Tale of Two Nines

For anyone who has played Pembroke Pines before, you know it is truly the tale of two nines. Front is on an old cow pasture so it plays wide open, and the back is cut through dense forest, so accuracy is key. Front is very straightforward, and has some good scoring opportunities. Back is very quirky (sometimes to the point of being ridiculous/unfair), so it certainly keeps you on your toes. The course will make you hit every club in your bag, and with some great tee time deals, it makes the place a great value. Easy to get to, playable for all levels, but tends to get backed up, even on weekdays. Certainly a Concord-area course to try.

Rugged Mountain Coure

A pretty solid mountain course in a hard-to-reach area of NH. You almost need four-wheel drive just to reach the course (5-mile dirt road run up to the entrance) but it is certainly a scenic area. Good amount of elevation on the front and the back, but the yardage stakes in the fairway give a good sense of what club to hit off the tee and into the green. Greens were in good shape, but conditions get a little shaggy once you venture even slightly off the fairway. Could have used a ranger during my round as I got stuck behind a rather rude fivesome, which made for a longer day than necessary. Overall is a good course to try, but there are better mountain courses in the state.

Good value NH golf

Loudon is a sneaky nice track not far from downtown Concord. Not much length here at all, so mid-handicappers can play from the tips and not worry about reaching greens in regulation. Greens were in spectacular shape, and fairways were good despite lack of rain. Tee boxes had a few odd slopes, but were pretty decent for the most part. There's enough elevation to make for some interesting shots, and a number of good scoring holes, so if you can keep your ball in the fairway, you can attack the course pretty well. Overall a fun course and they have some outstanding online deals if you look for them.

Tight, Scenic Course with Elevation

This is one of my favorite courses in the Concord area. While there is some room to miss off the tee, if you go too far off course, you won't find your ball. There are some nice elevation changes on this course, making for a handful of dramatic tee shots and approaches. The greens were in excellent condition, rolling very true for a public course. If you're up for a true New England golf experience and a good, but not overwhelming test, this is a great choice.

Scenic Course, Great Challenge

I was the first one off the tee on a fall saturday, and it was one of the best golfing experiences I've had. They make no secret about the course being a "ball eater," and that accuracy is way more important that power. The only way to play the course is with a course guide (I had it free on my phone or you can purchase one in the pro shop), as it has yardages for landing zones off the tee, layups and into the greens. I hit driver twice all day and that was all that I needed. Good iron players will have success here, and if you play the course the way its meant to be played and don't try to overpower it, you will have fun. Bring a few extra balls because you'll lose a few even on a good round. Overall, this is a very scenic course with friendly people everywhere who enjoy the challenge that comes with playing The Shattuck. Highly recommended, and I'll be back soon as well.

Fun course

Rockland isn't the longest or toughest layout you'll find, but you'll certainly get your golf fix in. The front nine had a bit of an "up and back" flow to it, but differing greens help to keep the holes feeling a little different from one another. Back nine is more scenic and quirkier but still feels like part of the course. Overall a good experience and a closing hole that puts a dramatic finish to the of the day with a forced carry to a par 3.

Tight course, good New England feel

Played this course just past the peak of the fall and had a good time. The abundance of trees meant plenty of leaves on the fairways and greens, but that's to be expected in a fall round. Tight fairways with not a lot of room to miss puts a premium on accurate drives, and any bit of local knowledge you can get from the website/other golfers will help you with some tricks the course can play yardage-wise. Nothing fancy for a clubhouse, but has snacks, beers and place to sit if you want to linger before/after a round. Overall a very scenic course, good challenge, not overly long but not overflowing with amenities.

One of the Best

Played this course Sept. 1, 2013 and had a fantastic day. Pro shop is well-stocked and staff is super friendly. The starter wished us luck as we teed off on #1 and we proceeded to have a great round. The course was in great shape despite taking on some rain the night before; fairways were wide and well kept and the greens rolled well. There is a bit of room for error off the tee on this track, but there are a number of well-placed fairway bunkers that can cost you a stroke. You can see most of the bunkers from the tee, so you know where to go, even if its your first time. You can enjoy views of the Mt. Washington Hotel from a number of different spots on the course, and the par 3 14th, which is 200 yards of carry downhill over a fescue-filled ravine, will truly test your mettle. Overall, one of the best courses I have played in the Northeast, and the early-morning GolfNow deals are a great way to play this track.

Nice course close to Boston

Played this course midweek with a great GolfNow deal (around 50% off) and had a great time. Staff was friendly but not omnipresent and the cart girl came by three times to check on us on a hot day, which was nice. The course has a very solid, old-school layout but like any muni track, it gets beat up. Tee boxes and greens were actually in pretty good shape, but don't expect a great lie every time you're in the fairway. Course is pretty open so you don't always pay for mistakes off the tee, and with a pretty short length, you can score well. Heads up for a couple blind tee shots that can be frustrating, and while you can find yardage markers in the fairway, there are no maps for the holes on the scorecard or hole markers. Absolutely a good play with a GolfNow deal, and you'll definitely get your golf fix at Putterham.

Great mountain course

Played Owl's Nest Saturday, June 22, 2013 and it was a great first experience. Lots of room on the fairways and shaping helps bring errant drives back into play. Greens are quick and roll true and the elevation changes on the back nine make for some dramatic shots. Very friendly staff and a great finishing hole that brings you back to the clubhouse - a great place to grab a cold one after a round.
