Siler City Country Club
Played On 07/09/2021Really Good
We play Siler City maybe once a month in season and it is currently in the best condition I have ever seen it. Tees and fairways grass is nice and thick and well mowed. Greens are very good, understanding that during the summer heat they need to be left a bit higher to ensure healthy bentgrass, but they are not draggy slow, just a bit slow.
The people working here are friendly and helpful and we like to walk, the course is very walkable.
For the money, I can't think of a better deal anywhere in Central NC.
Quail Ridge Country Club
Played On 07/15/2015Much Improved
I've played Quail Ridge fairly often over the years just for the low price, decent greens and the course layout. I always overlooked the less than ideal fairway conditions because of that low price.
Now, however, the course is in better shape than I've seen it in years. Grass everywhere, and it's kept mowed nicely. No summer burn areas on the greens. Bunkers are worked on a regular basis.
Overall, it's the best deal around and you don't have to spend all day to get around it, the players there move pretty fast. I have walked 18 there many times in 3 hours.
Is it in Country club condition? No. But for what it is, it's pretty good these days.
I'd say come check it out and you'll change your opinion on Quail Ridge.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University

I know there is a course alert symbol for LP but you have no idea.
LP is in the process of removing all those "natural areas (with weeds), and replacing them with standard type bunkers. All of them...and there are a lot.
There were 2 holes closed completely. 2-3 more had construction on the bunkers going on and you played those holes among the workers. There were a total of 4 tees closed having been rebuilt and freshly resodded, so those holes all played extremely short. Also all the bunkers that have been reworked have new white sand that hasn't had time to settle, so they were extremely difficult to play out of. There was a constant buzz of tractors, work vehicles, etc going back and forth all during the round. It's good to see they are working to improve the course, but all this combined was not conducive to an enjoyable round of golf.
I would not recommend playing there to anyone until next year.
And no reduction in the fees to boot! hmmmmm
East at Grandover Resort
Played On 10/16/2013Always in great condition!
Signed up for West course and when we checked in ere told we would be behind a captains choice outing. I asked if we could switched over to the East and we were immediately accommodated! Pro shop was friendly and helpful.
The East is a very difficult course and many of the pins were set just a few feet above a tier, which most all the greens have. Still though, the course was immaculate, especially the greens. Who says you can't have great bentgrass greens in this area?.If you know what you're doing it looks like you can!
Course was not crowded and we played taking out time in under 3 1/2 hours.
I always look forward to going back to Grandover, I've never been disappointed there.
Country Club Of Johnston County
Played On 10/12/2013Nice hilly old style course without houses.
My first time at CC of JC...I was pleasantly surprised. I love these old courses that were built for golf and not for selling real estate. Tees and fairways had good thick bermuda grass and it was well mowed...as was the rough. The greens are bermuda and were kept a bit faster than most bermuda greens I've played recently....which is a plus for me. Course is hilly with quite a number of doglegs going both right and left. The par 5's were a bit short by today's standards, but were very tight with large overgrown trees narrowing the fairways. The par 3's made up for the short par 5's though.
I went as a single and was paired up with another single, no problem. I enjoyed the course very much and will go back soon.
The Challenge Golf Club
Played On 7/18/2013Nice hilly course, greens were good.
I like the course a lot.
That being said, 2 negatives are:
The rough is cut a bit too high causing slower play and undue difficulty. The course can stand on it's own with moderate rough that the average player could advance his ball out of a little better.
Also, Someone decided that it was more important to build a few houses rather than have a practice range, so they closed the range and built some houses in that area.
No hitting balls before the round (unless you count hitting off a mat and into a net)
Lochmere Golf Club
Played On 6/03/2013Good layout, but needs work and some tree trimming/removal.
New bermuda greens were very thin and bumpy. Looks like they waited too late last year to try to grow them in and they didn't fill in before dormancy. Cart paths are terrible in some places.
Some tees are pretty bare.
Fairways had good thick growth and the new sand in the bunkers was very good.
Little River Golf & Resort
Played On 6/02/2013Hilly course, fun layout.
Greens were in good shape......rough needed mowing in many areas. Some bunkers needed sand, others had some cheap red sand with rocks in it added. Cartpaths were very rough.
