Extremely difficult, but very scenic
The beauty and conditioning of this golf course make it a four-star performer, but unless you've got some serious golf skills, throw your expectations of scoring out the window. Quite frankly, there are very few bailout areas, and many misses aren't just penalized, they're either a wet or lost ball or impossible lie. The rock outcroppings are certainly another aspect of this course that's beautiful - until you hit one in the middle of the fairway and the ball bounces into oblivion. And the bunkers, of which there are many, are certainly true hazards, with many of them requiring you to take your medicine. While I agree this would be an interesting course for a major championship, mortal golfers are going to struggle here . And I'm not just talking double-digit handicaps. High singles, too. But if you feel like you're game is in shape, give it a whirl; it's a great test.
Always a beautiful golf course. Greens recently aerated so not at 100% but still great.
Beautiful Track
Beautiful layout only issue was greens had not recovered fron Aeration. Should have been discounted for conditions.
Misrepresented green condition
Called and asked about aeration. Told it took place two weeks ago and green was running smooth. Played the course the following week. The ball was not straight and bouncing. $180 per round in the afternoon is way overpriced for aerated greens. Disappointed that they did not give me an honest answer on the phone. Also bar/restaurant was closed by the time we finished at 6pm on Friday. This is not a place for quick after round drink and lack of atmosphere. Don’t expect to entertain clients or friends after a round. Probably won’t be back.
Tight and Verdant
This course has a private feel to it, from the bag handlers to the players and the pristine condition of this bad boy. The difference is in the restaurant amenities but I didn't come to eat fois gras or play tennis.
The first hole is a challenging shortish & tight par four with a marsh pond behind the green. The greens are quick and undulating and you can ruin your round before you begin with a 7 on this short hole if you don't take the speed seriously. Anyway, it's pricey for a public course so make sure someone else is paying for you (and you lose some money to them).
Beautiful Pete Dye Course
I was looking around for 18 holes at public courses on relatively short notice over the 4th of July weekend. Found very few options, realize in retrospect that the greens fees at Pound Ridge probably help increase availability. That said, this is an absolutely gorgeous course, on par with Pelican Hill in CA in terms of layout and maintenance. Flawless greens, nice walk through terrain that makes maximum use of New England stones. Highly recommended. I did not access any off-course amenities, so not rated.
