ShadowGlen Golf Club

About
Located just 15 minutes northeast of downtown Austin, ShadowGlen Golf Course is considered by locals to be one of the area's hidden gems. At 7,174 yards from the back tees, it is a long, tough course that will test even the most seasoned players. Some consider it to be the most difficult public golf course in Texas. The layout has a links design that is mostly flat but there are a few hilly spots that can cause some trouble, especially the holes that were designed with steep drops. The narrow fairways require accuracy and the well manicured greens play fast and are often bordered by strategically placed bunkers or contoured mounding. There are also water hazards coming into play throughout, including the wandering creek that cuts across the golf course.

Holes too tricky unless you are a mountain goat!
4 holes on side of canyons just kill a solid round and it is very depressing
I will avoid course for better options.
Steer clear for now
Greens are in awful condition, not at all worth the price they are currently charging. Crazy paying 90$ to put on some Blackhawk grade greens.
Steer Clear Until They Do Work On Course
Never have I felt like my money was stolen but to charge even $80 for a course that greens haven’t been tended to, fringe is over grown, fairway is basically the rough. This isn’t just a waste of money it’s a waste of your life as the course is so bad rounds take 5 hours because even if you hit well it’s still lost in the fairway on majority of holes.
If you stop playing they will lose money and will have to address the course.
overall good experience. the greens were not up to par but they gave me a reduced rate and a free bucket of balls because in their words "greens are not up to our expectations"..... everything else was great. Good course layout with tough holes combined with risk reward shots.
Greens are worst in Austin
I’ve been playing here for many many years, I even remember when they lost the greens back in like 2010 or so. And right now the greens are absolutely despicable. They should be basically giving away rounds of golf right now with as bad as these greens are. Clearly, you can tell that they are trying to fix them, but these are the worst greens I’ve seen in my entire 25 years of playing golf. Avoid at all cost right now until they get these greens repaired.
Greens in bad shape
I really like the course but the greens are currently in rough shape. Other courses in the area have lots of grass on the greens. I was told by the shop that they don’t over seed in the winter and the weather has not been good yet for the type of grass on the greens and it will take a couple weeks of good weather to get them grown in.
Long time lover of Shadow, not happy with the greens
I love this course. Difficult, narrow, challenging. When it’s in good condition it’s one of the better public courses in greater Austin. The greens, however, were in the worst shape I’ve ever seen. Honestly really disappointed. Couldn’t read them reasonably with the dirt patches and clover, bumps of foreign grass could take your ball offline on any given hole. Pace of play was good but they had one too many Marshalls on course (their words not mine) that just was a bit uncomfortable considering we finished the round in 4 hours flat.
4 star layout, 2 star condition
I would love to play tho course in good shape. But the greens are really bumpy, with some sort of weed or invasive grass species growing sporadically. The fairways were in very mediocre condition too. Still had fun, but I wouldn’t go back at the prices they are charging, unless I saw reviews indicating an improvement in conditions.
Typical winter conditions
Played 10 am on a Friday morning. Pace of play was great. We didn’t wait to hit a single shot. Greens were OK for winter conditions, They rolled pretty well, but were a bit too bumpy. The fairways were OK in some spots, but really bad in other spots. The bunkers that weren’t full of water were in great shape. It was cartpath only for the first nine so the course was a bit mushy. If I would’ve paid $45 for the round , it would’ve felt like a decent value, but we got the best deal we could on GolfNow and it was $75 each plus fees. We saw the cart girl several times and she was very nice (and gorgeous) and had a decent selection. The fajita taco I had at the turn was surprisingly good. I like the challenge of this course layout but the wind and the rough conditions made it a bit challenging for this round. Six handicap shot 85 from the blues.
Fun course
Took over 5.5 hours due to slow play in front of us. Marshall tried to speed them up.
Great and Intricate Holes - Not worth the price
Staff was great. Check-In was simple. My second was late, and we got paired up with another pair for the front 9. They lead him off to Hole 2 after we teed off. Again, the staff is AWESOME! From manager to cart girl. I will say the grounds aren’t as clean as they should be, lot of people out on the course, specifically pairs of 4 and a group that turned in to 8 before the last hole. We got to 18, but there was so much traffic we just called it early and went to the clubhouse. That was the only bummer. Otherwise, my friend and I had a great time, but for $110 a person close to a 1:00p tee time, wasn’t as sound of investment as we thought. Still would recommend and golf here again, just maybe not a full 18.
Beautiful course
Really enjoyed how stunning this course is. Very scenic. The conditions were pretty bad but I think there’s a water issue. I’d definitely play again just for the views
Fun course, friendly staff, 5 hour round
We were warned that the greens were being worked on so we expected that. We were not warned that there were 100 high schoolers doing a practice round for a tournament on Monday. Pace of play was very slow, 5 hours total and we seemed to be the only adults in any group 4 ahead or behind us. The course layout was fun and I would consider trying it again, but it would have been nice to know that we would be backed up 2 groups on every tee box.
Do not play this course now.
For $65, it’s not worth it. The tee boxes have not been mowed and are worse than hitting out of the rough. The greens are mainly sand. The fairways are a mix of some grass, and lots of dirt and junk. The conditions of this course are just terrible. Very sad to see what this course has become.
Winter
Well, it’s hard to give a course a true view during the winter, this course has potential. The greens were a little rough. There were aerating on some a lot of maintenance being done. The back nine is kind of an adventure. Lots of significant hills. Be ready to do some climbing if you’re spraying the ball at all. It will be interesting to play this course in season to see how the conditions might affect the play. For the money I would say it’s an OK course to play, would I highly recommend, no.
We appreciate your review. We are working hard to get our greens back to their normal conditions. They were hit with some winter kill during the freezes and the cool spring temps have not helped the Bermuda grass. We expect a 3-4 week recovery on our greens.
