go back again & again (can not wait to go back). i injoyed myself alot.
Great views and fast greens!!!
Great fall weather for such a beautiful course! Great layout with fast greens. I was surprised just smooth and fast the greens were this late into the year. Would play this course every day if it was not 2 hours away. Definitely worth the drive!! Friendly starter and pace of play was 2 hr. and 30 min.
Some slight elevation changes mixed with a few blind shots. Tough layout with forced carries. Must hit to the correct side of the fairway to get home in two on the par 4's. Well mixed long and short par 4's.
Book a tee time it’s worth it!!
Nice Course. Good greens. Layout is Average except for back 9.
Good course. Front nine not as interesting layout. Back 9 is pretty cool. Greens rolled nice and pretty quick. Would NOT pay $40 to play this course. Rattle Run on east side is better. Not a Shepard's Hollow but still a nice course. Would like to play in summer time to get different feel.
Fall Golf.
Perfect fall golf. Leaves were maintained pretty well on course. Great golf course to play at anytime...
Good for fall golf
Challenging layout with many sets of tees to choose from.
Are the courses in Michigan in good shape in mid-April after a cold harsh winter. It was snowing and 20 degrees just before April 16, surprised the course was open.
