2 Distinct 9's
Elwood is a decent mid-tier value course. The 9's are different, with the front being the older, classic style, and the back newer with more modern touches. The front goes back and forth a bit, but does have some sneaky holes like a 460+ par 4 and 580ish par 5 (from the tips). The back has some nice modern touches as it goes around a small neighborhood, though the houses are not close to play. #10 reminded me of #1 at Purgatory a bit. Really liked the 11-15 stretch of holes.
The major problem here though is field/crabgrass. It has a bit too much of it, especially on most of the tee boxes. Fairways are a little patchy as well, so I wouldn't recommend playing the ball down here. The greens are very small, but in great shape and rolled true. Some had sneaky undulations to them as well. They were small enough that you needed to be hitting the approach shots well, or have your A-chipping game. Sand was hit and miss, some fine others were mud.
It's not ever going to live up to the courses down the road (Purgatory and Bear Slide), nor should it. But it's better than anything you can find in Anderson, or the Tipton muni, and the layout has more character than Fox Prairie or either Pebble Brook course in Noblesville (FP is usually in a little better shape than this though - Pebble was in rough shape recently). It won't knock your socks off, but at its price point, its an enjoyable round of golf and may surprise you a bit like it did to me. Played it as a single in 1:45 as well, which has not happened anywhere else this busy summer.
The back nine I find challenging mini sand traps water that I find adds difficulty
The back nine I find challenging mini sand traps water that I find adds difficulty, I also feel the ground crew are very courteous and I think they do an excellent job. I personally find the front nine pretty easy however I’ve only been playing golf about 3 1/2 to 4 years I’m not a good player but I enjoy playing on this course.I also find Jake in the clubhouse to be very courteous and professional.
This course was money well spent.
Greens were in GREAT condition.
Only thing I would have them focus on are the Blue tee boxes. Needed some maintenance . There were some over hanging trees between blue tees and whites that made it a bit more challenging to hit off the tee.
A great value
A great course friendly staff I especially like the back nine to me it’s a little more challenging than the front but both are maintained very well I try to play at least a couple of times a week
Value
The front nine are not the nicest holes, but they get you warmed up for the back 9 which are incredible. For the money you spend for the course it’s amazing. Workers are always extremely nice and fun to interact with. New favorite course
Fun course
Front 9 was ok pretty flat and wide open, back 9 was a lot more challenging, I’ll be back for more.
Surprised
Nice course. The front 9 was just like any municipal course (close tee boxes/hole locations/side by side fairways). The back nine was really surprising! Totally different course. Great holes/views. Wide open and challenging. Totally worth a play
Good Test
Great old front nine and challenging newer back. Greens we're very good. Firm and dry. Enjoyed it.
A great day in October on the golf course
A great day in October on the golf course, This was the second time that I was able to play This particular course . I found the staff to be polite and professional also the clubhouse and restroom facilities were immaculate yes I would recommend this chorus to anyone I personally found the back nine to be more challenging than the front if I were to make a suggestion it would be to furnish A small map of the court layout or add a few directional as for a first time users it can be confusing, I feel the fairways tea boxes and greens are very well maintained there are a lot of sand traps but that only adds to the challenge thank you Elwood or doing a great job bringing this course back up to power
Great value
Challenging course, recently reopened, nice layout, a couple greens still not matured and fairways were dry because of lack of rain. But a challenging layout at a great price. This could be a great course with some TLC.
Play the back first if you can
Course is getting there, hopefully these downpours will stop and it just rains. Back was very good, unique with hills, play it first if you can...the front is a little boring but a good warm up.
Not great but good.
The greens were the saving factor. They only had the back nine open which stunk but it was in pretty good shape. The scenery isn’t much. The traps were well placed. Not a bad practice round course if you are close. Don’t travel to play this course.
Odd experience here
I'm not really sure what is going on with this place. Any GolfNow tee time you book can't be trusted at all. I had an 8:03 tee time, and no one showed up to the facility until 8:10. I had to prove my rate with the GolfNow confirmation email, which they accepted. The old front nine is now literally a cow pasture, but I went out all by myself to a newer nine built only a few years ago, it's a pretty nice layout. I played that nine twice, and got all the way around it once before anyone else showed up. The greens are in good shape, but they are teeny tiny, so it's challenging. They apparently only mow once a week or less by the time September rolls around. The grass on the fairways, tees and greens were way too long. If you want to get in a little practice round, this is a good place. If you want to have a serious round, I'd go elsewhere because you really don't know what to expect on any given day here.
PDV
GolfNow info incorrect! Course had no info? Pro Shop said they weren't notified, but honored reservation based on email confirmation! Fortunately, there was no-one on course, so we got off with no problem & played quickly! Enjoyable layout with thick rough!! Bring lots of balls!
Transition
Course converted to just a 9 hole course. Upkeep was weak. Ownership and the direction this course will go is uncertain. At $10 for the round, was priced appropriately.
Two types of courses
This course provides each player two distinct types of courses. The first nine holes are relatively flat with nice greens. The back nine is designed in the "Links" style, giving the player a more difficult challenge. The cart paths need work, but the course was in very good shape. It was an enjoyable round of golf.
I have to be honest II truly believe this is a hidden Gem ???? 10 through 18 is links style golf in 1 through 9 is traditional. . Greens on the back 9 are in Great shape. Front side greens are Definitely coming around. . 1st week of June the front side opened up for play. . Played it in Thursday Night League. . Then played the front the following week and the greens had great improvement. . By the end of July the front side greens should be perfect once again???. Stay and play is coming 2020. . I think all the negative comments will be diminished by the end of July. . Deffently a hidden Gem. 19th Hole is a Relaxing Atmosphere with Horse Shoe Sunking Bar with Views of Front Side Golf. . Should be on everybody's bucket list to play in central Indiana. .
