The Legend at Shanty Creek

About
The Legend Course is one of four championship golf courses at Shanty Creek in Bellaire, one of northern Michigan's most popular golfing destinations. The Legend might be the most well known of the four since it is the club's Arnold Palmer design. It has been ranked as one of the top four resort courses in the country and the best resort course in the Midwest. It is definitely a challenge but Palmer incorporated generous fairways and true-rolling greens that allow golfers to play to their handicap. The golf course features elevated tee areas and slightly raised, heavily bunkered putting complexes. Water hazards also come into play on five holes. The 12th is one of the most challenging holes and also one of the most scenic. There is water to the left and a treacherous bunker waiting on the right.

Nice staff, fairways had fungus, tricky layout
Checked in early and staff was friendly, provided range balls and got us out 30 minutes early. Played this course about 10x, tricky and challenging . Multiple Fairways on back nine had some sort of fungus but greens were in good shape. Pace of play slowed on back nine. . We were 2 some playing behind another twosome.. a group of 24 in front was slow and Marshall was pushing them along . Back nine took 2.5 hours - painful . For $60 I still felt it was good value . Prefer Schuss and Cedar River though .
Typical resort disappointment
My wife and I played The Legend at Shanty Creek on Monday, August 19. I mention the day of the week as you would not expect a Monday to be so ridiculously slow.
Tee times every 10 minutes is begging for back ups, especially at a resort. 2:39 minutes for the front 9 is not acceptable. We waited on nearly every hole and on every shot for the final 9 holes. The foursome in front never once considered letting us through. A Marshall would have helped speed things up but not once did we see one.
We finally gave up after waiting 12 minutes (timed) on the 18th tee while the group in front looked for lost tee shots less than 100 hundred yards from the tee and quit. A perfect end? Wait there was more. Upon arrival at the bag drop we were greeted by an employee who wiped down clubs, held her hand out for a tip and then we carried our own bags to our car. Not the level of service expected at this resort. We won't be coming back and strongly encourage anyone considering The Legend at Shanty Creek to reconsider their choice. There are several other options in this price range providing a significantly better experience.

Greens got me today
Have played here multiple times and always thought ti to be the jewel of the Shanty/Schuss collection of courses, but found the course conditions to be just average. The tee boxes were in need of some attention.
It was still an enjoyable round and course.
Nice Course / Need a Marshal
5 hr round. No Marshal to move the 4-some along that were causing the backup. At least 2 open holes in front of them.
Golf now saved us 36$ from this round
Walked in on a tee time asked how much it was. Staff said 100$ I said but you have 15 open tee times between now and the next two hours. We can go to golf now to get a cheaper rate. They said we would still be charged for tee time I laughed went outside booked a time on your site for 20 minutes later sent my guy in to register and get recipient for starter.
Golf course is very well maintained with fantastic greens.
Beautiful course
The course was breathtaking and in excellent condition. We played at a timely pace without rush and its expansive layout allowed for groups in front and behind us to stay at pace also. Fairways and greens were in great condition, greens were super fast. The views from many tee boxes were outstanding and we'd play this course again for sure!
What happened?
I had played the Legend a few times 14-15 years ago and it was a nice resort course, well kept (with some underlying drainage issues). Now the course is a mess. The bunkers are filled with gravel, the fairways were very inconsistent (some were mowed evenly, and some were not.) My wife commented that this was about the worst maintained golf course we've played in the last few years. The started raved about how good the conditions were. After the round I was asked how it was and when I told them our impressions they dismissed them because "they had some rain recently."

Nice course / facilities need updates
We loved the course and the greens were in excellent shape. The club house is dated and cart paths are in disrepair, but playing the course was worth it.
Great course but lots of soft, wet areas
Played this course a number of times. Great layout, great views. However a number of wet soft areas where carts and maintenance equipment made ruts.
Great Course
The course was in great condition because of recent rain fall. The fairways were clean, the greens were fair and quick. The fairways had ample room to hit one side or the other (who hits the middle!). From the white, a couple holes were long - 411 par four, and 510 par 5 - us old people have trouble hitting the green in regulation on the par 4. One par 5 was only 418 but needed the hits to be in the right place.
