Black Bull Golf Course

About
Originally opened as a nine-hole course in 1971, Black Bull Golf Resort now offers a total of 27 holes. There is an 18-hole course as well as a nine-hole executive course. Black Bull is conveniently situated only an hour from Edmonton near Pigeon Lake, one of Central Alberta's most popular vacation destinations. It is just far enough from the city to feel like a getaway, a feeling that is enhanced even further by the beautiful mature forests that enclose the golf course. The championship course is challenging enough for avid golfers but it's not overly punishing. The layout features plenty of strategically placed bunkers as well as elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. In addition to the championship and executive courses, there is also a driving range lined with mature trees, mimicking the feel of the golf course.

Narrow Fairways
Course was in relatively good condition although a few of the greens still require some sunshine. Lots of mosquitoes. Fairways again are very good or bad. Most of the greens seem to be very sloped and are were very inconsistent in speed. Green fees do not include driving range. I also noted there is a total lack of ball washers which for the price should be on every cart. Some of the traps also lacked sand.
Excellent Course, Great Shape, Challenging
Beautiful layout, excellent condition. Tough setup with long rough and challenging pins most times. Purchased a groupon to play here and have gone back since. It's an excellent course.
You have to Play this Course!!
Course is in great shape. Greens Fast, rolled & better than most. Be Smart & play from "Right Tees" or Course will beat & eat you up.
Just a Great Course to Play!!
Great Course
played here 4 times this year and love it !! Cant wait to play it in 2014
This course is long and challenging.
We are (2 some) were very disappointed the the 4 some in front of us would'nt let us play through, had to wait for 5 - 10 mins for them on just about every holes.
Bad condition
I was going there for a challenge as this course is very hard and I played it in the past. However, this is the worst shape I have ever seen this course in! The greens were burnt, some seemed to be punched and some were not. The fairways had a lot of deadpan, so much that we played winter rules. Tee boxes are like concrete. The course plays tough enough under normal conditions but this was stupid, it will take me a long time to play here again.
Lovely course
We used last minute tee time with golf cart and got a great deal. The lady in the pro shop was not very friendly though as we were running late and apologized .. But got a cold reception. Turned out we were pretty much the only ones on the golf course, no one in from, no one behind. So not sure why she reacted that way? Nice course though, just don't expect a warm reception.
firm, fast greens. Parkland course, has some length. Choose the proper tees.
The tee shot on the first tee gets your attention. In general, course requires an accurate tee shot with woods and some water a challenge. The greens are large, firm and fast. The finishing hole has requires two accurate shots to have a birdie chance.
A very good walking course.
Black Bull is a great place to get away from the noise and hustle.
Pretty good condition overall. The tee boxes need work, some are fairly worn out.
Greens are in good condition, very receptive to all shots, and putt true. A little on the slow side, however I think that is the trade off that makes them receptive.
It looks like there is a brush cleaning program started on many of the heavily tree lined fairways. This will certainly make for more enjoyable rounds for a wider range of golfers due to the relatively tight holes on about half the course.
A hidden, challenging gem
Black Bull is a wonderful and fair test of golfing skills for golfers at all levels. The course has been artfully sculpted out of the trees in the quiet and picturesque area surrounding Pigeon Lake. There are a few rather bland and straightforward holes on the course, although they are more than compensated for by the rest of the holes that present golfers with a unique and beautifully challenging golf experience. I couldn't say the course was pristine, for some of the tee boxes were in need of work. However, the greens and fairways are lush, very well maintained, and the turf on the entire course is wonderfully soft and dense.
Great course to play for all handicaps.
Had played this course years ago and forgotten how great it is.They offer 4 tee locations so it accomidates all handicaps. Also the conditions were great, and they have some holes that make you think not just grip it and rip it. I will definitely be back before the seasons over.
Price was right
Paid really good price from Golfnow for two golfers and cart. Course was in very good shape with many challenging holes.
Not for the faint of heart
This is a difficult track with very narrow fairways and trouble around most corners. Long hitter may want to leave their drivers
in the bag. Local knowledge or a good GPS would be an asset. The greens were fast and tricky and well maintained. There was no marshal on course and while our round was not unduly slow it did not move at a steady pace as the threesome ahead lagged quite far behind the group ahead.
Challenging course
This course offers a bit of everything, some narrow fairways, water and sand hazards. Excellent shape! Challenging greens.
Great value for the cost
Course is very challenging playing 6,400 yds from the white, 6,900 form the blues and 7,300 from the tips. Tight fairways that are tree lined and water comes in play on 11 holes. The course condition is very good with the greens in excellent shape. The layout is very good using the natural terrain of hills and mounding. This is quite a picturesque course and is well worth the visit. Very good value for the money. We play it a couple of time a year as we golf all over Alberta and play many courses each year.
Excellent Condition!
This course is one of the best kept secrets in Alberta. If you are a low handicap player, play the back tees to make it a great test!
I would strongly recommend this course for any visitors to the area.
This couse is very tight!
Use caution this course can bite you! It has very suttle greens and you must be carefull!
But, was the foursome keeping up to the group in front of them? If so, no point in letting anyone play through. Just my humble opinion.
