Great.
One of the best public courses you will ever play. A great variety of holes. It struggles on some holes with drainage in the winter but its great when its dry. Beautiful mature trees. You could never get bored with this course. The people of Welwyn are lucky to have this on their doorstep.
Quality couse
Deservedly one of the best municipal courses in the country, course was very well maintained only complaint was as the sun was shining everybody taking advantage and play was a little slow. However to pay less than £20 for a course of this quality more than makes up for it!!
Great value
Considering the winter ,course was more than playable, can’t fault it for £15 when it’s dry ,any rain and it’s not very good
Good value - challenging course
Met up some friends for a round at Panshanger - it's excellent for a municipal. Pace was a little slow but good fun.
February Golf at Panshanger
The course which we've played many times before was in fairly poor state . First green around the hole very rough lots of foot traffic. Fairways very muddy and although winter rules in play it was hard to get a decent lie . I don't think we will play here again during winter months as not enough work done by green staff to keep it playing as well as possible. Also didn't appreciate the idiot in the tractor following us up the 2nd fairway trying to push us along with his engine running constantly. We teed off at 07.56hrs Friday 14th Feb '25 .
Good condition for time of year
Enjoyed the course, few holes and greens a bit wet on the lower half of the course, but nothing to bad, great compared to a few other courses I have played lately.
Nice long challenging course and will be back.👍🏻
Good course for the time of year
Considering it's January, the course was in good condition with full greens and tees in play. Reduced yardage off the yellow tees on some of the holes. Greens were surprisingly good, very true and ran well. A couple of holes were a bit of the ' sticky side' but nothing to get too over excited about. Staff in the pro shop were warm and welcoming. Course was very quiet. For a municipal course it is a good course, in good condition and technically sound..
Bargain price golf
We booked to play here as our club was closed due to flooding. Having played here before we knew what to expect. We had a friendly welcome from the clubhouse staff when having a coffee before golf. Helpful pro shop staff too. The course played very well even though conditions were very wet. Enjoyed a nice beer after and the delayed video camera on the 18th green is a great idea, enabling you to watch your approaches and putts was the cherry on The cake. All this for £21 on a Sunday, when everywhere else charges at least £30-£35. Thank you Panshanger!
Would highly recommend
Course muddy, affected by recent rains
The course is basically a good one but the recent weather has made some of the holes very muddy and the ground is heavy. We have played previously in the summer when the course and its surroundings were beautiful so hope with good weather the course returns to its best.
Avoid (during the winter)
Played this course in the summer and was enjoyable. October didn’t see loads of rainfall and other courses I play on have been fine. But the first hole was unplayable. The greens all the way round were slow, uneven and terrible. No one bothers to repair pitch marks. I even saw someone in front of me standing there bag on the green while they were putting.
The top part of the course was slightly less muddy but I came off the course struggling to push my trolley (which should be banned for the winter), and then no facility to clean shoes or a trolley
Fairways were far too long (probably as they can’t mow them), and balls were lost when hit onto the fairway.
Awful value for money - certainly during the winter….AVOID
Dissapointing
I use to play this course occasionally when I was learning to play 30 odd years ago. My nearest course Stevenage (our house borders this course) was an excellent design by John Jacobs. People used to camp overnight in the car park to get a tee time. The condition was always a problem and Panshanger another municipal pay and play was always in better condition although not as interesting. It was therefore I was looking forward to trying Panshanger again. Unfortunately I nearly walked off after the first hole. Although I would adjudge that we haven't had exceptional rain even though it was late in October. The first was unplayable due to the cloying mud, the fairways were at least 2inches thick possibly because it was too muddy to get a mower on them. The conditions improved slightly as we ventured higher up but it was a constant struggle to locate your ball even on the centre of the fairway due to the leaves which tend to be a problem on most courses at this time of year. Actually I played very well but pushing a trolley became very difficult due go the wheels picking up excessive mud and leaves. I have never come off any course in a more muddy state. The course lacked sufficient distance markers and signage to direct yourself from green to the next tee. All in all a disappointing experience and one I will not be returning to in the future. If you do decide to try the course do this in the summer.
Buggies ??
Played Saturday the 12th with buggies which in my opinion shouldn’t have been allowed got stuck on the fairways on at least half a dozen times and this messed up the fairways even more.
Nice course but maybe a bit of common sense by the golf shop would keep the course in better condition.
