Extremely Difficult and Absolutely Beautiful
Skytop Mountain is one of the most difficult courses I have ever had the pleasure of playing and it was thoroughly enjoyable.
The test at Skytop Mountain begins with landing your tee shot on a part of sloping fairways that will hold your ball before it finds an edge because when it does find that edge, it's over...literally. I took 6 penalty strokes on my way to shooting 103! (I'm currently a 15 handicapper and foolishly chose to play from the blue tees at close to 6,500 yards with a 72.7/141 slope rating)
Once on the fairway, the test continues. I don't believe I have ever played so many shots with the ball either significantly above or below my feet. If your aren't comfortable with these shots, it can be a real struggle. This is part of the game. Embrace it.
On approach the greens are firm and tended to fall off sharply around the perimeter and toward heavily wooded areas with so much ground cover that even if you do find your ball, it will most likely be unplayable.
Landing short and below the pin is a must. Today, it was firm, lightning fast, and rolling true...if you can find the line. The breaks can be brutally subtle on one hole and vast and sweeping on the next. It seems that only regular experience here can provide you with all of the information you will need to master these mountainside greens.
Through all the difficulty, the scenery (especially on the back nine) is so breathtaking that you won't even mind that last 3 putt. Every now and then you just have to stop and take it all in. Gaze across the valley and maybe you'll see some wildlife as we did with a deer crossing behind one of the par 4 greens.
All staff encountered were courteous and helpful and you can feel that they know they have a unique gem on their hands.
It would be great if Skytop had a relaxing and fully operational cubhouse and menu, but this isn't the first or last spectacular course that that is all about the golf and little about the amenities. At the price, this was a golf experience that is tough to beat.
Challenging course
Challenging but beautiful course. Friendly staff. Leagues for men and women, Par 3 tournaments, 19 man challenge and you must try Night Golf at least once. A gem hidden in the mountains of Central PA.
Hidden Gem in Central PA
This course is a hidden gem in Central PA. Beautiful views, different elevations, impeccable maintenance and a very good value. Play it, you won’t be disappointed.
Course has came a long way in the past few years
Course is always in excellent condition ,beautiful views and great staff only thing I don't like is it would be nicer to have a bigger clubhouse and pro shop
Challenging course
Skytop s a challenging course with narrow fairways and beautiful mountain side views. The course is well-maintained with a friendly staff. It requires accuracy off the tee and provides many challenges for your remaining shots.
unbelievably scenic
not a long course, but you have to be extremely accurate. everyone should golf here at least once.
Enjoy it more and more
I've been playing Skytop over the past 3+ years, and with each round played I enjoy it more and more. The course is a fun challenge for all golfers at any level. Pace of play is rarely an issue. And the views are fantastic. Overall I highly recommend anyone looking for a great round of golf to check it out! Enjoy! and hit 'em straight (cause you'll get lost just off the fairway).
Good Golf
Excellently maintained course, compares very favorably with the famous Robert Trent Jones courses throughout Alabama
Love the views, course layout, and nature.
Great place to golf in Centre County! Quite and peaceful place to enjoy beautiful views and nature. Great rates, friendly staff, and great course conditions. Love golfing here and always my preferred choice.
Favorite Course in State College Area
One of my favorite places to golf in the State College area. The last time out it was about 100 degrees outside and it had been of the previous week as well but the greens were still in amazing shape. Course is beautiful and you have some great views of the small towns occassionally. The course can be a little tricky on some holes but still a great 18! I play the course at least 5-6 times in the summer and for an occasional golfer it's a lot!
The final 5 star goes to the use of golf boards! I rented it and it was a blast, its a lot of work because you are using your weight to make turns so it can get a little tiring but honestly it's such a different way of getting around and its a blast.
Simply an amazing course!
Skytop is by far my favorite course in the area. They provide a great value and an exceptionally maintained and beautiful course. I’ve been golfing here for two years and couldn’t find a single complaint about the course, staff, pace of play, or value they provide. I would recommend anyone in the area to play at Skytop. It’s great!
Hidden gem in PA
Skytop is a great public course, well maintained, kind staff and their youth golf camp is excellent for son/daughter to learn the game
Fantastic Mountain Course!
I've traveled all over the country and Skytop Mountain is up there with some of the most memorable courses I've played The course runs back and forth across a ridge in Central PA. As a result you'll never have a level lie but the view and hole layout will most certainly be spectacular. For the most part the course is extremely playable. There were a 2-3 gimmicky holes that could use some re-doing. 18 comes to mind. It's a an elevated tee to a dogleg left fairway. The problem is the fairway slopes severely to the right. There's a couple of other holes that would benefit from a little tree clearing but that's a bit of nitpicking.
The course is not easy! Proper selection off the tee is crucial to keep the ball in play. The lack of level lies also means you'll be shaping the ball into the green on nearly every hole.
If you're in the area I HIGHLY recommend checking out this course!! IMO, it's FAR more memorable than Toftrees and in better shape imo.
Excellent course
This course is excellent. Beautiful views and great layout. Challenging but rewards good shots. The friendliest staff you could meet. If in the state college area I’d recommend playing here
Skytop Mountain Review
A fantastic and unique course in the mountains. Definitely has great value to it. I recommend it to anyone who is up for a nice challenge and wants to have some fun.
This is Golfing Paradise
The drive down the winding hill to the clubhouse gives you a preview of this wonderful golf course, it is quite spectacular.
I have now played the course many times and I love that every hole is a new challenge, conditions are pristine and the way they have blended the course into the mountainside is fantastic.
The staff could also not be friendlier, I also highly recommend Jeremy, the Club Pro for golf
lessons if your looking to improve your game.
I only get to play this course 2 weeks a year as I am visiting from FL, I have played all the area golf courses and there is nothing that comes close to this golf course, its a Central PA Gem!
Excellent layout
Kudos to the groundkeepers! I often play the courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and I must say that Skytop Mountain Course is on a par with them. Played 7 rounds in Central Pa the last week of June 17 and Skytop Mountain course was head and shoulders above the other six courses.
For February was great
First time golfing in February at Skytop Mountain Golf Course. the course was in great shape and greens were rolled and balls rolled true. There was a large number of golfers taking in warm weather and Skytop Being open. I enjoyed the course and people I meet. Each year the Grounds Crew are making changes and improvements and this past winter was no different. Playing this course is always a great experience.
Beautiful, and you'll get EXERCISE.
This course is built on side of a mountain. I dare you to find a more friendly staff, great price, PERECT GREENS, and scenic holes. Most of all, even in a cart, you will get plenty of exercise, and FINDOTS OF BALLS, ehile losing yours. Heck, an even trade is fine with me. Recommend playing white tees as even Great Players will have difficulty from rhere, but oh what fun. Shot a 96 playing by THE OFFICIAL RULES OF GOLF, and feel great about this score. Try it, you'll be glad as I believe this will be a course in great demand once others discover it's wonder.
Great Place to Golf
I am brand new to golfing. I took lessons with Skytop's golf instructor, Jeremy Crawford, and I couldn't be happier. He gave me a great foundation to take my skills to the next level.
The staff is always friendly and courteous. The clubhouse is small, but I think the course is above average and has great views of the valley. The grass has been well kept. It could be soggy at times, but otherwise I have no complaints.
Thanks for reading. -Rich
