Very Pleasantly Surprised. Shot 77!
I haven’t played this course since 2018 and I wanted to give it another shot. A few holes in, I was immediately glad I’d come. The tee boxes, while a little bit of crabgrass, were cut very nicely. The greens I remember, used to be just average, but these were rolling FAST after the morning dew was gone. All of them were in great condition. Bunkers were in good shape, nice fluffy beach sand and they have rakes in there despite COVID which not many other courses are doing. It’s a pretty short course at 6051 yards, but for that distance and being a par 70, this course packs a PUNCH! TOUGH PAR THREES! Long (Hole 10 is 230!!!), uphill, and a lot of trouble. A couple long par fours. Hole 14 measures 446 yards. Par fives are run of the mill. Course is tight in some spots, especially on the back 9. A few holes you can’t hit driver on the front 9 so the course plays long. Greens keeper was a very nice guy and he always turned his mower off when he got near me when I was about to hit, helped me find my ball once too! Probably almost hit him (sorry about that!). Price was good. Good walking course but it can get a little hilly on the front 9. Will definitely be coming back. Way to go Glen Oaks!
Friendly greens
Not a long course but trouble if long over greens. Fairways tight on few holes but friendly landing areas. #1 Handicap hole Par4 on front side is challenging. Fairly large greens receptive to shots. Not a lot of bunkers. Tough Par3 holes. Not long but can be tough. Staff is the best!!! Green fees good.
Somewhat overrated
Played this course many times but only because you can purchase 20 dollar vouchers a couple times a year. I would never pay there standard 40 something price. Have definitely seen a drop of in course maintenance. Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen an uncompacted raked bunker. We generally just take the ball out as their usually not even playable. On the positive side it’s a decent enough layout that keeps you interested. Have had a couple instances where we were playing at the same time outings were taking place and were forced to listen to boom boxes all the way around the course by your typical 20 somethings who seemed to think it was appropriate to mix a rock concert and Golf. My complaints fell on deaf ears by both the ranger and those in the clubhouse. In a nutshell I wouldn’t be playing here without a voucher.
Course is well taken care of.
Good course with good designs... very nice place to play.
I will never again play at this course
1- Greens were extremely slow and leaves had not been removed from most of the fairways.
2- There were two 4-some ahead of us. After each shot, they would argue about whose ball it was and wasted at least 5 to 10 minutes after each shot.
3- despite complaining about this to the staff, no one asked these guys to move along faster and to respect other golfers behind them.
4- A staff with mower took the flag out of one of the holes and started mowing the green as we waited for him for about six minutes. He did not care!
Great value great practice surprising challenge
well maintained and just enough challenge to get your skills back up;
Great day of golf
Great weather really liked the course staff were very helpful
Good bargain
For the price on golf now it is a good track that gets better with when it is under $20-. Paired up on Number one with a couple of guys in there late eighties and another gentleman. One guy was walking, the oldest one and he was about 89. Hit the ball off the box 20 yards. The starter was my salvation along with the other single. He came up to the box and told to hit and leave the old guys behind. Thanks guy.
this course is wide open
This course gives the players that don't play often a chance at shooting a good round because of how open it is. Very few difficult holes.
Decent course
Unfortunately, we were unable to play all 18 holes because the starter sent us to the back 9 first and forgot a golf outing was coming in. There was also a huge hole on the 9th hole green. Overall the course was just fair.
A return to the Past
The course was better 10 years ago. It needs some edge work now which thankfully is in progress now.
Good but...
Course was in good shape, pace of play was actually pretty good despite being busy. problem was at check in. It took 20 minutes and about 15 people were lined up. I had prepaid and only needed cart key which they charge a $1 deposit. They need to get rid of that policy since it slows things down. Also, they need to have more than one person available to check people in. I blame the manager who needs to have a better handle on the process. Enjoyed the group I was paired up with and value for the money is incredible.
nice course, slow play
I'd play here more often if I could get the round in under 5 hours. The course is nice with some interesting holes, some challenges and some opportunities to score. There's no driving range and the practice green is located a long way from the first tee or the club house. Part of the slowdown comes from the slow service in the grill at the turn.
Good course
Good course. 2 groups were really slow and weren't letting people go in front of them. Had to skip a hole on the back and finished 4 holes then can back. They were just teeing off on the next hole.
Course was nice though. I will go again
Don't plan on getting in a normal round
Let me say, I have heard the course was challenging with long Par 3's, and in good shape. All of that was true, now let's get to the rest.
Pros: Challenging holes, good condition overall, fair price.
Cons: PACE OF PLAY. If you can't get out on a Friday before 8 a.m., then forget it. There are so many hacks out here that it is unbearable. We think that a guy going down the 2nd hole hit my ball, Didn't see a ranger doing their job until hole 13 when I think they realized how SLOW it was going. Then, the ranger challenged us and stated "why are you playing the blacks?" To my response "Because, the blacks are only 6,082, which isn't that long." Myself and one of the other 4 people I was paired with were pretty good golfers, the other two were pretty mediocre. But us 4 were standing around waiting on the twosome in front of us, AND the threesome in front of them. We were not the problem.
After 17 holes and 4 hours and 20 minutes later, I drove in, skipping 18. Almost a 5 hour round on a Friday morning is unacceptable. May not be returning.
Never Again
The pace of play was awful, fairways had not been cut in a couple of days.
Rain
Always good to play Glen Oaks because the rates are always Great. It just seems that all 3 rounds I played here have been in the rain or after heavy rain. Only complaint I ever had was back to back par 3's, 16-17. Real estate constraints. But it is still a fun course.
Good course
Course condition was very good and not so easy if you play from back tee.
The only frustrated thing was that I took 4.5 hours for 18 holes round.
1 suggestion. The actual yardage of Par 3 hole was slightly different from indication, so actual yardage on somewhere of tee ground would be helpful.
Don't know what public courses you are playing that are less than 4 hrs 20 mins for 17 holes?
All public courses have hacks, you get what you pay for. The cheaper the course the bigger the hacks.
