Scalped greens and tine holes everywhere - no warning
Have always found Perranporth an enjoyable challenge despite it's quirkiness and numerous blind shots and errant bounces - sadly not this time.
Lovely day and a reasonable but fair breeze, but course completely let down by what can only be described as scalped greens which had been extensively tined and severely lacking grass (see photo from 5th green). It was like playing on fast compacted mud with some really tight pins on big slopes making putting a joke. Chipped a ball onto the 5th green which stopped by the pin. Walking up with my putter, it was then blown 40 yards off the green into a pond and I imagine there are far windier days - all because of the lack of grass. Entire course aerated which on approaches made low running chips and pitches reliant on not hitting aeration holes. Everything appears to have been cut so short that the grass has become stressed during the winter and lost coverage?
Disappointing experience only compounded by 4 ball of members who eventually let our 2 ball through on back 9. Lovely clubhouse and welcome but really disappointed the condition of the greens weren't mentioned even out of courtesy. Paid £35 on a hot deal which was poor, would've been livid if paid full £60. Played St Enodoc the day day before and although more expensive, was in far better condition.
Links
Entertaining links course. Few blind shots but generally well laid out. Great views.
Perranporth GC
I booked a tee @ 12 noon on Golf Now for £51 & paid £35 for the buggy in the pro shop ( too much for a buggy ).
I was booked in with 3 others … none of whom had played Perranporth before.
The clubhouse was very nice inside & there were nets & a putting green to practice on beforehand.
It was very windy on the day … but we still played in T-shirts & shorts.
I was quite disappointed with the course … none of us had a clue where we were going & it either took us ages to find out where the next tee was or which direction we should be driving as fairways were often hidden.
There is a lovely view of the beach … but not a tree on the course.
There were black & white marker posts everywhere … I’ve never had to play so many blind shots.
The greens were okay … but not in great condition considering the time of year & recent weather.
Ive played most of the courses in Wales, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire & Worcestershire … and Perranporth was quite disappointing.
Tough track!
Absolutely beautiful coastal location but a very difficult course layout with many blind shots off the men’s tees which resulted in several lost ball from what appeared good shots! Would say a course planner is essential to guide you around this course on your first visit or play with someone who knows the course well!
What a privilege
Well worth a visit. Thought we'd give this one a go even though we don't play links golf.
Loved it ! Ok so it's not the cheapest however it's worth every penny.
I'd say every hole is blind and your playing to a marker. So accuracy is key of the tee. Course management was the phrase of the day and it will reward. Even on a overcast day the scenery is beautiful and the golf course is a pleasure to play fairway is perfect and the greens our outstanding. Staff and locals are friendly. With the added bonus of playing with a local that was just doing 9 who pointed us the right direction on 4 holes.
If your a higher handicap player like me then take some balls. Thankfully the rough was forgiving to me on a couple of holes so managed to keep the lost ones down but playing conservative is hard with blind holes and fairways not always available short. Get a planner from the shop and that will help.
Exciting course
A combination of a tight, plotting course, the amazing views and the immaculate conditions of a wonderful links course.
Perranporth Golf
Played this course several times before and today was windy which made it challenging. Teamed up with a member on the 4th tee. The course was in ok condition but the worst I have seen it, clear they had recently done a lot of work to it and spiked everywhere, tees, fairways and greens. Greens were remarkably slower than previous rounds. Also noticed green fees have increased.
Good golf though and a challenge for all with many blind shots, friendly pro and member. Would play again.
Amazing course - little gem
Came down from Celtic Manor to play a few courses in Cornwall. First time plated Perranporth , what an amazing course- proper links with fantastic views . Course was in top condition and staff were so friendly. Thoroughly recommend to anyone - will certainly return and play again .
This is true links golf
Greet links course , have to say play it twice so you get to know the blind shots in . The course is immaculate, well done to the green staff . Proper challenging links golf course and the back drop views simply stunning. As a links course I can’t see there is anything better within a 100 miles it’s really is that good . Clubhouse just had revamp and looks great.
A true links test that does not disappoint
Drains very well as 4 hour downpour which stoped 20 mins before my tee time but not a trace of the water. Greens not cut that day but still quick enough to challenge lag putting. Preferred lies on damaged fairways due June drought but not a problem. Occasionally tricky to pick out the line off of tee box but aiming marker posts were accurate. Expected - and received - the links effect bounces and rolls but never unfair. A 20 mph wind made this a good links test. Overall, good experience and will definitely play again. 83 gross / 7 handicap.
Lovely views,
The views were amazing, the course was in great condition. The greens were a bit slow! I would recommend playing with someone who has played it before as there are at least 12 blind holes! Signage between greens and tees were not very helpful. Came away a bit disappointed, £75 for non members is too expensive for an average links course.
Hit it straight!
This was the first time I had played the course on a warm, sunny May Day. This course is full of blind shots, with plenty off of the tee. Even hitting the fairway, there are lots of slopes and hills so your ball can easily roll away. Greens are light lightning and often sloped so plenty of challenging puts. I was +1 through six and ended up +14, playing off 10. I wouldn’t recommend playing this with higher handicappers as you’ll spend a huge amount of time looking for balls in the rough. The slope index was surprising as I would have thought it would be higher.
Staff were very friendly, as were other players on the course. Speed of play was good too.
Very good
The course was in very good condition greens very fast lots of challenging holes but overall I will be playing the course again in July
Perranporth March 2023
Really stunning course and very tricky for a high handicap golfer however very enjoyable. Loads of blind shots and can spend a while looking for your ball. When I booked and played we were told after we turned uo that we would be playing off fairway matts but still oaying the full price . Would have been nice to know this before booking as had travelled 2 hours to play
Stunning coastal views
Fantastic course with incredible views throughout. Course was in excellent condition with real character throughout. There’s a lot of blind shots - felt like every hole on the back 9 had at least one - so tricky to play first time. This did get a little a little tiresome by the end but the overall quality of the views, layout and green complexes made up for it imo. Well worth playing if you’re in the area.
Fantastic course, great views and hard enough to challenge all golfers
Course was in fantastic condition. For first time players be warned there are quite a few blind tees.
Back to Perranporth
Again another fun enjoyable round at Perranporth. Cool and blowy as but stayed dry. Did have to use fairway mats for the first time. A few ropey shots on them to begin but then got used to them. As a result shame still full green fee but course still busy so there was still the demand. Changing rooms were great but did not use clubhouse as had the dog which was shame as they had my favourite pint on tap.
Hateful
I don't think in 60 years of playing golf, both at an amateur and a professional level, have I enjoyed a course less. I'm sure I played it in 1970 as a 19-year-old assistant professional (scratch) but I don't remember it being such an impossible layout. Almost every hole is blind - yes even the short holes - and even second/third shots can be blind. After hitting a straight drive over the marker post, one would logically expect to find one's ball in the fairway...oh no, the fairways tilt in all directions. So that straight shot will be off in the rough somewhere - IF you manage to find it !!
I gave up and walked in after 9 holes.
