Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018 and transformed into Disc Golf Course.
Kayak Point Golf Club is one of Washington's most popular courses. It was named one of the "Top 50 Public Courses to Play" by Golf Digest, and the Seattle Times called it a "must play" course. Located in Stanwood, Kayak Point is less than an hour north of Seattle. The layout was carefully carved from an old growth forest of firs and cedars. You'll enjoy scenic views of the Olympic Mountains on several holes. The layout will test you with sloping fairways and large, immaculately manicured greens. There are more than 30 greenside bunkers at Kayak Point, but water comes into play on only two holes. The spacious golf course doesn't have any parallel fairways and it's not short on length at over 6,700 yards from the back tees.

course was shutting down
Not as good as in the past they closing up shop and leaving
Several holes had soggy edges on the fairways. No one from the staff came around during the round to check the pace of play.
A classic is dying/closing
The County has run this course down hill for the last ten years, perhaps longer. On October 21st the course is closed until an new management company can be found to replace Access Golf. As noted in the tile, the course has been going down for a decade. A real shame as the course was a gem many years ago. Today, the greens remain the best part of the playing experience, the tee boxes are okay but the fairways are very hit and miss. Grass is thin to dirt with odd depressions from varmint burrowing through out the 18 hole layout. The pro shop looked like a BK sale in a small town, almost ghostly. The clubhouse was locked when we finished our round at 6 PM. No food, no beer and no bathrooms on a Sunday afternoon. I really hope the COunty comes up with a partner that has a vision for this great layout to bring it back to some shape of it's former glory. Within an hours drive of Seattle, the course would be played if it were in decent shape.
Good Layout
I liked the course but hadn't played there in 10 years. The greens were in good shape but the fairways were not as green and well kept as I remembered. Pace of Play was great as we teed off on the backside first as 5 foursomes in a mini tournament were teeing off on the front. Made the round quicker and more enjoyable. Disappointing thing was reading the memo on the door when we finished (didn't read it before we played) saying that management was done as of October 21st and status of the course was unknown. So unless someone takes over, Kayak will close. If it does, I'm glad I played it one last time. That may be why it wasn't in as good of shape as before..
Conditions need attention
First round here in 2 years. I always love playing this course & have enjoyed it occasionally for over 30 years. Was ranked in a top 100 list in the past, but is really slipping in fairway, bunker & tee box conditioning. Greens are still awesome, although slowest I can remember. What I noticed this time was how little grass and how many mid-fairway weedy lies I hit from, the shallow sand in the 2 bunkers I found, and the several re-routes of the cart path. Still an amazing, quiet track through forest & marshes. I hope management understands they've got something special here & gets it back on track.
Bad fairways
I usually play here a few times a year I live near by. The greens are good but the fairways are more like a cow pasture very rough, weeds, clumps of grass , potholes and bumps you can hit the middle of the fairway and bounce in any direction. The bunkers are hard no sand more like gravel. At this time it's a $20.course with cart not $45.
Rough condition
Course lacking water. Dry and spotty grass with hard pan around greens. Greens ok. Pace was ok
Where is the golf course maintenance
I'm torn, I've always loved the layout and surroundings but my last visit was disappointing. It has been two years since I played Kayak Point. I never have had a problem with course conditions. This time it was very different.
Fairways are barely mowed, rough and bumpy.
Hard to tell when the rough begins. Many long uneven lies. Bare patches thru out. Number 9 bunker is no longer. Looks like a waste area. Most bunkers are very thinly sanded. `Greens are bumpy through out. No ball washers anywhere. No refreshments on course.
Rate is inexpensive and reflects lack of course maintenance.
Need help maintaining the golf course
It was nice pace and we had pretty good outing. The greens are fast and well maintained - that was the only nice thing about the Kayak Point GC. The fairways, tee boxes and overall course conditions are below average. The Kayak Point GC once had been rated the beat and hardest in the past but not anymore. DK
Neglected
The bones of a great golf course are still there, although if you didn't see it in the glory days, you would not believe it once was a beautiful, well maintained, challenging and fun course.
First let me say the staff was great, very attentive and accommodating on a busy Thursday. The price was excellent, $41 including cart.
The golf course looks (and is) in disappointingly bad shape. The grounds around the clubhouse, tee boxes, driving range etc are completely overgrown and uninviting.
The fairways are extremely uneven, leading to unfair bounces and bumpy cart rides.
The greens are very well maintained, though many traps are overgrown with grass and weeds (particularly the 9th and 12th holes).
Hopefully more money will be invested in bringing the course back. I would have been happy to pay more for a better maintained track.
It’s Time to Enjoy Kayak Point
Kayak has become a little ragged around the edges, but the course retains its awesome setting and layout. It drys up later in the summer, but it is great condition now.
Thanks for your comment we have been working hard on winter projects to include automated fairways and growing fairways a bit higher (1/4 of an inch higher) to keep the place greener this summer.
Disapointment
As a fellow res ponder mentioned the fairways were not cut, the fairways were so bumpy it was hard on your back. Moving from this area so wanted to play 1 last time but what a disapointment
I am truly sorry you were disappointed in your day at Kayak please reach out to me personally at 360-652-9676 extension 3.
No cut fairways, no water, not worth the money
First off, I want to say the layout of the course is a lot of fun. A lot of potential on certain holes.
Now with that said, I can't say this any other way. There are no fairways. It looks like they haven't mowed anything in weeks if not months. Greens are rock hard. Can't hold a wedge from 75. Greens rolled okay on but were concrete and the cups haven't changed locations in weeks as well.
The tees looked like they weren't mowed in weeks either, just weed whacked. It was very disappointing. I've heard good things from years ago from Kayak, but it sounds like they really let the place go. Probably having to do with new owners, because my playing partner mentioned it looked 180 degrees different then when he was there a few years ago.
Staff was awesome, friendly, helpful. No issue there.
I'm speaking purely on the golf course condition.
The bunkers were filled with huge stones and had zero sand in them. Couldn't even rake cause you would hit clay below the half inch of sand max.
I can safely say that I don't know what could make me go back to Kayak. Unless there is a ownership change. I'm sure there is something behind the lack of water and no mowing of the course other than just laziness. I hope something changes at Kayak because has great potential, but a complete let down.
I am sorry you had a bad experience at Kayak Point Golf Course. Please reach out to me via email at Steve.stensland@golfkayak.com . I would love to discuss your day personally and see if we can welcome you back to Kayak. Steve
Dont watse your time until they mow or water

Always Disappointing
Tried it again for the new year on a perfect day - entirely disappointed as usual. I really want to see this course come back to some version of its former glory but its just not going to happen. Hats off to the new keepers for at least mowing it a bit this time and the greens were decent. However - the fairways remain entirely unacceptable horse pastures. They are so pitted with holes that you will often lose your drive even when right down the middle due to it bouncing sideways or disappearing into a hole where the grass cant be mowed. Every fairway just needs a total regrade and replant before this course can ever be considered a real golf course again. You can't even drive a cart on the fairways unless you wear a kidney belt!
Last but very important note - they have raised the prices this year, despite the horrible condition of the fairways. As the new price point, virtually any city course is a better option and most Oki courses can be played for the same rate so don't waste your time and money traveling to Stanwood just to be disappointed.
Thank you for your comments we started a bunch of winter projects to include reducing the size of some of the bunkers or making them grass bunkers like the ones on 9. Unfortunately we have had some major irrigation issues which I am happy to say are repaired and so we should have things turned around shortly. We have seeded the renovation areas multiple times and due to water issues the seed never took. I promise we are working hard to get back to wonderful.
