The Calibogue & The Haig at Haig Point Club
Played On 12/08/2020Don't forget this place while visiting Hilton Head
I had been over here several times and it never disappoints. This day was quite chilly and the holes near the water were particularly freezing, but that didn't dampen any of the round one bit.
This place is magical. You take a 30-minute boat ride over and back. It's a simple and relaxing part of the day.
The golf course is unique and has a lot of character. The par 3s are incredibly difficult, especially for me and how I was hacking it around on this day.
There are several views over to the lighthouse at Harbour Town and the famous 18th hole. But Haig Point is every bit as magical and well worth the effort to get there.
Chechessee Creek Club
Played On 12/07/2020Well worth the effort of getting there
I didn't know what to expect. I had heard that this place was great, but wasn't sure what sort of an experience it would be. Turns out, it was just what some have told me.
This course is walking only, and you must take a caddie, so be prepared. But the caddies are great and extremely helpful, especially with reading the greens, which were fiery fast and had tons of movement.
I loved this place. Everything about it. Neat holes, cool looks, great variety with good company. Can't beat it.
East at Belfair Golf Club
Played On 12/06/2020Good, solid Lowcountry golf
I had played the West Course in the past, but never had a chance to get over to the East Course. I'm pleased that I did. This track is strong, and the par 3s in particular are terrific. The greens are another star of the show and have great character.
I think I still like the West Course better, but it's as close to a toss-up as you can get. You can't go wrong with either place and the clubhouse atmosphere for a post-round drink is fantastic. This place provides a great golf experience.
Palmetto Golf Club
Played On 11/08/2020Great vibes everywhere
Only about 30 minutes from Augusta National, this place is terrific in every way - mostly wide fairways and great green complexes.
I had tried to get here for the past decade while covering the Masters and finally was able to sneak over for a late afternoon round. I was glad that I did. The membership is great, the course is great and post-round drinks, looking out over the back porch topped it all off nicely.
Can't recommend this place enough. Get there if you can.
Frederica Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2020Such a great experience...
Had the honor of staying up there and playing on two consecutive days. This is a terrific facility from top to bottom. It's just fantastic.
First, the golf course. I'm not sure what else you would want from a place. It was tough, but fair. The routing is great and the overall variety of the holes are really cool. I particularly liked the back-nine as it was definitely more scenic. There was not a blade of grass that was out of place anywhere on the property. That's not hyperbole.
The teaching area and practice facility are second-to-none, especially the short-game area. A golf geek could sit there for hours and hours and hours and never get bored. It's a big reason why so many of the local tour pros practice here.
We had dinner in the pub after our round and that too was awesome. Great food, great atmosphere, overlooking the 18th green as the sun was setting. Capped off a perfect day.
Then we went to bed, woke up and did it all over again.
Timbergate Golf Club
Played On 08/15/2020A fun morning....
I have been to town from Florida every year for the past 18 years, but it's always been in the winter. With a visit in the summer I wanted to make sure to get out to Timbergate, a place I've passed numerous times.
For starters, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I really appreciated that. Then, once on the golf course, it was a lot of fun. I loved the variety of the holes and it's a neat layout.
What I really liked in particular was that it wasn't tricked up and forced to be more difficult than it needed to be. It was all right in front of you and extremely playable. The greens were pure, which is every golfer's dream.
In all, a great experience. Can't wait to go back.
Kampen at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex
Played On 08/14/2020One of the best college facilities in the country
It had been awhile since I made the trip up to Purdue, but when I arrived, I remembered why it is such a special place.
This is a first-class facility from top to bottom. It's an absolute beauty. The practice range is great and every single hole on the Kampen Course is a gem - although it is not an easy track, so come prepared to be heavily challenged.
It was in fantastic shape, the variety of the holes is great and the greens were pure, pure, pure.
When we were done we were lucky enough to get a tour of the Ackerman-Allen Course across the street. That place looks great too. Can't wait to get back and give that one a try.
Streamsong Resort - Black Course
Played On 07/25/2020Super interesting....
Took me awhile to get down there from Orlando, and I'm glad that I finally did.
The Black Course is visually interesting and may actually frustrate some people during the first trip around. We, thankfully, took a caddie, which made the angles and aiming points much, much better. Just trust him and hit it where he tells you.
The greens are enormous, even bigger than I thought they would be. And I knew they would be huge. I'd two-putt from 80 feet, then turn around and three-putt from 30 feet. But such is life. It's interesting and was a thrill to play something so extremely different than I normally do.
Good, fun afternoon.
Orange Tree Golf Club
Played On 07/13/2020Tight, tight, tight
If you can hit fairways here, you can hit them anywhere. It may be the tightest course I've ever played and certainly is the tightest course in Orlando. Without question. So be prepared.
But the variety is great, the greens were terrific and I loved the variety of the par 3s. My son and I played on a busy day and we thought the pace would be slow, but the members do not mess around. We moved around quickly and had a good day.
The last three holes are super difficult. So if you need a good score to close out a round, good luck. Water comes into play on all three of them.
Dubsdread Golf Course
Played On 06/14/2020A good time at the Dubs....
Have played here many times but never got around to giving it a rating. Just had the pleasure of caddying for my son last weekend in the U.S. Kids junior event.
The greens were in great shape. Maybe the best I've seen them in all my years playing there. It's not an overly long track, but it's tight in places and strategically placed water makes you have to hit it good in order to shoot a good number.
I like it. Like it as a player and liked it as a caddie.

Thank you so much for your review, Jay! We are happy to see you enjoyed our course. We value your feedback, and hope to see you back in the future.
Duran Golf Club - Championship Course
Played On 06/06/2020A nice surprise
I caddied for my son here in a U.S. Kids junior event. Loved it, thought it was a really neat track with a good variety of holes.
The greens are big and can be tricky in places, but they roll nicely.
I particularly like the variety of the par 3 holes and overall it's a really good golf experience with a nice, friendly staff. Highly recommend.
Royal St. Cloud Golf Links - Red/White Course
Played On 11/10/2019Pleasantly surprised
It's off the beaten path, and unless you live in the area it may take you awhile to get there, but it was a good afternoon. It was crazy crowded, there was a backup off the tee and the pace was not great for the first 4 or 5 holes but then it picked up.
The course was in great shape and the greens were really good. I call places like this "forced links" because you can't have a links course in Florida and some of the spots feel like it was forced to make it feel like a links, but it's different for this part of the state and I appreciate the effort.
Eagle Creek Golf Club
Played On 09/21/2019One of the better public courses in Orlando
Have played here now 20 times and it's really one of the better public golf courses in the area.
The layout is really good (it's a par-73 with 3 par 5s on the back) and it always in really good shape. Have never had a bad experience on the greens here as they always roll nicely.
There are a couple holes that I don't love but, overall, it's a good experience and a good time.
Tuscawilla Golf Course
Played On 09/13/2019Nice, quiet, peaceful
This is a private facility so you'll have to join a member to play, but it's worth it. We played late on a Friday afternoon and there weren't many people around, making it a peaceful experience.
The course was in terrific shape (the rough was a little thick) and I can imagine it'll only get better during the winter when it doesn't rain so much. I loved the variety of the par 3s especially the sixth hole that has nice elevation and a neat look.
Practice areas are great too with a nice range, a good chipping green and a couple different practice greens that all have a great view of the plantation-style clubhouse.
Rio Pinar Golf
Played On 09/01/2019Like the layout, hate the price (place was under water)
I live in Florida, have my whole life. I know it rains, a ton, and I know course drainage can be an issue. But here, for the second time in about 3 weeks it's as bad as I've ever seen at any golf course. I like the layout, it's fine. It's suitable for my needs at certain times. But to go out at 7:30AM on a Sunday morning, pay $42 on a course where I nearly got my golf cart stuck in the middle of the fairway (three times)....it just seemed unnecessary. Yes, the middle of the fairway.
The greens were good, although still soaking for the first couple hours, and I want to give it another try but this time left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.
Ballyliffin Golf Club - Glashedy
Played On 07/15/2019A beautiful facility
Overall, this facility is just terrific. It's easy to see why it hosted the Irish Open. The clubhouse, the range, the setting....all are great.
We played the newer Glashedy course, which was the one they played for the Irish Open. It was well maintained and had some dramatic holes. Some of the par 4s got a little monotonous and felt like some of them played and looked similar to each other. (360 yards, bunkers left and right off the tee and bunkers left and right of the green.)
But the staff was tremendous and greeted us with a personalized bottle of Irish whiskey. You just can't beat that.
Would love to be able to get back sometime soon and play the Old course there, which I'm told is just a good - perhaps better - than the other.
County Sligo Golf Club
Played On 07/14/2019Was a great treat, especially on a long day
We had played 18 at Enniscrone earlier in the day so this was the second 18 and we were tired. It was a great walk and fairly easy on the legs, which was going to make us give it good marks regardless.
But the layout was neat and I loved how well maintained the grounds were. There were sharp, solid contours and the greens were terrific. The views were especially beautiful too and you could see how vast that part of the country was from many of the tee boxes. In fact, photos don't quite do some of the views justice.
A perfect way to cap a long, 36-hole day.
Enniscrone Golf Club - Dunes Course
Played On 07/14/2019The crown jewel of our trip
I had heard of Enniscrone and heard that it was great, but was not expecting it to be heads and shoulders above every other course on our trip.
Right out of the gate, the first hole is amazing - a dogleg right and up the hill with the green carved nicely out of a dune. It continues to get better from there. Mostly, everything is right in front of you, but I love the way that it flows within the dunes and doesn't feel forced. They layout was molded magnificently into the land.
It also helped that the people there were so accommodating and helpful. They were thrilled that we were there and rolled out the red carpet for us. It was also sweet that a nice female American member saw us on the tee sheet and made it a point to come greet us on the 18th green after our round.
A great, great golf experience.
Carne Golf Links
Played On 07/13/2019Worth the hike
Hadn't heard of Carne until a few months prior to this trip. It's a bit of a hike, but if you're up anywhere near that area you must find time to go play.
For starters, it's a difficult walk, especially from where I was hitting the ball that day. But the dunes are magnificent and make for some dramatic holes and shots along the way. The par 3s are particularly great and the holes out near the water are breathtaking.
Also helps that the staff was so incredibly kind and welcoming. They were legitimately pleased that we were there to visit.
Dromoland Castle
Played On 07/13/2019I mean, it's at an Irish castle
Full disclosure, we stayed at the castle but were not able to play the golf course. We did, however, tour the entire facility and see every single hole. The amazing staff was kind enough to take us around on carts and give us a great feel for what the experience would be like. I regret that we weren't able to play.
The thing with Dromoland is that it's close to Shannon airport. That's what makes it special. I know people want to play links courses in Ireland, I do too, but if you have time after you arrive or before you depart, don't overlook Dromoland as a convenient option. You won't be disappointed.
It's a difficult course, but beautiful with terrific people. A big thumbs up.
I’m curious, what could have made your experience a 5?
Thank you for reviewing your experience at our Club, Jay. We're glad you and your son enjoyed a great round at Orange Tree!
