Greenway hall

A lot of improvement, not a bad course if you want a quick knock. Only three hours, give it a go.

I’ve played here a few times and the Staff are friendly and helpful. The amenities are very good, probably the best in the area. The course is well maintained. Good value for money.

Delightful

The course was in great condition, as a Greenkeeper I have to take my hat off to the Greenstaff for the standard they’ve achieved with low staff levels and difficult weather conditions.

The staff in the pro shop were friendly and helpful, I’ll definitely be coming back to play again.

After playing in March on the Winter tees and temporary greens, I wasn’t overly excited, but going back now with the course fully open, very impressed.

Fantastic range of holes, green keepers deserve full credit as the course was immaculate.

Slight issue checking in as apparently there is a different booking system than golfnow uses, but after showing the confirmation email it was all resolved.

Will definitely play there again.

Avoid if there’s been any rain

The course is fantastic and a great test for any player, but it’s just way to wet, every shot the ball just plugged into the ground to the point you can’t even find your ball! Great summer course very bad winter course

Greens are never on

Yes we have had awful rain this year. However greenways never has all the greens on.

I used to be a green keeper before my retirement so I am not aiming jibes with no reference point. I moved here two years ago and was hoping to join. However each year the course gets worse and they obviously just care about making money at the range. The pace of play was excellent due to no one wanting to play.

All other course in the area have more greens on. 4 today!

I walked over all the greens, 4 should have been off. The rest on. I'm sure they will put a post out in summer about how good the greens look, that is because the slightest bit of rain and they just say "leave them off" as I presume they don't even inspect them. I only ever see a tree surgeon working on the course. The other two just seem to drive around together.

The fairways are also awful , hole 9 should be closed if they are using the temp. The winter greens are the worst I have ever seen.

I can not justify joining a course that you can only enjoy 4 months a year.

Pleasantly surprised

OK, so you know the score. You take a day off to play a round at your club - and it's closed (again). Not only that but your back up (Cannock Park in my case) is also closed. So, sat in Stafford the only 'accessible' course I could think of was Greenway Hall. As I don't know Stoke on Trent overly well I didn't really have a clue where it was - and I was very nearly put off by the myriad of rather poor reviews across multiple sites. I'm so glad I wasn't. Firstly, credit to the club for the course being open - one of the very few. I did have to rush round a bit as I didn't tee off until 1500 but I was round for 1800 which I was really pleased about given an unfamiliar layout. I think all the tees were temporary and 15 of 18 greens were but all had double sized holes and were closely mown and given the fact all other courses seem to have been closed, it's hardly unreasonable. Also, I have to say, the three greens that were in play looked and felt in amazing condition - and surprisingly fast given the weather. Anyway, bottom line is by my standard (+23) I had an amazing round playing to 13 over - and that was with my score falling away over the last few holes. In fairness, I think the winter layout makes a significant difference as a couple of the tees look like they're set up to drive through trees and have quite an awkward set up, but you can only play what's in front of you and I loved it. Bizarrely for such a strong front nine, I didn't really enjoy the first four holes but I think that was mainly due to all being uphill and somewhat challenging for my standard - but holes five to around 13 are pretty straightforward and as long as you are fairly accurate off the tee, you'll get your reward. I do agree with other contributors that the layout in parts isn't great and there are several holes where you would need to be mindful of stray shots during busy play (not a problem for me this time). Also, parts of the course were unplayable but...see above. A bigger gripe would be the state of some of the winter tees - the inserts on many could do with replacing - and the lack of bins. Overall though, I loved it and plan to go back with a couple of mates in better conditions - if only to prove to them that there is a half decent golfer in me somewhere!

Awful course ruined by the owner

I have been a member for 8 years.

The current owner has squeezed the life out of the course.

The last manager came in with good intentions, however his hands were tied by the owner, who refuses to sell and refuses let people manage.

The course is the worse state I have seen it in, yet recently when the greens have looked good and playable the new management refuses ro put them on, or explain why.

The temporary greens are absolutely unplayable, they are sodden, covered in mud, uncut and in awful places. Whilst the greens are playable and not wet. I was hoping to play today, but again all temps.

So i have the choice of other courses nearby that are more enjoyable and they actually treat members with respect and communicate. It was nice to be able to get a tee in the winter mats and not have to get changed in my car

Apparently the new management are increasing membership fees by 180-300 because we are having a fitting bay and changing rooms.

We were told we were getting these years ago and was why the prices increased last time!

90 percent of the members will not use the fitting bay as us older chaps and other members can not afford the latest equipment. All the bay will do is put money into the owners pockets that never goes on the course.

We have lost 30 plus members already this year, and there will be a lot more in a few months where the price increases brings greenways in line with courses that cost the same but is on the worst temps of all time or closed 5 months of the year.

And lots not forget......its a 17 hole course.

Course has become awful for members

I have been a member for 6 years. I will be leaving this year.

The last few years they have consistently put up the price and said it was due to paying for new changing rooms, or work on the course. We haven't seen any of this. There is not enough green staff and the course is always on temps, literally can play a few months a year. The temps are also , by far the worst temps on any course I have ever played, and I have played lots of courses. I no longer invite friends to greenways as si am embarrassed by it.

A new manager came in several months ago, with good ideas and enthusiasm, however the owner as usual has ensures they are not achievable.

Again a new manager has come in and there is now rumours of a 150-290 membership increase. Apparently they will try to justify it by saying we are getting changing rooms and a fitting bay. The same changing rooms we have been waiting on for years, and what is the point of a fitting bay, if the course is awful and never open! A fitting bay just benefits money into the owners hands....the majority of members can not afford 1k plus iron sets, so this will be of no use whatsoever.

I walked the course yesterday and it was all temps, at least 9 should not be. Then when I call to book as I presumed they would be on today, as zero rain.....to be told its all temps!

The new managers must not like golfers.

Really sad to be leaving, but now they are making the price the same as higher spec courses, with real clubhouses and more support for members I am having to leave.

The owner has killed the course

Heard it wasn't a good course

But, I found it very interesting, 1st few holes can put u off , with steep hills, after that it gets better and better..

It does look like a summer course thou, I can already see the ground conditions just about holding on, it must be a swamp in winter.

A good course and definitely value for money.

Really interesting layout

Really interesting layout could’ve left the driver at home on this one. A few tea boxes could’ve done with a bit of work but some really pretty holes and the two 200 plus yard par 3s to finish the 17th especially though the tree was a brilliant hole.

Winter greens

Very disappointed to turn up to find none of the greens were in use. We'd called up in advance to check and were told the course was in fully playable condition. Shame as it looks like a cracking course with excellent facilities.

Friendly and good value

Friendly and good value

Considering its December with very miserable weather, the greens are very good. Some basic holes mixed with some superb character holes make this a great choice to play.

More importantly, i was recommended this course by an incoming Golf Director who is the best golfer ive ever played with. I'm 100% sure this golf club will become the best in the area with the new appointment as i have both played in pro-ams and done business with him.

Simon i wish you all the best
