About
I play courses and I write about them. At present, I've played 286 golf courses in 23 US states and Ontario, CN, including 8 courses in the 2017-2018 Golf Digest Top 100 in America and 13 courses from the 2017-2018 Golf Digest Top 100 Public. My reviews do not include critiques of clubhouses, bathrooms, showers, staff, or related items (most of the time). I am a tough critic of courses and I rarely give out 5 star overall reviews; the precedent I've set is that a course needs to be ranked roughly Top 100 in the nation by a major publication (and deserve that ranking) in order for me to give 5 stars.

Played On 05/06/2019Four stars, five stars, I don't know
It's close to 5 stars. It might be. I've only rated 4 courses on here at 5 stars and those 4 are better than this. On my personal scale, I say this course is a 7, which puts it ahead of a few courses in the Golf Digest Top 100 and one of the 15 best courses I've ever played. I don't know how that translates to Golf Advisor stars. Moving on...
I saw the course on October when it was being renovated. The improvement from then to now is stunning. In October, the bunkers were bare, now they're perfect. The greens were growing in, now they're stellar. Fairways are smooth and uniform. Fairways are draining great. Clubhouse is great. Staff is great. Overall, course is great.
Stumpy Lake Golf Course
Played On 12/03/2018Don't Play After a Rain
So, I feel bad for the superintendent, I really do. The course conditions are surely not a reflection of his hard work, but stuff beyond his control...stuff that I'm sure he's tried to fix and has been stymied.
The conditions were terrible. 13 of 18 tees have little to no grass on them, causing them to be nothing but mud after a rain two days earlier. When I say mud, I mean the stuff that comes up an inch when you step on it, not just damp ground. This is because the course has too many trees blocking out sunlight for the tees. Beyond that, the course had extensive standing water in every fairway. The course has drainage systems in place, but they certainly do not work. It was difficult to walk the course because of how much standing water and mud was all over the course. The greens were in fair shape and I suppose the layout is pretty good with decent variety, but the conditions were so poor that it's hard to tell. I'd probably recommend playing here, but not within a week or so of any rainfall. I feel like conditions such as these are things that the course should tell a person about on the phone if he or she calls to make a tee time/check on availability.
Tobacco Road Golf Club
Played On 11/24/2018El Camino
I took a quick look around the El Camino course on the front nine on the way out of Pinehurst. The course was in great shape given the heavy rains that we'd gotten in the area for the past 10 hours. Everything drained fairly well within 30-45 minutes of the rain stopping. Fairways maintained very well, greens smooth. Always a course to stop by and play if you're in the area.
Pinehurst Resort & Country Club - No. 2
Played On 11/23/2018Five Stars...I Guess??
Great variety in the par 5s and 4s. Par 3 holes are slightly repetitive in yardage if the wind isn't blowing. Turf conditions great, greens rolled perfectly. Great course but I was slightly unimpressed for whatever reason.
Midland Country Club
Played On 11/23/2018Solid Nine
Everything I expected. Couple really cool par 5s, interesting par 3s, up and down set of par 4s. Perfect place to go for an afternoon emergency nine.
Cape Fear Country Club
Played On 11/12/2018As Good as Expected
Course is really good, has great flow through the round. Incredible variety on the par 3s; oddly enough the best one isn't a Donald Ross original hole. 18 is a really cool par 4 that gives great opportunity for birdie to end the round; also not a Ross original. Overall, a really cool place and certainly one to play if you can get access.
Elizabeth Manor Country Club
Played On 11/08/2018Better Than I Remembered
The course was better than I remembered. Really good variety in the holes, certainly in distance variety. Conditions were as good as can be expected with fall season and also a tough summer. Pace was really good, I played as a single, caught a bunch of groups after 12 holes, played slower, but looked at my watch and realized that I still played the last 6 holes in about 1 hour 5 minutes. A lot of fun.
Sewells Point Golf Course
Played On 10/31/2018As Expected
Fairways were a little longer than normal. Greens were smooth. Pace was good. Exactly what I expected when I went out.
The Lamberts Point Golf Course
Played On 10/26/2018New Features Revealed Every Time
I played the course this past Friday for the 5th or 6th time. As I was walking up the 3rd fairway, I looked over at the 6th fairway and saw a perfect landing area for a better approach to the 6th green. It's always a mark of a good course that the features are revealed over time rather than just being perfectly apparent on one play. As always, great variety in the holes and the conditions are improving. Hopefully they'll put some more money into the course, it could be stellar.
The Lamberts Point Golf Course
Played On 10/19/2018Conditions Improving
The greens are much healthier now than at the end of the summer since the temps have dropped. Still very soft, but much smoother and faster than before. Great value for the money.
Royal New Kent Golf Club
Played On 10/05/2018Undergoing a Renovation
There's a lot of great work going on at Royal New Kent. Completely new greens that look incredible. Bunkers being completely renovated. Fairway drainage pipes being completely renovated. Once everything is completed in the Spring, this place will, once again, be something truly special in the world of golf. Certainly Top 10 in Virginia and close to Top 100 in America.
The Club At Viniterra
Played On 10/05/2018One of the Best Rees Jones Designs Out There
From the proper tees, the course is not extremely difficult. The difficulty comes in the length. But the fairways are generous and well maintained. They're building a new clubhouse currently, so that should help with "atmosphere" however you define that; doesn't effect my review one way or the other. Good variety in the holes, very good conditions, very scenic. Top quality and certainly recommended.
Riverfront Golf Club
Played On 10/02/2018One of the Better Public Options in the Area
Excellent public option in the Tidewater. The course conditions were great. Some holes are compromised by housing, 8 especially. But overall, a very nice course.
Sewells Point Golf Course
Played On 08/28/2018Fair
The fairways are pretty tight, but they're kept in good condition. The greens were also in good condition as well though you could still see the punch holes from aeration. It's an average course for an average price.
Kempsville Greens Golf Course
Played On 08/15/2018Needs to Cut Down Some Trees
The course is OK. A lot of tee boxes have difficulty keeping grass because of too many trees. The 15th hole is foolish from the current tee box since the trees overhang and make a shot with any sort of elevation impossible. Overall, the course is fair and OK, but is silly in spots. For $25, it should generally meet expectations.
Ocean View Municipal Golf Course
Played On 08/11/2018A Lot of Fun
Nice municipal course. The fairway conditions and bunkers are in less than ideal shape because of the terrible weather. It's been difficult to mow and such in the area recently due to heavy rains. But the conditions are certainly good for the price. Course has some cool holes with great variety.
Eagle Haven Golf Course
Played On 08/01/2018Solid
Course was good overall. The fairways are incredibly tight in places; I wonder if that is because the tremendous rainfall in the area has prevented them from mowing like normal. But the 7th fairway is only 12 or 15 steps wide in the landing area. Greens were in decent shape, probably as good as can be expected given the heavy rains combined with high temperatures. Fairways were good. Has some really cool holes.
The Lamberts Point Golf Course
Played On 07/23/2018Solid Layout
I really enjoy the layout. The site is a difficult one, but the holes have great variety. Very cool uphill, skyline par 5 to open the round and some very good holes after that. The conditions were tough. Hard to evaluate the greens since it had rained so much the previous few days. They were as soft as I'd expect. Had some weeds in the greens, that's tough. Also some bare spots in the fairways without grass. Difficult to give that a pass. I'd play it again, but the conditions suffer. Not sure why.
Chesapeake Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2018It's OK
The course is OK. Decent greens. Good value for the money. I'd play it again, but it wouldn't be my first choice. I'll leave it at that.

John,
I hope will give us another try
City of Portsmouth Bide-A-Wee Golf Course
Played On 07/17/2018Good, not Great
The fairways were nicely maintained, greens were fair, probably about as good as bent grass can be in this area in peak summer conditions. Parts of the course are just odd, several tees are either closed or in terrible condition due to being covered with trees (6, 8, 11, 16, 17, 18 come to mind readily) and a few holes have trees that block the tee shots (6 and 11). The 7th hole is scenic...but has a small green with hazards left and right on a 220 yard hole. It's a 400 yard walk from 17 green to 18 tee. I'd play it again, it's a fair value for the money, but overall, it's pretty "meh."
