Fantastic Fall Round
Fun and challenging course! Course was in great condition -- greens were very challenging but fair. A lot of variety in this layout with great use of the elevation changes. Would play again for sure!
Challenge!
Not many flat spots on entire course. Unique and beautiful layout. Much more challenging than expected and ratings indicate.
Great links course
Great layout, need to know your yardage. Weather was warm light wind. I will definitely play again.
Great course
I thought this course had all the elements you are looking for in a round of golf. You have part link style along with different elevations. The course was in great shape!
Great experience
Course was in great shape! Never have played a course like it - it is different than other links courses.
Undulations on the greens are challenging.
Only complaint is the employee in the halfway house was rude.
Great Course
This is one of the best courses in the area. I love playing here. It is always in great shape.
A second play is needed to fully appreciate the course
I'd heard a lot about Stoatin Brae over the last few years so I was excited to play it as part of our golf package with Gull Lake View golf resort. (There is an upcharge to play it, however.)
To begin with, the view from on top of the course is terrific as it is located on one of the highest places in that part of Michigan. The course would be considered a "links-light" architecture with huge greens, lots of bunkering, fescue bordering, and few trees.
The greens took some getting used to because of their hard, but slow features. They seemed to be on the grainy side which affected putts as they slowed. The layout is fine and the course was in outstanding condition overall. The flatter front 9 is a little more non-descript than the rolling (and more challenging) back 9. There are a number of tee boxes to choose from. The gravel/rock cart paths are ok, but I'm assuming that they will be paved at some point. The staff was pleasant and accommodating - especially since we were running a little late after a flat tire. There is a great halfway house with an interesting setting. We played the course again - 2 days later - and enjoyed it much more. We knew where we were going, knew what to expect on the greens, and could appreciate the routing better.
I guess I was a little let down by Stoatin Brae because I had heard so much build-up about it. Don't get me wrong, Stoatin Brae is a solid course and I would certainly play it again as part of a Gull Lake package, but I wouldn't necessary play it as a standalone or drive a long distance to play it.
Amazing day at Stoatin Brae
Great links golf course with plenty of elevation change. Very friendly staff and a halfway house called “the Bunker” that you pass 3 times was a treat! The vistas were breathtaking. Definitely going to play it again.
Not Impressed
Carts not updated
Grass too long in fairways and especially the greens.
Overall course impression does not deserve a Top 100 ranking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Leaves the impression you the owners are barely getting by financially!!!!
Solid Links-Style Course
I've played here about a dozen times, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I played with my dad, brother and friend this time. The pace of play was slow (4.5 hour round) but not too slow considering it was a Sunday afternoon in July. If I could suggest one thing, they need a beverage cart running. You would not only make a ton of money, but you would make the round more enjoyable for a lot of people. I had a blast as always, will definitely be back again.
All great except server at bunker way station for food and bev was a no show
