Hope it's true!
So improved since playing 6 weeks ago. Email that enticed my wife and I to go mentioned Mr. Robbins returning to manage the course. We could see his hand print immediately. Nicely mowed, sand traps manicured. It appears that ownership is committed to restoring this former gem. Thanks Mr. Hirsch. Glad that Rod and crew are back. We look forward to coming back next year. It will be worth it if the effort so far gets carried over to next season. "Build it and they will come".
Disappointed
Tees and fairways are crabgrass. Many fringes just burnt up. Rough was not mowed in who knows how long. Appears that the only money invested is put in the greens, and they are average. Have played here since it opened-always looked forward to playing the challenging track. Sad to see such a neat place having gone so far downhill. The layout is phenomenal. Going to take a lot of money to get this place where it belongs. Just a shame.
This course has long, rolling fairways
Long fairways, rolling hills, very challenging from the Blue and White tees. Somewhat easier from the red and yellow tees. Some great views from the course hills of the surrounding countryside. Large greens to shoot for. Some very thick rough around some fairways so bring extra golf balls.
Great layout. Great value.
Very much worth the drive from any Central IL location. If you are driving down from Chicago to play Weaver Ridge, Coyote Creek, or The Den you should put this lost gem on your playlist while in the area. A few places a bit rough but the layout and challenge is worth this minor drawback. Unique and excellent hole designs unlike what is typically seen in this part of the USA. My hot dog was warm and beer was cold. Don't be shy.........give Crane Creek a try!
Crane Creek
Really like this course. Play here a few times a year. It is in a rural area, but has been well worth the driver to get there. you have to be long and accurate to play the bad two sets of tees, but can move up a set of tees to fit your current game.
Unfortunately, it is experiencing difficulty, as the fairways are beginning to brown out. Most of the greens have spots that have died. Not sure if the dry weather/lack of rain is the cause..
Hoping the grounds crew get the course in better shape. Had been planning to return a couple of weeks.
This course is long.
Hard to find any balls that did not land in the fairway. Most of the gravel on the cart paths was washed away, so the cart paths had valleys in them and were very rough. It took 4 and a half hours for the 4 of us to finish our round, most of that time was spend looking for our balls in the high rough.
Loss of Lustre
Always have loved this course. A shoestring budget on a course like this is a shame. I can't see it surviving past this year. My wife and I have played here since 1999 . Unless we hear of better watering and grass cutting maintenance the drive to this former gem won't be worth it. So sorry Mr. Hirsh. Tough times.
In the Sticks
This was the first chapter of a Navy golf reunion weekend in the Peoria area. Although this is one of our local shipmate's favorites, the layout, especially all the blind shots, are not my forte. I think if I played Crane Creek again, I might be more comfortable, but many of the holes made me feel very claustrophobic. Even with local knowledge, I think some trouble is unavoidable due to the hilly terrain, and very thick rough. The greens were outstanding and very well maintained, but I can tell times are tight. The cart paths, rogue foliage, length of the rough, and some other smaller points could use more attention. I must give a lot of credit to the course, though. For a course in such a remote location, it is remarkable that it is in as good of condition as it is. However, I don't know how it can be sustained. There was not much play on this particular day, which was good for us since my pals and me were socializing plenty, but not good for the operation. I wish Crane Creek luck, but if I were a local, I don't know if I would venture all the way to Kilbourne that often. I would play the course again, but I don't know if I could recommend it to a friend without risking being beaten up afterwards.
Great value
Great course for a short road trip from Peoria or Springfield Illinois. Course is in the middle of rural Mason County and is known as a great value. We found the conditions to be about average. Greens were in decent shape, most fairways were OK, but there are a few bare spots, but nothing to discourage me from coming back. Bunkers need maintenance as most of them had little or no sand.
The course meanders through hills and woods and offers some great views. Back nine is much more difficult. Golfers need to be able to keep it in the fairways to have scoring opportunity. Errant drives will be penalized.
Cart paths were a little rough, but not enough to discourage a return visit. Would not recommend for walkers as there is too much distance between many greens and tee boxes.
Always a great value and worth the drive.
Cart paths need repairs!
A great course, great challenge, with many elevation changes. Hit 'em long and hit 'em straight! Two small complaints: please add more distance markers, and please add some water stations or occasionally run a cart around selling drinks. Currently, due to all the rain, the carts paths are in real need of repairs all over the course. Many have huge, gaping holes and areas that are almost completely washed out. When the rains stop (eventually?) we hope these repairs will be a high priority for this otherwise excellent course.
Nice layout, in the boonies
Haven't played here for a couple years, last time it wasn't in the greatest shape. However, course conditions now are very good. Really enjoy the layout. Staff has always been extremely friendly. Great value, just a long haul to get there.
Crane Creek - worth the drive!
It's not often ownership writes a review. I'm the chairman of the company which owns Crane Creek. With that said, don't miss the opportunity to play Crane Creek. Tee times are readily available & green fees include a cart & range from $26 - $35. Tees, fairways & greens are in excellent condition. The terrain is rolling & pretty. Denis, the manager will often give your 4some a pay 3 play 4 rate on your next time out. Denis is always doing specials so please seek him out. Have a ball at the Creek...it's worth the drive!
Beautiful Day for 18
The weather was perfect and the crowd was small. Our tee time was for 11:00 but we were early as usual, and were allowed to go ahead and start 30 minutes early. The fairways were in terrific condition and the greens were in good condition. The front nine was an enjoyable pleasure and the back nine was difficult, as always. We had a great round with no difficulties!
Value
At $26 possibly the best value in the state which included a gas cart. Beautiful rolling terrain, the greens seemed to stimp out at 9 1/2 - 10. Tees, fairways and greens in as good condition as many private clubs. Fun-loving staff...don't miss the Creek!
