Wokefield review
I played on a perfect day, early in spring. The course layout is excellent, and the challenge depends upon which tee is used.
The course condition is very poor, the fairways are patchy, have divot holes which are unrepaired and in some places ,the grass hasn’t been cut .
The greens are of variable quality, some are good eg 18th,but others contain more moss than grass .It could be so much better, but they need to spend money on maintenance.I didn’t see any work being carried out on the course.
Great course greens fantastic for time of year
Very friendly staff, starter couldn’t do more to get me out before my teetime as I arrived very early, course was in great noc for time of year, slightly wet in a couple of areas as to be expected, some bunkers had standing water, but overall really good conditions to play golf. Greens were great for this time of year, rolled really true, cannot wait to play this course in the middle of summer. Seen alot of poor reviews based on pace of play, I was out myself and the 4 groups infront let me play through no problem,
Great Course
The course had suffered from the down pours of rain, and so as expected the course was very boggy in places. The greens however were in great condition. The back 9 was far more enjoyable, as the fairways were more playable.
The course and facilities however were amazing, I can’t wait to play it in the summer.
Wet, great greens, interesting course layout poor welcome and amenities
For £22.99, there isn’t much to sniff about course-wise especially during the winter months. However, the welcome in the pro shop was as dull as the weather and with no clubhouse or amenities open for a pre-round coffee and a post-round pint, it was a significantly below par. Additionally, one sink blocked and the toilets were not exceptionally unsanitary.
The positive side was that the greens were in very good condition and the course layout was intriguing - would be interested to play it in the summer.
Very soggy in a lot of places doesn’t drain that well.
Not a bad layout and for £25 it’s pretty good value for money
Better midweek
Played there on a Saturday a few months back - awful, far too slow, etiquette out the window, buggies doing donuts. Played on a Thursday and no issues, course was in good condition considering the Weather, and Pace if play much better, again probably because of the weather but a much better experience even at just 3c.
Good Course - Needs a Starter
Fun course with interesting layout and some excellent holes with multiple options. Pace of play was slow when I was there, two two balls that were paired for one tee time decided to split, with no staff near the first tee nobody stopped this and it caused delays. Some fairways were muddy in places (expected with conditions). Greens were excellent with good slopes and fun pin positions. A lot of Bunkers has water / hard sand in which was slightly disappointing. A fun course in a great setting, would be incredible in summer, suffers slightly for winter golf.
Great course in great condition for the time of year
I played here on Friday morning and I must say for the wet autumn we have had the course is in a great conditions. The green were true and fast not one single bobble. Also good to see the green keepers all out doing the best they can at this challenging time of year
Poor condition
Terrible condition corse. Fairways grass was so long you would loose your ball. Muddy and boggy and the greens in bad condition.
5 1/2 hours on a Monday..
5hrs 30mins to play a round of golf on a Monday!?
Waiting on EVERY SINGLE SHOT.
9+ people on every hole, stopping you playing the hole the way you intended without playing into people or being hit yourself. Spent most of the round sat in floor waiting to play a shot.
Greens were patchy and largely disappointing, yellow tee boxes were particularly bad.
Then after all that it's £20 for a very average burger.
Could be a fantastic course but seems the golf side is bottom of the priority list.
Not sure I will return
I've played Wokefield numerous times and think the course layout is very good. Pro shop staff and really helpful, as was the guy in the half way hut. Greens were good. Generally the course looks like it is well maintained BUT the negatives was the course is so dry. The fairways are very brown and so hard. It's strange that other courses are no where near this hard. It makes it hard to play quality shots when it's like playing off a path. Also the voice of the ball makes it hard to control. The other thing was the speed of play, or lack of it. I guess we were unlucky but following retired folk playing Texas scramble was painful....over 5 hours for a 2 ball is just to slow.
It's a shame as the venue has so much potential but it was least enjoyable round of the year.
Sooooo Slooow
Not played Wokefield for about 6 months when we walked off after playing 9 holes due to the speed of play. It used to be a regular choice for us over the last 10 years).
Decided to give it another try with a Tues lunchtime tee off, hoping that it would be considerably quieter. Nope!
When we got to the third, a simple par 3, there were 3 groups waiting to tee off. After somehow showing enough patience, we completed the 12th and had taken 3 hours 25 mins. and so the round ended. Never again!!!
Pick your day wisely
This is specifically from my experience on the day, I imagine during a weekday, it would have been different.
Course in good condition considering the hot weather, some fairways a bit burned, but overall the grounds team clearly do a lot of work keeping the place running.
Layout really good fun, plenty of risk v reward. The water can be extremely punishing in places unless you play tactically. Don't think that just because there are a few short par 4s they're easy, extremely well placed bunkers and creative fairway design mean you need to be able to think as well as hit. Get the course guide from the shop if it's your first time!
Halfway house is pleasant, a bit expensive, but nice.
Unfortunately, on the day I played there was clearly a society/social match on, and by the looks of things it was their one day out a year. Pace of play was terrible and no Marshalls out policing it. Groups were seen playing bumpercars with the buggies and the greens looked like the Somme circa 1918. The best thing to come from the stack of 2x 4balls and the 1x 5ball on the tees was the ability to go around fixing the greens while waiting. I doubt the course is like this on a week day, would love to try it again.
Stand out hole is definitely the 2nd, brilliant design and a bunker you could build a beach resort in!
Sunday Afternoon Golf
Enjoyed the round. The weather also behaved itself.
Great Course
Had a great game of golf, not too busy and the course was in excellent condition. Overall very happy apart from a very rude woman in a buggy who was part of a society playing that day.
