Shepherd's Crook Golf Course
Played On 08/15/2020Forest Preserve.....?
Spectacular layout in northern lake county with a taste of the best woods and links style architecture. 6800 yards allows plenty of options off the tee. Challenging holes set beautifully in the existing landscape with plenty of elevation gain, blind shots and....style. Think harborside with...trees. $60 with a cart, played 18 holes in about three hours on a Saturday evening. Staff friendly and helpful. Like a secret only a few know about. Best municipal course I’ve ever played, bar none. Can not recommend enough.
George W Dunne National Golf Course
Played On 08/08/2020Big Boy Course
7300 yards par 72. Challenging championship caliber layout with water in play on at least 8 holes. Requires every club in the bag. Forest preserve course managed by Billy Casper. No issues at all with staff who were friendly. Conditions were very good though greens a bit slow. Fairways in very good shape. Rough was penal but fair. Nice warmup area. Great PUBLIC facility! I’ll be back...
White at Gleneagles Country Club
Played On 05/30/2020Good event course
Two courses out in the burbs. Busy but organized and efficient starter. Great course condition though rough a little long due to recent rains. Course not hard but straightforward and fair. Greens true and fast. Mellow relaxed vibe. Carts available despite covid. Pace slow but manageable. A bargain at $30 with cart. Well worth the drive from downtown!
Wolf Creek Golf Club
Played On 02/10/2020Spectacular bucket list course
Long golf weekend in Vegas. Drove the 90 minutes to satisfy my curiosity. Wow...spectacular course carved out of a canyon with some of the most memorable tee shots I’ve ever seen. Like chambers bay but more elevation change and more compartmentalized. Gas carts needed due to climbing...a chairlift may have been a better idea. Most tees elevated, some by more that 150 feet. Tight layout but holes largely separated by canyons. Layout was fair. Not a tricked out target golf course, you just need to clear a mini Grand Canyon to reach the fairway. In a word....fun! Fairways immaculate. Greens rolled true but not ridiculous. I played like a triple handicapper but I don’t care. I hit a 200 yard downhill tee shot over an exposed rock outcropping onto the green and two putted for birdie. I can’t remember which hole...they’re all that good. I was so entranced Iforgot to take pictures. highly recommend it...worth the drive!
Deerpath Golf Course
Played On 06/15/2020Sorry...spoiler alert.
Best post Covid round so far. Pastoral country club style expansive woods style course with each hole it’s own challenge, including a 500+ yd par 5 which I two putted for par! Course in mid summer 4+ condition with meticulously groomed fairways, mercifully cut rough and fast/true greens. I played 18 twilight holes in just under three hours for $30 with a cart. I hope I haven’t ruined it for the regulars but I will be be back. Well worth the drive!
Meadowlark Golf Course
Played On 06/03/2020Long 9 hole
Fortunate to get an afternoon tee time. Easy 40 min drive from downtown. straightforward 9 hole forest preserve course. Plays like a championship course with two looong par fives. No bunkers or water hazards. Greens true and fast. Friendly staff with no attitude. Carts now allowed so easy two hour round. Pretty good for 25 bucks.
Starboard at Harborside International Golf Center
Played On 07/04/2018Links gem
Played as a single by myself on july 4th for all 18 at noon. Barely saw anybody! Grass driving range and short game warmup areas a plus. Carts gps enabled. Walking would be a chore....Expansive picturesque links layout with 2 18hole courses. Just off freeway, feels like out in the prairie. Played starboard course. wide, fair fairways. lots of acreage with plenty of real estate between fairways. Great course conditions. Greens soft, medium speed, healthy and green not baked. Fun but challenging layout requiring driver on all but par threes. Obviously a destination facility. Pro shop and restaurant top notch. Employees friendly and helpful without being overbearing. Has a weekday muni vibe. Not cheap. Got a reasonable rate on golf now, definitely worth the money and the 25 minute freeway drive from downtown Chicago. I will definitely be back. Brief midday thunderstorm reminded me of English courses I’ve played. Twilight would be spectacular.
Marquette Park Golf Course
Played On 07/03/2018Hard to complain...
Played as a walk-on after work. $25 with a cart. Over 3200 yards for nine holes. Pulled driver on 6 of them. Course in good shape, especially the greens. Lots of geese but greens recently cleared of goose poop so not a factor. Course not overly difficult but long enough from the tips to require 3 wood on second shots from two of them and hybrid from two more. Best feature is the quiet and the utter lack of waiting. Played two afternoons and have had the course essentially to myself. I am a supporter of the concept of public facilities and the advantage of maintaining and providing a low cost inclusive opportunity for those who wish to develop and nurture the love of this game. This hits the mark on both points.
Desert Dunes Golf Course
Played On 03/20/2017Links gem with sauce!
Had reservations about this course given the financial history, change of ownership and impending development into a residential community. Kept an open mind, vowed to add to my evolving knowlege of golf course architecture and played anyway. This is a beautiful, expansive links style layout sculpted artfully from the desert. Each hole designed thoughtfully and had its own individual challenge and character. No throwaway par threes or target golf nonsense. Not a house to to be seen for miles. Conditions were very good; the fairways were intensely green and the putting surface excellent. The rough was....well...rough. It is best not to hit your ball into the desert. The fairways, while harder than some were wide and more than fair. I am no marksman but I hit driver on all but the par threes. One word about the wind.... It freshened up in the afternoon and required some thought to club selection, targeting...and occasionally putting. We were incredibly fortunate to be playing with an expat Irish golf pro who conducted a masterclass in what he demonstrated to us was business as usual in the home of golf. We all learned something about playing outside. Big thumbs up.
Wow, we are so happy you enjoyed your round, Wllywnka! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
