Justifies it's status
Perennially in the Top 50 under £100, and you can see why. Classic links in great condition even after the recent cold and snow. Fairways running firm and fast, and immaculate greens. Loads of great holes with interestingly located greens, but quite a lot of blind shots, which can make it difficult to navigate if you've not been before (and if you're a bit of a punter and can't guarantee hitting the line of the marker posts).
Seems like it's always windy, so at least half of the holes will be into a head wind, which adds to the challenge.
Clubhouse is lovely, and all the staff seem friendly.
Only niggle is that in places it's tricky to find your way round as there are no signposts and no hole layouts, but I guess it's fine if you're following a group in front.
If you like this, go and play at Seascale further down the coast, for even less money.
The best pound for pound links course you can play....
if you are anywhere near the North West of England go and play this.... it is epic.... it is as good as any around and doesn't have the mystique because it is not in Scotland. But honestly one of the best courses i have played anywhere and for the price truly wonderful. We played it on the way down from Scotland and they accommodated us on a Saturday afternoon. The staff are all excellent, warm and friendly.... The course was truly fantastic condition.
Desperate to play it again as there are a number of blind holes and if you're slightly off line then it's ball gone.
This is one of the best courses you can play irrespective of the money....
Gets better every time
Unbelievable value for money, ranked 18th in England this year and it still feels underrated somehow, greens were absolutely pure, tee boxes are all immaculate, layout is insane!!
If you haven’t played and love golf get down here asap the drive time is worth it
Top top links course
Unbelievably quick greens , an absolute worldie of a golf course,a must for anyone up in the the proper north! Best I've played by a mile !
Gets better every time
By far the best value course in the UK not even close, greens are like carpets, tee boxes are immaculate, good luck shooting your handicap it’s got serious teeth this place
Special day - for many reasons!
I last played Silloth as part of a 5 round golf society, about 10 years ago, and never forgot how amazing it was, so wanted to take my current golf partners. They were 100% knocked out by it, and so was I, even on my 6th trip. Best of all (personally) I bagged my first ever hole in one on the 9th - and I don’t think I’d ever previously hit the green.
A perfect day. If you haven’t played Silloth, book it NOW.
Best most challenging course iv played
Absolutely love Silloth great condition for this time of year firm no standing water anywhere played first time on a calm day played the second on a windy day totally different beast will be back asap
Not for the faint hearted
You stand on the 1st tee and you realise why this is a championship golf course. No room for error, punishing rough. Don't get too down hearted it gets better by about the 10th. The course was in great condition in particular the greens. Take your camera for some stunning views whilst you are looking for your partners golf ball in some gorse or Heather that covers the course. Great experience.
Natural Golf
This course reminded me of Brora and Machrihanish in that it seemed untouched by humanity. The course is a great links with all of the proper elements. There are a couple of blind drives and a few blind approaches. The green sites are interesting (most notably the 4th with 10 foot slopes on each side) and the presence of the sea is constant. You can play the ball on the ground and the wind is the greatest factor. Finding the correct side of the fairway is essential on most holes.
The only disadvantage is the remote location. It is about 2.5 hours from Liverpool/Manchester. I would still highly recommend it. Play it during the week as green fees for a day ticket are about $70. This is one of the best values I have ever encountered and possible the best.
The course itself provides challenge, especially in a wind. Many holes are best played without seeking the pin. The first has a downslope to a hidden green so allowing the ball to roll helps. The par 5 13th has a crowned green that runs away at the back. The par 3 9th has a slope on the left side that runs down onto the green. There are many other times where knowing the slopes for the approaches helps. All the more reason to play it twice.
If you are a true links lover, then I highly recommend playing here. I stopped on my way up to Scotland. The natural feel is on par with the best Scotland has to offer. It was well worth the detour and the price was unbeatable. They have a restaurant, putting green and all the things you'd want for a day. Plenty of great holes and no bad ones. If you were a member here, you couldn't grow tired of it. Be a member for a day.
