Fun Course
Great shape. Very enjoyable and fun course to play. I will be playing
again this fall.
Nice layout. Good conditions.
Group of 8 of us played for 2 days. Overall conditions were nice. Greens were very good. Fairways and tee boxes were good overall too. Loved the layout. Plenty of room off the tee. Food offered was very good too. Only negative was no cart person on a very busy Friday/Saturday. Course was packed. We had a great time all weekend.
Just Ok
First time playing this course. The person at the front desk was kind of rude, not wearing a mask and just uninterested in providing good customer service. The course itself was ok. There are a lot of areas the grass has been diseased and brown in the fairways. The best thing about the course are the greens.
Playing in Sand Dunes- Very Nice
Solid Course among the Sand Dunes near Lake Michigan.
Awesome Practice facility with driving range with various flag targets, short game area with bunkers (sand is soft & heavy), and practice green close to the first tee.
Staff greeted us at Bag Drop and asked us if needed buckets of practice balls. Very friendly and took care of us nicely including the starter, who will come searching for you if you are late for the tee time.
One critic of the range balls, paying extra for range balls was not great when you are paying $70 for 18 holes. Paying for balls just to practice or on a discounted afternoon rate, I would have no problem, just not for the top rate.
The course is wonderfully layed out with generous fairways, short strategic holes, long holes, driveable Par 4 11th, nice variety of lengths for Par 3s & Par 5s. There are times one feels in the forest, among high grasses, and in between large sand dunes. This is a layout that both long and short hitters can play and have a great time.
Course was nice manicured though green speeds were on the slow side but they ran very true. They did have a beverage running as well.
Spend the morning playing golf and then head over to the beach in less than 5 minutes for a great enjoyable Michigan Summer Day.
Tough Course
Course is in great shape. Really tough...stay in the fairway! Greens were much slower than expected but looked great.
A Midwest Gem!
I have been playing at HawksHead since they opened several years ago. The place is great. Course was in immaculate condition. Greens were perfect. We have had a lot of rain this Spring with not so much sun/heat. Course drains well. Played twilight which means the course is wide open. Check out their restaurant and bar after your round. Really, really good food and drinks. Service at this place is A+++++. It all starts with them meeting you at your car with a golf cart to pick you up. What public course does that? 5 STARS!!
long for old guy
great course/value
need shorter tees for superseniors(80+0
0therwise a delight tp play /great lunch
Excellent Conditions.
I have played this course many times over the last ten years. I try to include it in my trips to Michigan. The conditions this year are excellent. Greens roll true and medium fast. The bunkers are well maintained too. Many courses could take a lesson from Hawkshead on bunker maintenance. A few of the bunkers had a wealth of stones in them. Luckily, I did not land in those, but I would have elected to drop out of them if I had. No need to damage a club over a shot. If they cleaned up the few with stones, I would rate the bunkers perfect.
Pace of play sometimes can be a challenge when players go looking too long for errant golf balls. Most fairways are generously wide, but a strong slice or hook will get you into trouble. Watch #10. Most players will want to hit less than driver to lay up short of the waste bunker, unless you are a strong driver, in which case you might want to try to carry the bunker. I don't think the risk/reward is in your favor to try to carry the bunker.
A very enjoyable course. I recommend it.
Fun Course
I've played Hawkshead quite a few times and would recommend it.
The layout is interesting, even though a couple of holes seem sort of jammed in where there wasn't quite enough room. But, the design doesn't go back and forth with the same type of hole over and over, which is a good thing. The fairways are pretty wide, so you don't lose too many golf balls and the greens aren't too crazy, both things make for an enjoyable round.
After the round, the clubhouse is a good place to hang out. They have surprisingly good food, cold beer and friendly service. All and all, a fun course to play.
Worth Checking Out While in W. Mich
Five stars for my experience and definitely great course conditions for the price. Kudos to the grounds keepers. In this area there are other very pricey alternatives but I will honestly say that this was a great course. It is moderately priced, there are others for less but when I was there the fairways and greens were excellent. The greens may have rolled the truest I have seen in a while(or I actually putted very well...strike that....must be the greens). They Received the ball very well, fired at the pin, not super fast but I'm sure they can rev it up if they felt compelled. It is a links layout, lots of room to land your shot but potential waste bunkers or prairie grasses if you miss your mark. I played the blue tees and it felt a little short on par 5's on the front nine. Par 3's are fairly straight forward but beware the Lake Mi air has a tendency to eat up distance. If you are in the mood for something different and not a standard MI tree lined course, this is a good option.
It is a slightly in the middle of nowhere with a small club house, I did not experience.
I can't really comment on staff but the crew assisting outside seemed very helpful and there were ranger/staff rolling around to address any concerns with pace of play or anything else.
nice
Nice course to play but lacked the wow factor. It was a links course but the sand needed to be racked. There wasn't any sand to repair divots. I walked by the proshop at the nine and the staff was having a fight. Not good. It was a 3 1/2 star course.
Another Michigan Gem
This is nice course for the value. Good layout, plenty of sand (quality sand). Course plays somewhat like links and combination of park land course. You won't be disappointed playing this course.
great course
Even though it is a public course, you will think you are a member at a top notch country club, cart kids sprinting out to your car to help with bag. Friendly pro shop staff to take care of your needs. Tremendous practice facility. Links style course, tough but fair. Great pub and restaurant to enjoy after your round.
A little paradise
Superior layout in pristine Michigan setting. Plenty of challenge to a near-classic links course. Staff is top-notch and bar/restaurant is best in area.
