Wet but Playable
I was prepared to walk, but arrived to learn that carts were availble for Cart Path Only riding. This was very easy to do since concrete cart path ring the entire course. the fairways were soggy from previous rains and snow melts, but it was easy to find firm spots to play from nearby. I played as a single and moved along at a good pace behind a twosome who offered to let me play through. However, I preferred to take my time and periodically hit a few extra approaches and putts. The course has a variety of hole designs, so it was interesting to play, and for December 28, I would do this one every time.
Always fun course
I like GCI it has nice greens with a fun layout that you can score on if you hit straight.
It was a colder day like 20F so I was the only one on the course. The water hazards were frozen but that is winter golf in Chicago. This course played quickly with just me I finished in 2hrs 30 min walking / jogging to keep warm. I play here about 5 times a year and would play more often if it were closer. Try it in the spring ( or with me in the winter) you won’t be disappointed.
Good links style layout with two par 3s over water. Conditions were great for this late in the season and very cheap rates.
GCI is a fun place to play
I've played this course for many years now.... They have made it quite a bit easier by cutting down all the high festivity that used to be there.... A course still is very challenging because it is long in his narrow greens
Fairways and tee boxes
Nice course but layout can actually be dangerous! At least 2 or 3 case where you have to wait for people to tee off or vice a versa before you hit your fairway shot. You have to pay attention.over all good course will play again soon
Long season
Par three tee boxes were very chewed up but the longer holes were fine. Unfortunately, no one who plays here bothers to rake a trap or fix a ball mark on the green.
Good Test
Haven’t played here in a couple years , not one of my favorites
Not easy
Practice green is much better than regular greens as far as speed and true roll
Bunkers need work, rocks and some have little or no sand
Carts - need to be replaced Don’t play here if there is a chance of rain- no windshield or rear hood
Fairways in average condition
We were a foursome and played in 3:50 minutes with 2 beginners that shot 120 plus ( ran out of balls)
So pace was good
Pro shop and starter both told us pin placement was 2 - it was three
One of the grounds crew was having a loud discussion a few yards from the green , looked at us and just continued his loud conversation.
This place is not worth $65
Course maintenance was not done before golfers teed off.
We teed off at 7:00 am and it was a cool morning so there was heavy condensation on the greens, fairways, everywhere. We played 5 holes before the maintenance staff cut the greens, then we played the next 4 cut, but got to the 10th and had to play that green not cut. You could not putt on the greens not cut, it was extremely slow and water was spraying up everywhere. Also, it’s not that easy to adjust to the speed when you have to go back and forth to the greens in this condition..The staff was raking traps, cutting greens & fairways up to 10:00 the morning. This is completely unacceptable for full price on a holiday weekend round. I went to the pro shop after the round to complain and the response I got was “I don’t know why that happened”. I play golf on the weekends and if I pay full price I expect the course to make sure it is playable, very dissatisfied.
Nice course slow play
GCI is a nice venue with a fun links style layout. The greens are normally receptive but quick today they were overwatered and slow..
The pace was too slow 2hrs 20 min for nine holes so we played the front twice and finished in four hours. They want a lot of money like 70 bucks so look for a discount on GolfNow I paid 41 bucks on a Holiday weekend at 1 pm.
Decent Enough 3.5 stars
It has been a number of years since I visited GCI. I'm well into double digits as to my number of plays at this venue. It's in decent shape except all of the sand traps need a refurb. Greens were hard as rock and speedy. No ball marks to speak of because even well struck shots didn't make much of a dent. The green pads have lost some of their size - some to the point where the pads are getting rather small for some pin positions. Fairways rock hard, very tight lies and still need to grow and get cut a few times. Rough is lush in a # of areas but is hit and miss. A number of areas where they've filled in sand traps and attempting to grass them over. The ones they filled in definitely make the course more playable. 12th hole left fairway by the pond is a complete mess of mud, puddles and dirt. All of the help was very nice and desire that you have a good experience. It's a links type course.....no trees to fend with usually plays windy and long. Bring the sunscreen and hot days there's no shade at all - or try to play on a cloudy day if you can. Good clubhouse, good beverage selections with food and a driving range to warm up. There was a course nurse after being told there wasn't one. The practice green is worthless...way too sloped and basically promotes leaving all of your putts short on the first few holes. Play a tee box up.....even at 6200 yard tees there are several holes you won't reach in regulation. Course does have pace of play issues when crowded....and gets even worse as the day progresses - especially when it's hot and sunny. Dick (Ted) Nugent wango tango design that's entertaining to visit at least once a season. Recommend the course.....solid 3.5 star experience. Paid 52....it's a 40-45 course.
