Heron Lakes makes for a fine weekend when you're looking to combine hacker-friendly golf with post-round horse race wagering. Located across the highway from the Sam Houston Racepark, Heron Lakes serves up 18 holes of relatively easy golf where length isn't required to score well.
Getting there : The course is located 5 minutes from Willowbrook Mall and just across the tollway from the Sam Houston Racepark.

They finally put this course out of its misery a few years bac
Not impressed
This was my first time to play here. The greens were in decent shape but the fairways and rough were not. Hit many shots that should have been easily located but could not find the ball because of the thick overgrowth. It is a short course and great for working with your irons.
Grass
I would be just off the fairway and lose my ball or spend 10 mins looking for it. Lost 4-5 balls like that in one round. Grass was pretty awful
Dangerous
A lot of Crossed holes. Very inexperienced players all the time. We were put in multiple situations where our cart was hit, and my head almost hit by a errant shot on a green. stacked tee times lead to a 5 hour round on a course shorter than an executive length.
Pretty Good
This is a fun little course. I wish it was a little bit longer off the tee box and a par-72 but it's still very fun. The only other issue I have is there is no driving range to warm up. Other than that I've got no complaints.

Course wasn't well maintained. The 'rough' could easily be considered the 'brush' as the the grass was too high to be called the 'rough'. There were no on-course amenities (cart girls). The greens were fast (which is okay because i'm always open to a challenge). The main reason I am giving it 3 stars is due to the un-maintained course. Other than that and the lack of cart-girls it was a great course. Especially for the value for money.
Challenging course
The greens didn't look great, but they still rolled well. The fairways are narrow, and some holes require you to shape your tee shot. It may be a short course but I love it!
One great golf course
Sure narrow fairways couple bald spots on a few greens but overall a tough unforgiving course that will make you respect this course,The Staff is friendly helpful an compassionate to all of your golfing needs ,Every hole is challenging an at times unforgiving whether you want to use your driver or your favorite irons ,Sure on a few holes the grass is high an there are some greens that need TLC but not every course is perfect an for the price this course is absolutely great ,
Going downhill
The property is for sale. Seems like they have cut back on maintenance. Greens are nice in most courses around Houston. Not so at Heron Lakes.
I expected more
I have played this course over the years but the fairways are in terrible shape and the greens are not much better. I played here today because it appeared to not have been too busy, now I understand why.
Poor Green Quality
The quality of the greens was very poor. There were many greens with little grass, many weeds and bare dirt patches.
