Boring, but very convenient and course is well-tended
Aside from somewhat narrow fairways and long-ish rough, this is a pretty easy course, even for a duffer like me. Very flat, very straight, very few hazards, and very forgiving and level greens. It's also very walkable (as golf should be played) on a pretty compact layout. It's also worth noting that the course was in great condition despite a very wet summer. They do a great job of aerating the greens and low spots so there's no mud or marshy spots, even on the first hole which literally borders a huge marsh and the Great South Bay.
Meh
I know it’s April and it’s still cold but conditions could be a lot better. Almost every greenside bunker had lips that were just dirt and sand. The layout was just boring to be honest. Many straight holes that were tight and lined with trees. We almost got hit with a ball at least 6 times which shows how tight the course is. I really can’t tell you the holes that stand out because nothing was memorable. Just seems like the squeezed 18 into an area that could only hold 15. But I can’t be mad for $51 because I’m not a Suffolk resident. Eisenhower is the same price and red isn’t even open yet
South shore
Need to play this course when it’s not too hot, otherwise bring a lot of Miskito spray
Pretty good course for a public course
I have played here many times and the course is in fairly good shape except for the few holes that have drainage work going on. Greens are in pretty good shape except for hole number 6 which has a temporary green. Greens have improved over the last 2 years. Flat course, good to walk and fairways were in pretty good shape. This course is usually packed but due to the COVID-19 the pace of play has been great and the course is not packed. In normal times this course is packed on the weekends and not enjoyable to play during prime time due to slow pace of play. Only thing I don't like about this course is that there usually is no cart girl and halfway house is closed most of the time. Also lacks facilities on the course except for one bathroom by hole number 6 which sometimes is in really bad shape. The course is not an extremely difficult course but there is almost always wind conditions because it is right on the water. Windy conditions present a lot of the time.
Great course
Great course, especially for a public county course. Great value and great views of the water on several holes.
First time playing
Ground is hard. Fairways okay shape. Sand traps suck. Tee boxes okay. Greens slow and bumpy. Good value.
