Favorite course in savannah area
I love this course. The staff is friendly. The facilities are top notch. The course conditions are amazing. The course is typical Donald Ross. Don't be long into the greens. The fairways were like carpet. There are tons of bunkers in great shape and a good amount of water. The rough is thick Bermuda. Don't be a hero and just get it back into the fairway on long rough shots. My family goes to tybee every other year and I make sure I have time to play each time. The course has never disappointed. The price is perfect as well. Course of this shape typically cost $20-$30 more per round. Thanks for another great outing.
Great place to play except after rain.
Usually in good shape, sometimes the greens are spotty with mold/dead spots. Overall a fun course to play with a good layout. It is usually quiet in the afternoons, especially on the weekends. Don't play here if it rained 1-2 days prior because some of the fairways don't dry out well.
Good time and course
This is must play while visiting Savannah. Golf course was in good shape and the pace of play was perfect.
Tough Course
Tough course for average golfer. Only three or four par 3s; long and wide par 4s and 5s. Tough to find balls in the rough; pine cones etc. Sand flees annoying this time of the year. Need to carefully navigate around tee boxes, most of which are not numbered. Good for private club members familiar with the course, but not new visitors.
All said , overall liked the course and plan to return while on vacation in the area.
Great value course,, recommend
This is one of the two best available courses in the Savannah area, and the least expensive of the two, so I would recommend to anyone traveling to Savannah. Old style course that has been kept in very decent condition for a non-private. Course is challenging without beating you up. Not as long as most newer courses but well bunkered, very little water to deal with. Good facility, unlimited practice area included with round.
Members get preferred tee times, and the staff makes no effort to pair you with other players so you may be stuck as a single if traveling alone, or unable to meet someone on the range before playing.
Questionable Donald Ross
Have to agree with previous reviewer--no way this is a 4 star track--2 stars maybe. They punched the greens but failed to indicate this in the pro shop--shouldn't this be a given now....Seems this was a private track at one time then went public. You can certainly tell this as course conditions were not very good.
No ranger on the course to speed up play....I quit after 4 holes due to too many golfers on the course and frustrated by slow play....
very disappointed
Visiting Savannah from Canada.
Unfortunately, the greens were sanded the day before and thus felt cheated. Booked the round based on 4 star course reviews. Even if the greens were not sanded I would give it a low 3 rating. Drove a long way from hotel. Hope the course and/or golf now highlight such occurence in the future.
Some good, some less good
My only negatives were prior to play.
AMX not accepted, did not know until paying in pro shop. Second, practice tee was hit off mat only, mats did not have tees. I don't care to scuff my clubs on a plastic mat.
Course was in reasonable shape for the dry time of year, greens were great.
As a single, I played 18 in just under 2.5 hours on a Wednesday mid-morning.
Course was in great condition. Would play again should I be back in Savannah
Course was in great condition with pace of play very good. I would recommend this course to anyone.
Enjoyed the layout and the greens were beautiful.
I'll return soon.
Worth your time
This was my first round at Wilmington Island. Always heard good things about the course. Played two weeks after Hurricane Matthew came through and except for the tree debris still piled up on the course, the course looked and played as if nothing had happened.
The rate was a little higher than I usually pay but understand as it is a premier course in this area.
Deep Rough, Old Style Design
Course was in decent shape. Old design which was a nice change. The course is right in front of you with no tricks. A word of advice, "stay in the fairway if you want to score". They receive a lot of damage from the hurricane but a cleaning up the course nicely. We got a Hot Deal so the value was great but I wouldn't pay more than $50 to play this course. One good thing... Free range balls
A huge surprise
I was In Hilton Head and courses closed after Matthew. I was a little hesitant to drive this far to play golf but it was definitely worth the trip. Loved the course, was in good condition considering the storm and people extremely friendly.
Always a treat
I have played Wilmington Island Club several times and this is the best condition I have seen. The greens putted very nicely and held and the tees and fairways were full and well prepared. The layout is interesting and also challenging, especially the par 3's. The fairways are fair, but some might find them tight and keeping the ball in the fairway here is a must for good scoring. Visiting Savannah? I highly recommend playing here as it is a good value for the money.
very nice course
Very nice course in excellent condition. Good practice facility as well.
I had the same issue with AMEX not being accepted at the course and they acted like I was crazy. To put into perspective the course is on an island and I have rarely encountered golf courses that don't accept American Express. Good review
