Spanish Oaks is part of a huge master-planned community located in the scenic Hill Country along Texas 71 outside of Austin in Bee Caves. Membership in this private club will be limited to 350. Little Barton Creek rolls through the layout, which is cut by an impressive array of cliffs and rocky terrain. There is an unmistakable natural feel to the layout, and you’ll definitely experience something special if you have the privilege of playing this course.

Since its opening in October 2001, accolades have come easy for this Booby Weed-designed track. In fact, Golf Digest labeled the facility as the “Best New Private Course in America” so it’s not surprising that others now consider it one of the top ten in all of Texas.

Note that first-timers will greatly benefit from the club’s outstanding caddie program, and the design is very walker-friendly, with short distances between each hole.

Getting there : Located west of town on Texas 71 in the town of Bee Caves.

Fantastic Experience

Spanish Oaks certainly lived up to the hype of being one of the best golf clubs in Texas. The greens are smooth and incredibly quick. The course is demanding off the tee with great views from almost every tee box of the surrounding Texas landscape. Overall one of the best facilities and tougher golf courses I’ve played. Conditioning, service, amenities including ProV practice balls, variety of holes and an overall fantastic golf experience makes Spanish Oaks in the top tier of golf clubs for all of the US.

Holds its own among Austin's top private clubs

Finally had a chance to play this private club just west of Austin in Bee Cave and was really impressed with the layout. There is a lot of movement to the ground out here but the flow feels very natural and the ball moves around on the ground neatly.

The par 5s are excellent - though three played into the wind - and the par 3s are cool too. There are also a couple short par 4s and a few blind tee shots. There is certainly some local knowledge to be had out here which makes it a layout geared towards members who can learn the nuances.

I think the design by Bobby Weed actually compares favorably to Fazio's Escondido out west. The difference between these two high-end clubs is Escondido's clubhouse is much bigger and there are lake and pool amenities, while Spanish Oaks' is smaller and golf-focused.

The amenities go above and beyond here and we had a tremendous forecaddie with a serious nose for finding balls and was great at giving advice. They have walking caddies here as well.

Really Special Place

Had a chance to play with a couple friends that know a member this past weekend. A very special place that is the epitome of personalized service. The staff and the restaurant are second to none and I'd go out of my way to eat here again even if I wasn't playing.

The course is hidden inside a very exclusive neighborhood that employs 24/7 guards for security. The entire drive into the club signals "this is an exclusive place". We were immediately met by valet service - where our bags were taken - and we were escorted to the clubhouse and then to the practice area. The staff could not have been kinder - knew each of our names - and delivered our drinks directly to the practice area where we were warming up.

The course does not seem challenging upon first glance (it plays less than 7,000 yards). But looks are deceiving and this course challenges you to think thru every shot - every time. Rolling fairways can leave you with challenging lies that punish poor execution and planning. The greens were immaculate and some of the finest I've played in Texas. EXTREMELY fast. Speed control is a must if you ever get a chance to play a round here.

I mentioned that the course sits within a very (VERY) nice neighborhood with homes that carry price tags in the tens of millions. However, you hardly notice the homes on the hills as we were stuck by the beauty of the surrounding terrain. Abundant wildlife, turtles, and deer were ever-present.

I would highly recommend playing here if ever afforded the chance. Fingers crossed I get to come back someday, as this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I won't forget.

If you have the chance, don't pass it up!

As soon as you drive on to the property and valet greets you at the bag drop, you will instantly realize...this place is special. Enjoyed every moment, the food, the golf, and the people...hope to be back soon.
