Wailea Golf Club - Gold Course

About
The Gold at Wailea Golf Club is unapologetically the most challenging of the three championship courses at Wailea Golf Club, part of the 1,500-acre resort on Maui's southern coast and 17 miles from Kahului Airport. The golfcourse hosted The Champions Skins Game from 2001-2007 and plays over 7,000 yards from the championship tees. The Robert Trent Jones Jr. design opened in 1994 and features his signature large, splashed bunkers, while utilizing the land's natural undulations. It was also recognized by the Maui Historical Society for its preservation of prehistoric lava rock walls during course construction. Views from the Gold course expand beyond Wailea and to Molokini Islet and Pacific Ocean.

The teeth of the dog
Here's where it gets real. This is the toughest of the 3 courses at Wailea. Loved every minute of it.
Staff remembered me, after playing the Emerald course earlier. Made me feel welcome.
It is hard to keep your focus on this course, with the views of the ocean and Molikini on almost every hole.
The gold course has a large amount of bunkers, that seem to jump out and bite you. Just try to stay out of them. But, they play true, and are fairly easy to get out of.
Multiple tees to allow you to play to your ability. Don't be afraid to play forward, if you have any doubt.
Loved this course
It's the Gold course for a reason
The Gold course has everything the Wailea Emerald has from amazing views overlooking the ocean and incredible elevation changes with a bigger challenge. If you handled your business on the Emerald course ( a must play course ), then move up to the more challenging Gold course. The Gold is every bit as fun as the Emerald just a bit less forgiving, with a higher importance of accuracy and course management.
A Maui gem
I've not played the Emerald, so I can't declare the Gold the best course at Wailea, but I have heard people say it is. I can see why. It's a very pleasant experience. The backdrops of the ocean are beautiful, and so is the landscaping. The holes are well laid out. While they are challenging, they are not penal. This is resort golf at its finest. Most come to Maui to chill, and Wailea provides those calming island vibes.
Solid Choice on Maui
Definitely the toughest of the courses at Wailea. Front 9 of the Gold course is more interesting than the back. Nicely conditioned and pace of play was about 4:15 on a busy Saturday. Definitely worth the play if you’re staying at one of the Wailea resorts.
GOLD COURSE GREAT! EMERALD? BETTER!
I've played the Emerald at Wailea three times prior, so I thought it was time to give the other course a try. It was similar to the Emerald, but two significant changes. One, it has less views. With the exception of one hole, the views were pretty limited. Compare that to the Emerald, which is loaded with gorgeous ocean views of Molokini and more. I would def suggest the Emerald over the Gold for that experience. Second, the Gold course was a bit harder. Sloped a 130 from one up tee box. While it wasn't too challenging, I did notice tighter tree lines (was in 'em) and some quality approach shots to a small green that rolls of the green and almost in a bunker. My buddy who is a higher handicap didn't have as much relative trouble based on his driving distance etc. So, I would say it's very player friendly for a higher handicap. I'm a mid handicap, play to a 9-11 depending. In summary, do the Emerald unless you feel like you need a greater challenge.
Another perfect day at Gold
I can never say enough about Wailea Gold. The course is always in great condition. Even though we played with sanded greens we had a great time. The fairways are wide and roll. One of the best courses in Hawaii.
Beautiful day in paradise!
Great views throughout the golf course. Course was in great shape. Excellent happy hour in the bar! Was staying in Kaanapali but well worth the drive.
Like playing at Disneyland
I loved, loved, loved the course and kick myself for not playikng the Emerald course as well.
The tee boxes, fairways, sandtraps and greens were all in fantastic shape. When you throw in the gorgeous ocean views and awesome landscape, it's easy to forget I just dropped 2 bills to chase a little white ball. No matter, this is my mecca.
Awesome
Doesn't get much better. The setting, range, pro shop and the course are fantastic. Greens were a little slow that day? Whatever!!
Perfect Hawaiian golfing
I always make sure I play at the Wailea Golf club in Maui. The course is located in the Wailea area of Maui. We stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani or the Grand Wailea when we come to vacation. The course is always in immaculate condition with the friendliest and accomodating staff you can find. I've played at and stayed at Pebble Beach and would have to say Wailea Golf club is beyond better in comparison to customer service. You can never have a bad round there because the views alone just makes you forget the troubles you are having on the course. I will always make a stop there whenever I am in Maui!
Amazing Conditions
From the first step onto the property the view and quality was apparent. The staff addressed you with nothing but kindness and desire to tend to your every need. Absolute amazing service and happy staff. Fantastic practice and warm up facilities. I played as a single and played with the most welcoming members ever, they showed me the ropes and they were more then amazing when helping me with the layout of this stunning course! From start to finish. The staff to the perfection of the grounds keepers, this course with exceed any golfers expectations of what a quality course should be!
Great course - better than Kapalua
Played this course 3 times in one week. The weather in Kapalua, where we were staying, was a bit showery so we followed the sun to Wailea. Great idea as we discovered the Gold course. Wonderful layout, great views, great staff.
We belong to a top golf course at home where the green fees are $250/round, so we (my wife and I) are familiar with what a good course looks like. The Gold course is right up there with the top courses on the mainland.
Came back for two additional rounds, and these were just as fun. Great views from most holes, and the condition of the course is top flight.
We played the Bay course in Kapalua and were really disappointed by the course condition and the stupid new hole layout following the recent relocation of the clubhouse (Nov 2018).
Have fun - you won't regret spending the $$ on this loop.
Paradise Golf
I have played the Gold Course but it had been a few years. Course was as expected in phenomenal shape. Greens were little slower than I am used to Bermuda Grass Greens take a little time to get used to. If your putting into the grain hit it firm!! Course is extremely more difficult when the wind starts to blow. Play early mornings to avoid this.
very nice
booked an early tee time to stay out of the wind and was lucky to have amazing weather. the course is heavily bunker so be prepared for that. booked as a single but was paired up with 2 other guys who were a good time. definitely makes you think off the tee box with your club selection. driving range is disappointing as you have to take a separate cart to go to the range. greens are tricky to read with speed. i recommend the course to anyone looking for a nice course in wailea.
A real treat
While the gold doesn't offer as many stunning views as the emerald, the course is a treat none the less. A bit more challenging with more bunkering that is strategically placed. Overall though the course is very fun and worth the money.
Maui Must Play
Awesome ocean views paired with a great design and great conditions to play on. This course with Plantation are top notch golf experiences on Maui.
A Must Play
This course was manicured perfectly. The greens were smooth and quick and the fairways were lush and the rough thick. The most challenging aspect of the course is the strategically placed bunkers. You will most likely hit it in at least one bunker when you play. I definitely recommend playing this course when visiting Maui.
Hard not to have fun
This was my second bite at the apple that is Hawaii golf, and I greatly benefitted from what I learned about the greens the previous day on the Emerald course. Putts do not break as much as you. Putts into the grain and downgrain generally stay in the cup. When putting across grain, read whatever break you see, then halve it. Just my experience. The Gold does not have the elevation change that the Emerald does, and the holes are a little beefier. The back nine is fantastic and the final four holes are really good, especially if you have a good score going and are trying to make pars. The rough is thick here, so don't try to do too much when getting the ball back in play. Driving range was mats only. Expansive putting green was an accurate portrayal of the greens encountered on the course.
Excellent Greens
Outstanding course, not to difficult. Greens were in excellent shape. Was set to go out as a single in second group of day. Played with the twosome that started as first group of day. Didn't hurry, played in under 4 hours. Very fair course.
high quality golf. high quality scenery.
played wailea gold on a recent trip to maui. it's full of stunning views! the course itself is in my mind a classic resort course. fairly open to allow any skill level player to have a good time, but interesting enough to keep things exciting for a better player.
the biggest defenses this course has are tiny greens and length. the day i played the wind was calm, but i can imagine it'd be tough with a stiff breeze.
overall, this is a great course that is well worth playing. the view never gets old, and the golf is pretty great too!
