Mistwood Golf Club
The Good: Up-and-coming Irish links style layout southwest of Chicago was recently renovated by original designer Ray Hearn. Superb course conditions and excellent, large greens will test all players. One of the best collections of Par 5's in the Chicago metro area, good variety in Par 4's and a few standout Par 3's on the closing nine. Visually appealing with nearly a dozen pot bunkers sprinkled throughout. Excellent clubhouse and separate dining room and bar. One of the better public practice facilities and learning centers in the state. Good service and decent value at under $100 during peak season. GPS on carts!
The Bad: Not much to complain about, but lack of nice restroom areas is a minus. On-course service can improve. Several forced carries can be tough for high handicappers. Houses aren't intrusive but still take away from the ambiance.
The Verdict: Mistwood is quickly becoming one of the true "destination" courses in greater Chicago land. A complete golfing experience - potentially could become a Top 5 public course in Illinois.
Best Hole: All the holes in "Kelpie's Korner" are brutal, but the best is the Par 5 #15 is a dogleg left around water.
Talk about a joke. They call this a good course? WOW, just WOWWW!
Where to begin?
To get to the point, this is a very overrated golf course May as well be a big dump in the middle of a cornfield in regards to what they built here. I will be asking myself for years as to why I spent money at this place.
Below Average.
Mistwood is trying. I can say that. But it’s a work in progress with ways to go. They have an amazing range. And greens and bunkers were for most part solid. Everything else needs major work.
I love the layout so I hope it becomes what it has potential for. And it’s close to fair for the price.
What we didn’t like was zero ranger influence. Our front 9 took 2:10 (fair on Sunday). The back we got stuck behind a couple who was clearly new to golf. That’s understandable but they wouldn’t let us play through even when we asked, were waiting for par 4s and 5s to clear for long 2nd shots in, etc. Back 9 took over 3 hours. No ranger to police them.
Over crowded
They pack up the course, you’re always waiting and being rushed at the same time. Consistently playing under pressure. We got shot into twice almost got hit both times. Everyone playing was rude. Not a nice experience. The golf carts are constantly having issues with the GPS and stop on the cart path The course is nice though.
Tricked up course.
Overall conditions of the course was fine and good, and the overall amenities are nice, but the course itself is just not fun. Absolutely brutal and tricked up course that is borderline unfair. Higher handicap golfers should avoid this course like the plague unless you want to lose a truck load of balls and your sanity in the process. Not a fun round.
Private experience? Hardly, and that is being kind.
After hearing all the hype about this place I decided to give it a shot. First impression, highly overrated. Not really sure what their marketing department is trying to do by saying this place is like a private golf club, but to each their own.
Pace of play was horrendous and the condition of the greens were on the level of a $50 muni that neglects their facility on a consistent basis spending $$$ in all the wrong places. With the $$$ they charge to play here its quite insulting that they take pride in supposedly being the best public golf experience in Chicagoland.
If the owners & management of this place are reading this, I hope they take notes to make the proper changes that will make this golf course better, playable, and enjoyable. As of right now there are many better options and bang for your buck. Maybe one day this course will finally live up to expectations that are currently getting an F on this report card. For the time being when I come back and visit the area I will be playing elsewhere. Will I eventually return to Mistwood one day? Possibly, but time will tell.
Great Course
Mistwood was in great shape and the greens were rolling true. The staff is friendly and the pace of play was excellent. I recommend this course to everyone I meet. Thanks again!
Southwest side
Course was in great shape. First high level course I have played that range balls were included with the greens gees. Practice area was ok wish the grass Tees were open. Playing on a Monday all amenities were fully opened and staffed.
Awesome greens and layout
My favorite course in SW Chicagoland based on pace of play, variety of holes and difficult but true greens.
Mistwood Members - Read this and take it to heart!!
Mistwood is a PUBLIC golf course with way too many SELFISH/completely inconsiderate members.
We were truly fortunate to paired up with a PGA Pro who has played a number of Korn Ferry events and his caddie. Both of them awesome - fun to talk with/thoughtful individuals. Great guys. We had a absolutely wonderful joyous afternoon together with lots of laughs.......however it was marred two experiences - one personally for me at the driving range bar and another that our foursome experienced on the 10th and 11th holes. Even when my playing partner and I were enjoying our dinner post round the vibe around us didn't seem really welcoming at all.
To a person the staff are absolutely fabulous and frankly they shouldn't have to put up with about 50pct of you. They shouldn't have to put up with your "entitlement".'....this a public course and sorry.....but you should respect the employees as well as John Q Public patrons just like anybody else at the golf club. Heck were we playing with a very accomplished pro and his caddy who was a very good golfer in his own right.....remember??
At the driving range bar a female "member" was acting like a member....and ordering lunch for her group making the turn. I felt sorry for the bartender. 4 different meat sandwiches with all kinds of modifications. It took over 4 minutes to write down the order.- it was so complicated with no this/add that and of yeah none of that. Ridiculous and now I know why there was slow play later in our round.
On the Par 3 ninth hole the group in front of us was clearing the green when we arrived at the tee box. We played the ninth and did not even stop to get beverages or anything at the turn. We tee off on the 10th hole and we start driving off. All of sudden behind us this guy yells at us and says hey we're only a two-some can we play through? I explain we're right on the group in front of us. We park up at the green....the looking to my left I discovered the group in front had only played nine as 11th hole was clear. I yelled back at the two some who were now in the fairway.....we'll tee off on 11 and let you play through. We all teed off the pro/caddy in the fairway and two of us in the right rough all with good to decent approach shots on the par 4.....and then drove up a tad and got way out of the way so the 2 some could tee off and play through. These two guys (I really should call them jack-a-lopes) took their sweet time teeing off......they then drove right past us - no thank you or even an acknowledgement of our COURTESY. Then it got really ridiculous. One of the guys couldn't find his ball... it was way right and probably OB.......but then the two of them actually spent a full 5 minutes looking for his ball while we're waiting 20 yards behind them!!! The guy who lost his ball finally got around to dropping one took another 2 minutes to get a scope yardage and hit his approach shot.....his playing partner drove over to the left rough where his tee shot was....couldn't locate it initially and then took his sweet time before he even hit his approach shot. Then they did the same thing around the green and putting. A ridiculous rude as heck side show with another 10 minutes of wait. None of us could believe it......I asked the pro - you ever seen anything like this? He was incredulous. When we finished 11 these two jack-a-lopes were barely off the 12th tee.
We ran into the beverage cart at the 13th tee. I asked the gal if these two guys were Mistwood members. Sheepishly she said yes....I could tell even she wasn't too pleased with them. I couldn't hold back my feelings about them.....and I owe her an apology.
These guys then pulled very same stunt to the group in front of us on the Par 3 14th.....begged them to play through and then took there time to the point our foursome ended up stacked on top of their foursome before they even teed off on 14. RIDICULOUS!! The golfing gods should send these guys to golf purgatory. And maybe the management at Mistwood will figure out who these two guys are and REVOKE their memberships. Self entitled complete jack-a-lopes that should not be allowed on any golf course. Want to drive business away? These guys are experts at that.
The course itself was in fine shape - but for some reason the greens seemed a bit sketchy....the pro had several putts that unusually and suddenly veered the opposite direction (large sand particles perhaps?) and the rest of us struggled as well....the greens seem to roll nice but then they don't....tough to explain.....
Top notch restaurant/bar for food/cocktails post round. Full driving range and practice facilities included with your greens fee off mats. The bathroom facilities are really lacking....one extremely smelly head in the driving range building and only two in the locker room. Wall to wall wet carpeting near and around shower area that's pretty gross.
I don't what it is this season but Mistwood joins a growing list that has an extremely poor beer selection to quaff on course. No microbrews or locals were available....what gives?
Mistwood bills itself as a public course providing a private club experience. Yesterday was definitely not the case. 3 stars and ZERO stars for several of your entitled members. Yes they should be called members....you know what I mean..
Mistwood average joe
I am a bogey golfer and loved this course. It is not easy but a step up from anything around. The staff is beyond the best and care about you and your needs. The food is unbelievable. What is not to like?

Mistwood on Windy Day
First time playing Mistwood. 5 stars all around. It was windy & cold out, but the course was in great shape. Challenging holes with 20mph winds. Our group is looking forward to playing again when it's 70 & sunny. Incredible layout & an experience every Midwest golfer needs to enjoy. Pints n burgers in the pub were top notch as well. Slainte to Mistwood!
PACE: Went out early and moved so well I caught the grounds crew (nice guys). I've played here when the pace is slow. Given its popularity/difficulty it was nice to come in under 4 hours, but isn't something I would expect.
CONDITIONS: Greens were aerated a few days before I played, BUT the course called and left me a voicemail informing me of this. Classy move, thank you! Mistwood is always in great shape... go enjoy!
STAFF: So they called me to inform me the greens had been aerated. After catching up to them the grounds crew was friendly and accomodating. The starter was very helpful as well. Great service all around!
VALUE: It costs a few dollars more than your typical course, but given the quality of the course and the quality of their range/practice facilities, go aheard sn splurge.
LAYOUT: Holes 14 thru 16 are the ones you'll remember, but holes 1 thru 13 are great too. It would be nice to see some of the trees around 17 and 18 just fall over. :)
Love this course!
This is a great golf course and would play it more frequently if it was closer to where I live. Staff is awesome, the course is pretty, and in good shape. I would definitely recommend it.
Checks all the boxes
Highly recommend Mistwood. They want you to have a country club experience and they deliver on all fronts. 4 stars and recommend. I deducted a star because we were waiting on every tee box from 5th hole on. Ranger did his best to keep things moving but our round was at .least 4.5 hours Our foursome had balls ending up in divots 4 times. Course just gets way to much play and they have so many members now it's difficult to get a decent tee time. The locker room for a club of this caliber is very small....has one shower and the carpet in that areas is a gross smelly sopping wet mess.
Great Golf
The course is a gem and would recommend for all to play it. Looking for a place that has great putting green as well as driving range and chipping area then look no further. Great golf course with a wonderful staff that tends to your every need!
What a hidden Gem
The first time I played this last year I thought wow what a beautiful place but what a hard course. Then i played it again after knowing where the trouble is and it was fantastic. Greens are great. It feels like a Country club. We teed off at 3 pm and finished in just under 4 hours. The course is much easier the second time you play. I swear it feels like you are in England when you pull in. Great facilities. We stayed and ate at the restaurant. Great food and many draft beers to choose from. We are definitely coming back to play more.
Great course. Great service.
A very challenging course.
Lots of water.
Undulating fairways.
It’s important to keep it in the fairways. Most holes are lined with tall grass.
There are deep sod bunkers at some holes so be sure to bring your sand game.
Very challenging.
You do have a choice of tees so even short hitters have a chance.
My favorite in the Chicago area.
Full bar and restaurant with great food and a fine selection of frosty cold beverages.
Great condition
Fun course but extremally tight for some players. This was the first time playing Mistwood. I would enjoy playing again now that I know where the trouble is located and proper club selection.
Beautiful course in great shape
Course was in very good condition, despite a very rainy, cold week prior. Staff is friendly and helpful. I play here often (at least 8 times a season). The pace was good the day we played, not much waiting around. Moderate difficulty. Wind was very challenging on that day.
Great Course!!
The course was in great shape. The day was pretty windy so felt like I missed out on how amazing of a course Mistwood is but you could tell the work that went into building this phenomenal golf course. I would definitely go back on another day.
