Sankaty Head Golf Club - or is it Heaven?
I just went up and played Sankaty… at first, part of the thrill is the journey to get there… a four hour car ride, followed by an hour fast ferry to Nantucket Island, then you’re back in a taxi for another 20 minutes as the excitement builds…. It’s all worth it as you’re walking into the pro shop…4 hours later it was the most beautiful course i have ever played. You’re perched up on top of a hill over looking the course when you come out of the pro shop. While getting ready to tee off at the 1st hole, you can see the Sankaty lighthouse red and white with black top just behind what will be your 5th hole. The lighthouse dominates the front nine and you will continue to stalk it the entire day. This links style course has beautiful fairways and lots of sand bunkers. If you hit fairways , you will be rewarded with huge greens to hit your approach shots into, however, if you miss these fairways, the entire course is all lined with fescue and you will have to hit from these tough locations. When you get to the greens, they are absolutely stunning. The undulations on the greens make them a tough test! They have the subtlest of subtle movements. In a true links style, you can run your shots up to the green, but If you go to far, they will slope off the back of the greens and down into a collection area, thus punishing you as it’s difficult to get up and down on the turtle backside of the greens. It’s truly a masterpiece… with the wind coming hard off the Atlantic Ocean, this course can be played totally different every day of the week depending on which way the wind is blowing. The course designer obviously knew this, and this makes it that much more special. Play Sankaty if you get the chance!
