Value Golf!
Deer Run is a tree-lined, hilly golf course sitting just above the Mississippi River in Hamilton, IL. At just over 6000 yards, it seems short on the scorecard, but many doglegs, small ponds, streams and groves of trees take driver out of your hands, making the course play longer than the yardage would indicate.
The course was originally a 9 hole layout, with the back 9 added in the 1990s. As you play the course you can clearly see the difference between the front and back 9s. The front 9 is a bit more open, and the greens, while sloped, are generally sloped from back to front. The back 9 has more undulating greens and is definitely more demanding tee-to-green. There are also some longer walks between holes on the back 9.
Playing the course in early March, the conditions were still coming out of winter. However, I could tell that the turf is healthy and I expect that the playing conditions would be really good in the summer.
The staff at the course was friendly, and at only $16 to walk 18 holes, Deer Run is a great value. It is a difficult walk, but not unmanageable. I would play it again, but it's not my favorite style of golf course. It's definitely a course worth trying once.
My favorite hole is the par 4 fourth hole. It's relatively short on the card, so with an aggressive line, it's possible to get close to the green. A less courageous drive still leaves you with a short iron to a perched green. A very fair and fun hole.
